That Bright ‘Star’, To The West, Over New Hampshire, Is Jupiter.

I take the dogs out for their evening constitution around 6:20pm. We see this sight to the West. Wanted to share with you. Just in case you were wondering. It is too bright to be a star. More to the East, and less bright (because it is smaller) you will have Saturn. OK? Enjoy.

Saturn is the smaller and closest to Moon (at left). Jupiter is further out.

It will be visible till well past midnight and will be hard to miss.

The conjunction will be around for a few days, before it starts to drift apart.

Titan, Saturn’s Largest Moon, Was Discovered This Day 362-Years Ago; March 25, 1655.

Titan is the HUGE yellowish orb — too big to be fitted, per scale, in this diagram.

Titan is marked with the ‘T’.

So neat. Discovered ahead of Uranus — the first planet discovered with a telescope.

That Titan is the second largest Moon in the Solar System (to date) helped, Jupiter’s ‘Ganymede’, discovered 45 years earlier being the largest.

Around 6:20 pm, should be best. Venus and Saturn will drop below New Hampshire tree line by 7:40.

Pluto is too small/dim to see naked eye!

Venus, to the left, is the brightest and biggest. Saturn between Venus and Moon. As close to sunset the better — provided it is above the tree line. Venus will have set by 8pm!

As is often the case Venus, given that it is between us and the Sun, tends to be low on the horizon and sets below the horizon quite early. So the best time to see it is with 90 minutes of sunset, in the soutwestern quadrant of the sky. Also look for Saturn and the always orange Mars.

BUT, alas, we are UNLIKELY to see it. CLOUDS!

Plus, our other usual problem — trees. Yes, the tree line may get in the way unless you can get above that.

But, I fear that all day/evening tomorrow is going to overcast. Shame.

Orange ‘Star’ Over New Hampshire, June – July 2016, Is Actually Mars — Saturn & Jupiter In Conjunction.

Hard to miss the distinctly orange orb, that is Mars, if you go out around 9 – 10pm. Saturn, Mars & Jupiter are in a straight line (as they should be, this the so called ‘ecliptic‘). Jupiter could be below the tree line — especially as it gets later.
