‘SSL Scanner’ At ‘SSLTools.com’, Nifty Way To Check That Your Website Is 100% Secure.

by Anura Guruge

I was told about this tool, i.e., SSL Scanner, by wordpress.com support.

Google Chrome was claiming that this blog (the one you are reading) was not 100% secure. That confused me since I use SSL certificates and am 100% legit. The support person said I had ONE insecure link on the blog! Holy Smokes. It was my link to the so called ‘Flag Counter‘ — i.e., the widget that showed the number of hits I get from various countries. I checked. Yes, ‘they’ were right. NOT a secure ‘https:’ link. Hence the warning. I removed the ‘Flag Counter’. It was an OLD version. The new version is FINE. I just haven’t god around to using it.

BINGO. Immediately Chrome started showing the full PADLOCK. Have a look at the top. This blog is 100% secure, 100% safe. There is THE PADLOCK.

So, I wanted to share this with you. Handy took. Works well and works FAST.

Now the ULTIMATE irony. The SSLtools Website is NOT secure. It is possible that they have to be like that in order that they can serve the largest audience. Just found it amusing.

Fidelity MyVoice: Voice Recognition Login For Phone Interactions.

by Anura Guruge

It, i.e., enrollment in MyVoice, was easy and automatic — so to speak.

I had called to check on a tax issue! Yes, it is October and time to start thinking year-end-taxes. Right?

Once I entered my ‘passcode’ I was told that MyVoice was an option and I should ask the Fidelity Rep. about it.

After we talked taxes, I said I wanted to enroll in MyVoice.

He laughed and said “done”! I asked whether I have to say a phrase … NO! All conversations with Fidelity are recorded, independent of MyVoice. So, they have PLENTY of my voice recordings.

I haven’t TRIED it yet.

But, I gather, that when I next call in, all I will need to enter is my userID. Then when I start talking, ideally to a live Rep., the system will check my voice.

Neat. Cool.

Not that I call Fidelity that often. But, I like it.

I Pull The Plug On My Once High-Flying “Popes and Papacy” Website/Blog.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and marvel. These the stats for February 10, 2013 to March 30, 2013 — viz. Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation and Pope Francis’ election. 168,000 hits during those 6-weeks. 14,702 hits on the day of the resignation. Those were the glory days.

I gave up and pulled the trigger way earlier than I had planned.

I had been trying to migrate all of the important content, for posterity, to this blog. But, tonight, I gave up. I just don’t have the time. So much to do and this was just another distraction.

Yes, I do realize that I just destroyed quite a bit of valuable, cannot be found anywhere else data! C’est la vie. I guess if we get desperate some bits of it might still be available on the Internet archive. But, as of now it is ALREADY gone.

Finally End-Gaming My Once Highly Popular “Popes and Papacy” Website/Blog.

This during 2012 — 2013 was my PRIMARY blog — as opposed to this one. I put in a TON of work into it, working on it 4 – 6 hours a day. It had nearly 1,500 posts — and over 760,000 hits.

But it was really my “Next Pope (after Benedict XVI)” blog — to go with my “Next Pope 2011” book.

Once Francis was elected — and I did correctly identify him as a potential next pope — I kind of lost enthusiasm. My job was done. I wanted to move onto other greener pastures, e.g., orgasms, meditation and chronic pain. Plus, this blog was ‘taking off‘ — with around the same number of hits per day.

So, as I have done with so many other blogs I basically abandoned it. So for the last 4 years it has been ticking along because of the wealth of posts that were already in there.

But, keeping it going is becoming an issue — and cost is NOT one of them, though bloody GoDaddy charges me two arms and two legs for it. A lot has to do with security and I just am not willing to expend the efforts needed to button down all the hatches that I am supposed to.

So I am in the process of closing it down.

Hence the flood of ‘papal’ posts you have seen in the last week. {Smile}

I am transitioning over all the valuable, in many instances unique posts. I have also already deleted nearly 200 posts. Hopefully I will be done by October 2017.

So, now you know what all the new papal posts are about.

Enjoy.

IRS ‘Free File Fillable Forms’: Two Changes To 2016 e-File Process.

by Anura Guruge

Continues to work, and work very well.

Just filed, yes, e-Filed, my 2016 IRS Tax return using “Free File Fillable Forms“, on Friday — this my 7th year using them.

No real problems other than me screwing up two things that e-File pre-processing picked up.

But, noticed two (2) BIG changes in the e-File process.

I guess this is to enhance filing security after the fraudulent e-File claim scandals of the last couple of years.

So, here are the two changes:

1/ You have to include Driver’s License information.

2/ There is CAPTCHA human verification before you are allowed to enter e-Filing.

