I Got The World’s SMALLEST, Certified, Bottle Of Scotch Whisky To Cut Back On My Dipsomania.

by Anura Guruge

I found this at the ‘North Barnstead Congregational Church’ 2019 Fair yesterday. I had to get it.

Yes, it is already GONE. What did YOU expect?

Not sure it will help me with my dipsomania. I am sure I am far, far gone.

I should have found these bottles 40-years ago when I was descending into my fondness for Scotch and used to have whisky with my corn flakes.

Here is to YOU. CHEERS.

“Johnnie Walker” To Sell 250,000 Bottles Of “Jane Walker” Black Label Scotch In March 2018.

by Anura Guruge

This is NOT an early, premature April Fool’s prank. Honest.

This is kosher — but then again, from my very limited understanding, Scotch, by definition, is always kosher as long as you do not mix it with diary.

250,000 bottles, in March 2018, at $34 per bottle to coincide with “International Women’s Day 2018” on March 8th.

It is a bold attempt to attract more women to try the absolute joys of Scotch. I am all in favor — and why can’t I wipe that stupid smirk off my face when I write that. She I have known women, even ladies, who liked their single malts. Nothing wrong.

I do not drink much whiskey — or for that matter any liquor — anymore. Not that I have anything against liquor. Just that I slosh too much of red wine already. But, I do like my Scotch. I do drink Johnnie Walker — though given a choice I would opt for Irish or a Single Malt. I used to be very partial to “Southern Comfort“, but haven’t drunk any in decades. A tad too sweet for I.

Anywho … Just wanted to give you a heads up.

Do you know which Pope was fondly called “Johnnie Walker” by the Romans, NOT for his indulgence in the Scotch but for his habit of walking around Rome?

The French, like the Scots, celebrate the New Year and New Year’s Eve with gusto — with lots of champagne and kissing.

Before I started going up to Glasgow for Hogmanay — since they, at that time, had an acute shortage of the ‘dark men‘ very necessary for the merriment, I used to spend quite a few New Years in Paris.

The folks who had adopted me lived in central Paris for 17 years. So I always had free accommodation — quite luxuries at that. So that worked out.

So I have spent a few New Year’s Eves on the Champs-Élysées — which in those was well within my jogging range.

But we used to take the car. It had diplomatic plates which helped.

A New Year I remember well is me playing traffic cop on the Champs-Élysées.

Once the revelries had died down and folks started to go home, the Champs-Élysées was 6 lanes of hardly moving, bumper-to-bumper cars. We had parked on a access road that ran parallel. But, there was no way we could cut in. So I jumped out strode into the middle of the traffic and started stopping cars. It worked. I had fun. I even stayed on and directed traffic after our car pulled in. I knew I could catch up with it in that traffic. I was very fit in those days — given that I used to run 7 miles, six days a week.

To do it properly YOU have to have linked, crossed arms -- as shown in this YouTube video. Click to access. From Edinburgh Hogmanay -- where, obviously, they know how to do it properly.

Hogmanay (New Year’s Eve Scottish Style) … — Dec. 29, 2012.

As far as I can see (and usually I can see pretty far given my $3,000 bionic contact lens in my right-eye) Google has only ever done one (1) Robert/Robbie Burns doodle and that was for his birthday, January 25, in 2011.
Seems incongruous. Would appear that there had to be multiple chances to honor this great Scot, though, as the Scots will gladly and correctly point out, they don’t have a shortage of Great Men. My Scottish mentor was beyond proud of his heritage. Given we were in ‘telecom’ (as he would say), he would love to start all meetings and presentations with the question: ‘Where did the inventors of the phone, fax and television come from?‘ That said, I still think the greatest Scottish invention, not counting Scotch, Haggis and the Pipes, is Velcro — now a great NH company. I once flew to Albufeira, Portugal, for a gala ITT Sales Junket. There was about 30 of us from ITT on the plane (and it was the good job that that plane stayed afloat). The rest of the 60 or 70 passengers were tourists. So, Ian, that was his name, BIG Ian Williams, would waddle up and down the aisle (Ian, though a sportsman of great note and a lady’s man, par excellence, was huge) asking folks: ‘Can you think of ANYTHING that has been invented by a Portuguese?

I am so relieved that I managed to find (so far) at least one bona fide Supper, on the day, in NH
— though I am not that thrilled that it is at noon, which rather than being incongruous, borders on being blasphemous,
since the consumption of a wee dram or two (and maybe a few more)
is obligatory to honor the great man.

If you are aware of other Suppers, on the day
(those pushed back to a weekend don’t count),
in NH please let us know.

I thought there used to be one in Center Harbor, Moultonbotough
or was it North Conway?
