For Those That Have Never Seen Footage Of Winston Churchill Visiting Bombed London Sites During WW II.

by Anura Guruge

Yes, of course, this has to do with Trump trying to compare himself to Winston as to going walk-abouts.

NO COMPARISON.

Watch the 2nd video. That was a speech. Can YOU see Trump ever being able to compare?

I am glad to see that others have also pointed out the stupidty of this comparison.

Churchill Would NOT Appreciate Being Compared To Donald Trump!

by Anura Guruge

Click to access my post from 3-years ago.

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill KG OM CH TD PC DL FRS RA was a great human being & an exemplary, inspirational leader. Yes, he was, no doubt, a bit of a racist but that was par for his time. He lived in a different era — when there were Empires.

Trump trying to compare himself to Winston is beyond a joke. Trump cannot even match him on obesity.

Plus, Winston, QUITE RIGHTLY, distrusted men who did not drink!

Winston never needed police or army protection to walk the streets on London. People respected the man for his COMMITEMT & SERVICE to the country.

Poor Trump. Looks so pathetic when he thinks he can be GREAT like Winston.

This is frigging disturbing and creepy. What is wrong with these people.

This comes across as another Moonie cult. Some of these people. Talk about penile envy.

I just don’t know. I despair.

This on the same day that “Dick’s Sporting Goods” showed that you always have the option of doing the right thing.

Just wanted to make sure that YOU saw this in case, unlike I, you do NOT read the U.K. “Daily Mail” (online) a FEW times a day.

The First Tweet Was Sent On Twitter, This Day, July 15, 11-Years Ago — In 2006.

by Anura Guruge

Twitter was founded on March 21, 2006.

But it was not available as a service until July 15 of that year. So, folks within Twitter did send out Tweets as of March 21 BUT the service only went live for us, the public, 11 year ago, today.

Get E-Mail Notifications, From The USPS, Of The Mail That Is To Be Delivered To You That Day!

by Anura Guruge

This is June, so this is NOT an April Fool’s gag. Honest.

A real service from our USPS — yes, the ‘Post Office‘ — for free and for gratis.

It is called ‘Informed Delivery‘. Check it out.

They didn’t have to really do much to offer this service. They already scan all the mail as a part of their first-cut, automated sorting system. They use state-of-the-art OCR (optical character recognition) to pick-out the zip-code. So, extending that to read the rest of the address was not too difficult.

It could be a GREAT help. For a start you can see IF the check is indeed in the mail — way ahead of the mail being delivered.

I like it — THOUGH alas it is not available in my zip though it is SUPPOSED to be! As ever my loss and the price I pay for living in the stick.

But, check it out. Sign-up for it. It will be handy.

Bust Or No Bust, What Would Churchill Make Of Donald Trump?

by Anura Guruge

steve-benena3ad864a-ba41-514d-1740-6b5d3c9c5b10That Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill KG OM CH TD PC DL FRS RA is one of my GREATEST HEROES should not come as a surprise to any regular readers of this blog.

While I am glad that Donald Trump appears to share my admiration for this GREAT MAN, who was half-American (in that his mother was indeed an American), I, who know a fair bit about the demi-god, have some major doubts where he would have thought highly of Trump.

First and foremost Churchill would have HATED the “America First” remarks. Winston SUFFERED manly as a result of such sentiments in the 1030s when Europe was entering WWII and the U.S.A. wanted to remain neutral. Winston visited the U.S. to beg the Americans to change their attitude. That alone would be a huge sticking point between the two. Churchill was BIG on Allied partnerships.

Though Winston was known to be fond of women and greatly enjoy hetrosexual sex, it is well documented that he (despite his enormous power) was NEVER a sexual predator. He, true to his genuine aristocratic roots, was a good British Gentleman who treated women with respect (other than on a few humorous occasions when provoked by upper class ladies). He would not have tolerated Trump’s crudity. He would have found that vulgar.

Winston was also a GREAT scholar and a brilliant writer. He would have been appalled by Trump’s ignorance and lack of knowledge.

Winston also served in the military, in active duty, MULTIPLE times. He would not have been impressed with Trump’s 5 defferements.

And then there is Public Service. Winston served the British public in some capacity ALL his adult life! He would have found it hard to fathom that Trump, until becoming President, had not done any public service.

So, I think, my hero Winston will look down on Trump with disdain.

DirecTV — I Cancelled Account, 3 Weeks Ahead Of 2-Years, BUT I Paid For Last Month.

I hated DirecTV, with a vengeance, from the very first day I had it installed on June 21, 2013. Just check the above posts. It was a litany of never ending lies, scams and deception. I had to contact the BBB to help them sought out the initial order FRAUD and it was settled in my favor.

I vowed on these pages that I will get rid of DirecTV the very first day that I could — without giving them the satisfaction of charging me a cancellation penalty. I even set up this (— >>>) countdown clock.

Well DirecTV charges a month ahead, and given their unscrupulousness actually charges you one day AHEAD each month. So I had DirecTV installed on a 21st BUT they insist on charging my credit card on the 20th of each month. C’est la vie. The least of their many sins.

So on May 20, 2015, I paid for May 21 to June 20, 2015. That was the end of my contract. I called on May 21 to cancel. They said it was too early.

I called again on Friday, May 29, 2015. I called them twice and also talked with them on chat — and I have the transcript. Eventually they said that my account was closed.

It wasn’t. On Saturday, May 30, I still had service.

