Strap Options For The New Garmin Fenix 6, 6X etc. [August 28, 2019].

by Anura Guruge

I don’t wear the $250 strap daily. But, I do like a leather strap.

Plenty of options, THOUGH NOT cheap, from Garmin. Click image to access page.

So, as discussed yesterday, the BIG immediately noticeable features of the new Garmin Fenix 6 line is going to be the 1.4″ watch face (from the prior 1.2″ standard) and the leather strap.

While Garmin has ‘always’ offered leather straps they have not come as standard on running watches. With the Fenix 6 it will and for us runners that will be a change. I, however, already went through this when I got my Garmin MARQ Expedition. That also came with (gorgeous) leather strap — albeit, then priced, at $250. But, Garmin also included a black silicone strap as well. That was good. I am pretty sure that Garmin will do the same with the Fenix 6, i.e., include a free silicone strap along with the leather.

As with the Fenix 5 (Plus) we will have the ‘S’, standard & ‘X’ models. Though the display is 0.2″ bigger I hope they stick with the standard 20-mm, 22-mm and 26-mm QuickFit strap options. That would give us the most flexibility. If they opt for a bigger strap we will be screwed — at least initially.

Then there is the SHOULDER option, on the black silicone, that started with the MARQ. It fills in the gap and is very, very impressive.

Yes, you can get that black strap with the shoulder, just for 22mm, from Garmin — but it is $50 more than the standard version. Wow.

If the Fenix 6 comes with Garmin’s $80 leather strap you should be FINE. It is a very durable strap and you can immerse it in water multiple times a day — I DO. It ages and weathers like leather should. I got one of these BECAUSE I didn’t want to wear the expensive MARQ strap, with the white stitching, 24×7.

I also tried a couple of cheap leather straps. Was NOT happy. The leather was cheap and felt (and acted) like cardboard.

Leather straps with the metal clasp at the end are a DISASTER. They will SCRATCH your expensive watch.

So, those are the options. Lot of straps, especially 22mm, BUT they are EXPENSIVE. That is frustrating. Luckily I can get an automatic discount on them. That helps. SMILE. But, it is still not cheap.

Enjoy.

I Had No Idea That They Delivered Large Refrigerator/Freezers Using Just Shoulder Harnesses.

Click pictures to ENLARGE.

Attribution WILL be enforced.

This was the Samsung, from Best Buy, we had delivered — to replace a 13 month old GE. Click to ENLARGE. 289 pounds.

I can’t honestly remember the last time I saw a refrigerator being delivered. Can’t even remember the last time I bought one or have one that needed replacing. All the many houses I have bought over the years came with appliances.

Ditto for this current house which we bought 10 years and 1 month ago.

Yes, 10 years and 1 month ago — and last week the GE Fridge/Freezer decided that it was time for its planned obsolescence. I have since discovered that the lifespan of a ‘modern’ fridge is 8 – 10 years, whereas older ones would last 30 years or more. That would explain why I can’t remember ever buying a new fridge.

I wondered how they were going to take out the old GE (for a $15 fee) and bring in the new 289 pound Samsung.

I had visions of dollies and ramps such that those used by movers.

When I didn’t see a dolly I actually JOKED without ever realizing how close I would be by saying: “what are you going to do, throw it on your back and carry it in?” He replied: “yep, pretty much”.

And he wasn’t joking.

Never seen anything like this. Damn impressive.

But I am NOT sure whether it is safe, wise or advisable.

We also learned that they get no special training as such about avoiding back injury and other damage.

I also learned that they might do 6 such deliveries a day.

Wow.

Yes, definitely quicker and easier than using a dolly, BUT I can see the potential for disaster.

I am surprised that this is permitted. They are taking quite the risk.

I Am All In Favor Of Median Rumble Strips In New Hampshire Lakes If It Keeps Bikers From Riding The Middle.

by Anura Guruge

Centerline_Rumble_Strip

Three weeks ago they were scarce but suddenly they are everywhere — especially on Route 28 in and around Alton, New Hampshire. Centerline (i.e., median) in most places and both centerline and shoulders in other places.

I am glad — especially of the centerline rumble strips. I am so fed up of seeing bikers riding the centerline, often with their leg sticking further out, as if they own the damn road. It is dangerous for them and it is dangerous for us. The rumble strips should provide all of us with some separation. Let’s see. Bike week will be upon us soon. That will be the test.

Yes, the noise will be a distraction to those that live on the roads with rumble strips. Hopefully they will get used to it in time.