The first, i.e., requiring further identification, in this instance Driver’s License (or State-issued ID) data makes sense though it was a pain to go get our licenses. Having to enter the issued date really does make the difference. You couldn’t fudge that.

But, I am confused by the CAPTCHA. That is only to ensure human participation. I didn’t realize that there had been a problem of automated, robotic filings. Wow.

Somebody Broke Into The New Hampshire ‘State House’ In Concord?

Ahhh?

This UPSETS me, greatly, at multiple levels.

I am VERY FOND of OUR wonderful, HISTORIC State House. As a ‘Granite State Ambassador‘ (GSA) I have volunteered at the State House — and if the truth be told, I did have a hand in getting GSA volunteering there.

It is one of the FRIENDLIEST, most open Government facilities I have ever visited (and yes, I have visited the Pentagon to do a presentation for an Army General).

I also know, starting with our AMAZING Governor, Maggie Hassan, quite a few people who work, visit and volunteer there. I know that my friends in the “Visitor Center” will feel this violation at a very personal level.

Ironic that just last month they were talking about increasing security at the State House. See below. Two years ago, as a GSA, I attended a 2-hour discussion on this very same issue — though we never even touched upon break ins at night.

That they did NOT have any infrared security detectors is inexcusable!

When I saw this on TV this morning my second thought, after thinking of how this will upset the folks who work there, was to think of all the irreplaceable, historic items we have at the State House. We even have some moon rock. That some objects were damaged upsets me, GREATLY.

This is NOT good. I am not happy.

Just recently software security company, Arxan Technologies, released a report that took a look at the current ‘State of Piracy’ across the software, digital media, and gaming industries. Below you will find an infographic that sums up the report’s key findings. These numbers are pretty staggering, for example, the total dollar amount of unmonetized pirated assets reaching $836 billion in 2014. Also, only 50% of organizations have a budget in place to protect mobile applications. For more information, you can find the report here, on Arxan’s website.

This is supposed to be a MAXIMUM SECURITY prison?

Come on. It sounds like it was an out-of-control Butlins Holiday Camp. What is this? A joke.

Those prisoners were having more sex with prison guards than MOST Wall Street brokers living in NY?

WTF?

I have NOT heard anything about the Warden.

Shouldn’t he already be arrested and thrown in jail for gross dereliction of duty?

This is NOT funny.

Temporarily storing some of your luggage while you sightsee in New York City can be a bigger problem than you would typically expect. It all has to do with heightened security. Luggage lockers in New York City are basically a thing of the past.

Yes, of course, if you have a hotel reservation it is not a problem. You can check in the luggage at the hotel — even if it means going out of the way to first get to the hotel.

Penn_Station_concourse

Main floor on Penn Station.

Well we had a different problem when we went to NYC, on our way to Philadelphia in May, to pick up the Jaguar XJ8 from “Car Cheer“. Thanks to the antics of Brandon ‘bloody’ Bostian we could go all the way to Philly by Amtrak. We could only get as far as NYC — and then take a Greyhound. Well the kids wanted to do a bit of exploring in NYC, since it was 4 years since we were last there, so I got the Greyhound tickets to give us 6 hours in NYC. We didn’t have much luggage BUT we did have one big bag for the three of us. I did not fancy lugging that around New York, in the hot humidity of a May day. Deanna was sure that there were lockers. I knew better.

Trying to get or find a definite answer as to whether Amtrak provided a baggage check at Penn Station was HARD. It appears that it is security again. People just don’t want to talk about it. YES, I found one commercial service, outside of Penn and not that far from the Port Authority (from which Greyhound departs) which did what I wanted for $10+ an item. Bit its biggest drawback was that it really was neither HERE-or-THERE; i.e., it wasn’t at Penn or at the Port Authority. I persevered. I was sure that Amtrak MUST offer some kind of baggage check. Then I was told that it was ONLY for outbound passengers — and I did NOT have a outbound ticket. I was coming as far as Penn with Amtrak and then doing the rest by road.

Well here is the good news. Amtrak has a very competent, affordable (I think $6.25 a piece) baggage check on the ‘Main Floor’ of Penn Station. You can use it both INBOUND and outbound. All you need is a valid Amtrak ticket for THAT day. They staple your baggage tickets to THAT ticket. That is there security measure. Worked great. I gather that it can get busy and they suggest you get there with 30 minutes to spare. On the Saturday afternoon we were there it was ’empty’. When we came to pick up our bags there was no line.

It really worked well. We had to ask a few people BEFORE we found it. But it is well SIGNED if you look for the signs.

The folks that worked there agreed that it was NYC best kept secret. That is why I am sharing it with YOU.

So if you are going to New York City by Amtrak do remember that they do have a GOOD baggage check facility.