I called again. They said I was cancelled BUT they were keeping my service on …

So, that was 3 phone calls and one chat … and I still had service.

Around 3:30pm, Saturday, a very greasy sounding clown from DirecTV calls me up — on my cell — and starts with this “So, how can we rectify this mistake …” spiel. I blew my top. Though I give the impression of losing my temper and getting angry in reality I ONLY allow myself, AT MOST, 2 actual temper tantrums a year. [It has all to do with mind control.] But the two temper tantrums I permit myself, a year, are DOOZIES. I go to town. I go up one side of a person and down the other. As some of you know I do not swear. I don’t even use the ‘s’ word — which I detest. Yes, I frequently use damn, bloody and occasionally ‘bugger’ but we Brits do NOT consider those swear words — and “bugger” in Ceylon/Sri Lanka is a term of endearment. But I have a extremely potent vocabulary of swear words and can swear very effectively. I let that idiot from DirecTV have it with both barrels. I enjoyed it. Within seconds he was WHIMPERING: “OK. OK. I will cancel your account. You can stop now.” It was fun. The service is now disconnected.

I feel such a sense of relief. I really hated DirecTV and as with my temper I make sure that I do not hate many things — at any given time since that is a waste of time and energy. So as with the 2 tantrums a year I try to limit the things I hate at any given time to 2. That works. So for the last 2 years I have only hated two things: DirecTV and …. Now I am down to one. It gets better. I never really hated KIA, just disliked them, but in a couple of hours I am getting rid of our KIA Sportage too — 28 days ahead of its lease-end. But as with DirecTV I have paid up and can now return it. More on that once I actually

British pomp & pageantry, particularly when it involves the poignant red poppy, makes me so proud and resolute.

This was a BIG deal and I am glad that even 70 years later we are doing the right thing the right way.

Reflect, remember be proud.

As I have explained before we are not ‘big’ phone people. Yes, I use a phone but it is not my favorite means of communications. I prefer e-mail. We don’t use the phone much. We also only use the phone, the old fashioned way, to make calls. So we need a basic cell plan — just voice and a basic phone.

I have been with U. S. Cellular for a long, long time. Maybe since about 2000, maybe even before. To be fair they treat me well. I have been out of contract for years. But, their rates keep on going up and their customer service is hard to reach of late.

Deanna’s aunt who works for Walmart told me about ‘Straight Talk‘. That would have worked but I had a horrible experience with a dead phone.

I have been an AARP member for a decade. It is a good deal. The membership pays for itself just in hotel discounts each year. When I remember I insist on my FREE donut at Dunkin. I think it is funny that Dunkin gives U.S. seniors free donuts. That is probably the last thing they need. I never eat mine. I give it to the kids.

I had seen ‘Consumer Cellular‘ advertised with the umpteen publications we get with AARP for years. But, I kind of thought that it might be even too basic for us. I was WRONG.

I saw yet another ad. on TV the other day. Decided to check them out. Prices and terms & conditions seemed right. No contract. Family plan for just $10 extra.

But, it didn’t say, inexcusably, whether you could transfer your existing cell number — a must for us. I have had this number for over a decade. All my accounts have it.

I called the 1-888 number to check. Yes, they support number transfer — the so called number portability.

They were beyond helpful. Very pleasant. Spoke good English. No real pressure. AARP members have an iron-clad 45-day zero-risk guarantee. I went ahead and pulled the trigger on that very first call. Ordered two Motorola phones and signed up for a family plan with 500 minutes to begin with. Yes, some catches. No free calls whatsoever, even at midnight. No free incoming calls. But, I can increase minutes on the fly.

The phones arrived within 3 days. They charged within 4 hours. Called to activate the service and have the numbers transferred.

WOW. WOW! WOW!

Talk about simple. They transferred both numbers within minutes. The final two-way confirmation within the hour.

Service is provided by AT&T. Yes, initially when placing order we had to use the ZIP for Concord because their system said that Alton was not within the service area. Didn’t bother me or them. We knew that AT&T worked in Alton.

So, that is the story.

So far, so good. Very impressed. No problems. Deanna set up voice mail etc. on both phones. I am happy.

U.S. Cellular, Sheepishly, Admits In E-Mail To Billing System Errors & Issues! Amazing.

This is why it has been SO DIFFICULT, nearly impossible to contact U.S. Cellular for the last few weeks.

They are inundated with irate customers calling in about their bills. It has also crippled their Web site.

This is why I had so much trouble Wednesday evening and night trying to contact U.S. Cellular to cancel my service. On Thursday morning after an initial wait of 40 minutes and then a second wait of 10 minutes I finally succeeded in getting my account closed. Hurrah! I am so relieved and happy. Great weight off my shoulders. I was with them for over a decade and they did look after me quite well — my gripe was just with the expense.

I don’t know where I stand with my bill with them and don’t care. I had autopay with them until I cancelled that. Because THEY SCREWED UP they don’t seem to be billing me this month. That might work out. I will have to wait and see.

I will, of course, keep you posted. In the meantime IF you get a crazy bill from U.S. Cellular or have trouble contacting them you now know why.

That they could screw up a computerized billing system in 2013 tells you a lot about how inept they can be. We have had more than 50 years of SOLID experience with computerized billing systems. Today, a halfway competent team can develop a new billing system that will blend in with no hiccups. U.S. Cellular probably outsourced this to the cheapest bidder — most likely in Mongolia. U.S. Cellular management should be ashamed.