For the last 10 days or so, UNTIL Monday, August 3, 2015, Amazon, to my consternation, was claiming that they were SHIPPING units — albeit via resellers, ‘Beach Camera‘ one of them.

This bothered me because I knew that even Sony USA did NOT have any units to ship in the U.S. as yet. I am on a wait list at Sony.

On Friday I took Amazon to task for MISREPRESENTING availability and for POSTING BOGUS reviews. Yes, that was Friday. Monday morning they changed their tune!

Also this is KEY. Amazon is ONLY listing itself as the supplier. I am DELIGHTED. IF I was getting a Sony RX10 II, or for that matter any camera, from Amazon, I want one “shipped from and sold by Amazon”. I trust Amazon and I know they will take it back at the HINT of a problem.

I am also skeptical about the Sony RX10 II BUNDLES that are being offered. Tell me I am wrong, but I get a feeling that they OPEN the Sony box. I do not want a $1,300 camera in a box that has been open.

Interesting that ‘Beach Camera’ that is offering a Sony RX10 II bundle on Amazon is admitting, on its site, that they are only accepting pre-orders.

I will, of course, let you know as soon as the Sony RX10 II becomes available in the U.S. Promise.

The Sony RX10 Mk II, contrary to what you will see on Amazon, is NOT available in the U.S. as yet.

I spoke with a number of knowledgeable sources on this on Friday, July 31, 2015.

Sony Dealers may get their 1st shipment THIS week, i.e., w/o August 3, 2015.

What folks are doing is taking PRE-orders.

Most U.S. dealers will get 12 units in their 1st shipment.

I am on a wait-list at Sony U.S.

I do NOT need it right away. I have to finish a book first. So I can wait 2 to 3 weeks. Have a feeling that that might be best. First batch could have issues.

From what I can gather some units were available in the U.K. mid-July.

There are some good Sony RX10 II videos, from the U.K., on YouTube. I sourced 2 for you below. Check them out. Then at least you will be better prepared when YOUR Sony arrives.

rx10not
First and foremost: It is STILL NOT available.

This is from the Sony Store (U.S.A.) today — July 29, 2015.

Some online stores, including Amazon, are claiming they have some units.
I don’t believe them.

Beware: You might get shipped an RX10 rather than a RX10 II.

I think there are a lot of folks out there who are confused
as to the two models.

I am sure that some of the ‘reviews’ and comments I am
reading online that are supposed to be for the Mk. II
are based on the old RX10 Mk. 1.

OK, so far we looked at the understated zoom capability, which with digital assist is 33x (as opposed to 8.3x with optical alone), and that the built-in electronic viewfinder (EVF) is XGA OLED display standard with 2,359,296 dots (twice as much as other EVFs).

Some other points to consider and ponder:

1/ The Sony RX10 II (i.e., DSC-RX10M2) like the older RX10 comes with a BUILT-IN instruction guide that you can read on the 3″ LCD panel. That is pretty neat. That could come in handy. You don’t always have the instruction manual at hand and getting an Internet connection to try and read it online might be tricky. This amuses me.

2/ You can see it in the pictures above, especially if you enlarge them, the RX10 II (just like the RX10) does NOT come with DSLR type shoulder strap mounts. Instead it mas micro-loop attachments as with compact cameras. Some RX10s, from what I can see, came with v. neat strap attachment rings. I am going to need at least one of these because I have got so used to using a wrist strap. I will now be lost without one and you need a full strap attachment in order to use a proper wrist grip. I am hoping that they include two rings in the box. Just to be on the safe side I found some on Amazon for $3. Let me know if you need these too.

3/ With the RX10 people complain that the LCD randomly freezes for a few seconds at a time. Appears that this has to do with the automated ‘eye detection’ mode on the EVF. If anything, and it doesn’t have to be an eye per se, e.g., a finger, is in front of the EVF the camera thinks that it needs to go into EVF mode and disables the LCD — i.e., the freeze. If you run into this problem you can fix it, once and for all, by disabling the ‘eye detection’ function. Got that?

4/ A  common complaint with the RX10 is that the zoom is SUPER SLOW and that there is no manual zoom. I haven’t been able to get to the bottom of this. Give me time. I will track this down. Basically if the Mk II offers manual zoom we should be all set, BUT that could be difficult because that might damage the zooming gears.

5/ Autofocus on the Mk I is said to be sluggish. The new 1″ sensors in the Mk. 11 are said to be 5x times faster when it comes to data transfer. This should, in theory, speed up autofocus. Again I am digging into this.

More later. OK? Cheers.
