Las Vegas Shouldn’t Just Ban ‘Ornamental’ Grass, They Should Also Ban Non-Native Exotic Plants In Casinos.

I was amused to read about this proposed ban of ‘grass that is NOT walked upon‘. Great idea. Bravo. The initial article I read, in a U.K. tabloid, just said that Las Vegas wants to ban grass. I genuinely thought that they were talking about a different type of ‘grass’ & was confused since I had assumed that Las Vegas must be all in favor of that.

I used to go to Las Vegas, on business, 4 to 6 times a year in the 1990s — mainly to conduct stand-up seminars or to attend trade shows. I used to notice that I invariably had ‘cold symptoms’ when I was in Las Vegas. I initially blamed it on the ubiquitous air conditioning. It was not fun bit feeling 100% since most times I had to be on my feet, presenting with gusto, for 6 – 7 hours a day.

So, one day I looked it up. BINGO. High pollen counts in the casinos (which, of course, is where I would be) due to all the non-native EXOTIC plants. Bingo. That was the problem. This was prior to the days when I started taking a Zyrtec everyday (as I have for the last 8-years, or so).

It is crazy. Yes, it looks awfully pretty & impressive, BUT do we need all these plants?

I am glad that Las Vegas has started to think about this problem. Bravo. I like Las Vegas.

Advent & Christmas 2017 Greetings From “York Minster”, England — For You.

by Anura Guruge

“York Minster”, in York, Yorkshire, England, is one of my all time favorite cathedrals — and as some of you know, I am a cathedral & abbey buff.

It is called ‘Minster’, rather than ‘cathedral’, The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Saint Peter in York, because, wayback, it was the the main missionary church in the area.

I have visited it many, many times and spent many an enchanted hour inside. I used to do seminars in York, at a hotel walking distance from the Minister. In the evening, before dinner, I would go for Evensong, on my own, sit in the dark and listen. It was magical.

So, I wanted to share this with you for Christmas.

Merry Christmas.

This, IF anybody signs up for any of these classes (which is always a BIG ‘IF’), will be my 3rd round with them — I having started a year ago, Spring 2016.

Offering my “Web design” class (#7 in the program above) for the 3rd time. Not sure whether it will fly this time around. At least 19 people have attended the last two classes and that might be it for interest.

I split the “Brain Meditation” class I taught in October into two NEW classes: “Thinking: For The Sheer Fun Of It” (#1) and “Quick & Easy Meditation” (#3). Realized that folks want to learn about traditional meditation too. So that is what the new class will do: cover both conventional and brain meditation. The “Thinking” class, as the title states, is all about having FUN. I would LIKE that class to run BUT I am not holding my breath. Might be too cerebral. [Disclosure: I asked for it to be #1! What can I say.]

Publish Your Own Book For Free” (#13) is new. I have done it before, albeit at the Alton Library. Not sure IF anybody will sign up for it. C’est la vie.

Definitely NOT expecting all 4 classes to run. If they do, I will be teaching 4 nights, Monday – Thursday, the first week in April. ‘They’ were worried about that given my age. They, probably quite rightly, think that that might be too much for I.

I Am Teaching Two Classes, “Brain Meditation” & “Web Creation” In Wolfeboro, NH, Starting Next Week.

by Anura Guruge

Was informed today that both these classes are ‘ON’ — i.e., they have enough students to be viable. So I will be teaching these two, 4-week classes, starting next week.

IF you can, you should try to make the “Brain Meditation” class. I am not sure how many of these I will teach and I am looking for acolytes that can spread the word and teach THEIR OWN classes.

Details on how to enrol can be found here.

As some of you know I taught the “Website Creation & Design Class“, quite successfully, in Spring.

With that class I can say without any equivocation that is back by popular demand! I am, of course, happy about that.

First time, EVER, for me teaching ‘Brain Meditation‘ in any form or format. Looking forward to that. I better get the book published by October!

Not sure whether the astronomy course will take off. I was ASKED to offer it. So I did. If all 3 happen I am going to be a tad busy. SMILE.

They do not have it online (as yet). It will be in local papers this week.
[I will put it online shortly.]

