The End Of The Road For ‘Segway’ (As In ‘Dean Kamen’) — & Revolutionary People Transporter.

at “Clark’s Trading Post” in 2016.

Wow. I still remember, vividly, all the intrigue & hype that surrounded its announcement. It was supposed to revolutionize HISTORY! Human civilization.

Furthermore, it was all New Hampshire — & our local hero & billionaire ‘Dean Kamen‘.

Oh dear. I have only ridden on them twice — both at “Clark’s“. I liked it. I had toyed with getting one. I guess I still can. I checked eBay. They have them. SMILE.

I am in shock. I knew they were not the success that Dean had hoped they would be. But, to kill production totally. I am sure a Chinese company will buy the rights. SMILE.

RIP … Segway.

I have been a huge and unequivocal fan of “Clark’s Trading Post“, Lincoln (i.e., ‘Loon‘), N.H. from the very first time I visited 15 or 16 years ago. I like everything about Clark’s. The bear shows are heartwarming in that the Clarks treat the bears like we treat our dogs. They, as they do like to point out, are their family pets. And you can tell. The bears are so at home with the two (Murray and Maureen (these days)) Clarks. So while I cringe and close my eyes when “Ringling Brothers” insist on putting on Big Cat acts I have no qualms, whatsoever, about the bear acts. You can tell that the bears are pampered and loved and doing the show is part of their lives. So no issues with the bear show. On Tuesday, July 12th, when Teischan and I visited, we (as is not unusual), watched both bear shows.

The train ride is always fun. Yes, I know the routine and the spiel by heart (and knew the now retired Wolfman). But it is still fun and it is nice to see the reaction of kids.

The new 300′ feet Anaconda water ride (up a 40′ platform) is sure fast (20 to 40 seconds max., top to bottom) but does give you pause since part of it is in PITCH darkness. It was fun though I am not sure I will do it again.

I did the Segway ride the first year it was open. We did it twice each on Tuesday since the lines were short. Though short, i.e., 3 minutes, it is enjoyable.

The Chinese Acrobatic and Contortionist Troupe, though different to the Chinese father and daughters act from a few years ago, is compelling though we have seen lot along these lines.

The water blaster boats do get you soaked — which was good since it was broiling hot.

In my opinion what is there NOT to like about Clark’s? Yes, it is very compact BUT they pack a lot in. But this is true of all the New Hampshire attractions of this genre, Befitting the State’s smallness they also all tend to be small. That said I will maintain that Clark’s is my favorite amusement-related attraction in New Hampshire — ahead of Storyland, Santa’s Village & Polar Caves.

Tuesday’s visit, and Teischan and I were there from 10:45 am to 5:15pm, was a success. I got to talk with Murray Clark, in depth, twice — once about his dad’s 1908 Ford Model T which he was restored and the other time about his kids. That was a bonus. I used to always chat with his dad. He was neat. He was missed.

I always recommend Clark’s unstintingly. Wonderful place for kids.

NH’s Dean Kamen, The Inventor Of The Segway, Creates High-Tech Bulimia Aid For The Obese.

This is still early January, so this is NOT an April 1st joke.
This, alas, is real.

There is no question that Dean Kamen is very clever and a good person at heart. Yes, he has done much to encourage children to explore science and pursue invention. Knowing a bit about his career I also know that his early inventions, which were very successful and made him very rich, were all in the medical field — mainly to do with drug delivery into the body. He was working on a better wheel-chair when he stumbled upon the Segway idea. But, I think this device which enables people to overeat and then have the food sucked out is beyond the pale.

I struggle with my weight and have for most of my life. That said, I do have issues with those that are obese because they eat and drink too much and exercise little. This device, which is not meant as a medical device per se, just feeds into the gluttony. Yes, there will be those that love it. I can see them waddling into Chinese buffets with their bulimia machine in a little bag. It will be the end of Chinese buffets! They will go out of business. These folks, with this machine, could eat non-stop!

This is not funny. Dean you can do better than this.

Google it. Search on ‘Dean Kamen’. The best coverage, as ever, with the graphic pictures, will be found in the British tabloids, such as my all time favorite the Daily Mail. Here is the Daily Mail story.