In addition to my seminars — some of them up to 5 days long — I used to do a LOT of teaching. I taught 6 or 7 undergraduate and graduate courses at SNHU covering IT, Web design, Programming and Marketing! I also taught Web design at Laconia Adult Education.

Then I gave up basically to focus on my Pope books. Then around Christmas I saw Wolfeboro Adult Education advertising for somebody to teach Web design. So I e-mailed them. Once I told them my background they asked what else I could teach. That is how the astronomy class came about.

Whether I teach these classes or not will depend, of course, on enrollment. I do not know what the minimum is but I doubt whether they will run the classes unless they get at least 7 or 8 people signing up. I will keep you posted.

If you have ever wanted to learn Web creation design you should sign up. I will have you with a working Website by the end of the first class! I used to do that at Laconia and people would be stunned. And it is easier now than it was then.

“The Boy With A Note” CD by Ralph McTell. Click to access Amazon listing. A musical biography of Dylan Thomas.

YouTube video of Ralph McTell singing “Summer Girls”, from the CD — one of its many evocative, very easy on the ears, songs.

Dylan Thomas, the Welsh poet (who died young at 39), best known for Under Milk Wood, is due for a resurgence of fame, at least in New England, because Cambridge ‘Revels’ (the ‘mothership’ as I call them) is doing a “Welsh Celebration” as the theme of their Christmas (Solstice) show — whereas ‘Revels North‘, (Dartmouth as I call them) are doing a ‘”Scottish Bash“. So two very British, very celtic shows by the two NE ‘Revels’ powerhouses. The “Welsh Celebration“, as I immediately knew it would be even before I read the ‘blurb’, invokes Dylan Thomas — since he is BEST known in the States for A Child’s Christmas In Wales.

Well Dylan (as well known for his dipsomania as for his classic words) and I have a connection. I know that most of you don’t fully appreciate my Welshness and have no idea that my distinctive accent has very Welsh undertones. Well given this connection I wanted to do a few posts about Dylan ahead of the ‘Revels’.

This magical CD, by Ralph “Streets of London” McTell, was a good place to start. I have had a copy of it for 23 years and still listen to it! It is one of my favorite CDs, and if the truth be known I have two copies since I like to have one in the car.

Watch the above YouTube and you will understand. Ralph McTell is an amazingly gifted musician.

There is also a story as to HOW I ended up with that CD.

In 1992 I was in London doing a seminar. In those days, from 1986 to 1998, I used to go back to the U.K. 2 to 3 times (sometimes more) a year to do seminars. So this was anothre one of those trips. The seminar was at the Holiday Inn, in Swiss Cottage, London — one of my preferred venues for London seminars. As was always the case those days I had a rental car since I liked to drive around my ol’ stomping grounds in the evening. And that is what I was doing one evening, listening to the BBC on the car radio, when I started to hear these songs. I was captivated. Loved them. I wanted that music. But for the world of me the BBC never told me who it was and where the music came from. Aaahhh!

I lucked out. All the UK seminars were invariably done for the UK IBM Consultancy firm called Xephon. Xephon and I went back a long time. My primary contact at Xephon was Mark Lillycrop, a giant of a man in many ways, and not just because he was 6′ 7″ and as such qualified per the British definition for a ‘giant’. I explained my dilemma to Mark. I begged him to find out where the music came from and to get the music for me. Mark did! He contacted the BBC. Tracked down what the program had to have been. Mark is resourceful. Today, via Facebook, where he is a ‘friend’, I thanked him for this AGAIN. He smilingly pointed out that it was NOT easy in 1992 — when there was no Web or Amazon. He is, of course, right.

So that is the story of how I got the CD.

You don’t have to jump through those hoops. You can just order it from Amazon.

Trust me. Great CD. Tells you the whole story of Dylan Thomas, graphically, with music. Basically every other track is a genuine song with short narrations, by Ralph, in between. Listen to “Summer Girls”.

More on Dylan this week.

In the meantime try saying Cwmdonkin Drive. Yes, Cwmdonkin Drive, Uplands, Swansea.
