We have, in particular Teischan, been HUGE fans of ‘North Woods Law‘ for a number of years. All those shows were set, across the border, in Maine.

We had heard, for over a year, that there was to be a new series shot in New Hampshire.

Well it is HERE. Premiere this Sunday, on ‘Animal Planet‘, March 5, 2017.

It should be good. Of course the comparisons to Maine will be inevitable. Enjoy.

“Christmas at Luther”, 2016, Available Now, HD Streaming Online — For Free.

Christmas at Luther — Comfort & Joy” concert from “Luther College” gained International fame in 2012 when PBS broadcasted that year’s concert in the lead up to Christmas. The kids and I definitely were hooked on it. I had it on the DVR and we watched it multiple times.

You can still get the DVD from PBS.

As far as I can see there does not appear to be any plans to show that concert on PBS this year.

So, this online option appears to be our best bet.

Enjoy. Merry Christmas.

Alas, yet again, PBS will NOT be broadcasting the 2015 “Christmas at Luther” concert from Luther College.

The magical, hard-to-forget “Christmas at Luther” we enjoyed in 2012 was a one-off special. PBS did not record (and air) the 2013 or 2014 concerts. Ditto for 2015. Shame.

Some of the ‘local’ Public Radio stations, close to the College, will broadcast the music. See above.

You will be able to find it on the Web. So here is the Broadcast schedule.

Enjoy. Merry Christmas.

fast-n-loud-52Yes, I know it is a ‘Reality Show’ and as such that all that we see is NOT real. That said the BIG deal that Richard Rawling makes about ALL of his cash dealings, most of them in excess of $10K, makes me wonder … In the U.S. there are strict rules and regulations about individual transactions exceeding $10K. In some cases there are IRS forms, Form 8300, that need to be filled and submitted. It is possible that Richard does all of that or that all of the purported ‘cash’ deals are just for the camera. Yes, it is a ‘Reality Show’ but they do portray an alarming disregard for the LAW. Last night we saw an episode where Aaron just jumps into a car they bought — cash — and starts driving it back. No registration? No plates? Not right.

As a diligent taxpayer, I really would feel so much better if the IRS checked ‘Gas Monkey‘ to make sure that all those cash transactions have been properly reported. At a minimum lets make sure that ALL the cash transactions shown on TV were reported. That seems fair.

As I have bitched before I take umbrage to the way they play ‘fast N’ loose’ with financial matters on this ‘Reality Show’. The so called ‘profits‘ that they show at the end of each show are beyond misleading. They do not take into account salaries, equipment, rents, taxes or overhead! That is wrong.

But it would be worse still IF they didn’t play right by the IRS — not to mention the State of Texas. So I hope that somebody will take notice and check.

SMILE.

Review of the show
— that we attended (in the snow).

This was never in doubt in my mind.

I knew the show would go on and we were going to get there even if I had to leave 8 hours early.

Just had this e-mail from the ‘HOP’ confirming it.

The shows will happen; screw the snow. This is New Hampshire. We know how to deal with snow.

This will make YOUR week
and possibly weak at the knees!

I raved about ‘Christmas at Luther’ last year.

Indubitably the best Christmas music show on TV in 2012.

I had it on my DISH DVR as protected and watched bits of it daily.

The Luther College Norsemen were my favorites.

This guy … WOW.

I have a son who must be roughly his age.
I think of that.
I am very proud of my intellectually bestriding son.
This guys parents must be so, so proud of him.

Luther College, of course, is doing their annual Christmas shows.

What I can’t determine is whether PBS will show us the 2013 show or even repeat the 2012 performance.

Till then PLEASE enjoy this.

It is my early Christmas Present to YOU ALL.

Bought Tickets For ‘THE Circus’, Ringling Brothers, For October 2013 — As Usual.

Going to the October ‘Ringling Brothers/Barnum & Bailey‘ circus at the Verizon in Manchester, NH, has become a cherished annual event over the last five or six years — us also typically taking in the elephant parade before that got nixed by the circus last year. [More on that in a later post.]

The first time we went we had to redeem a FREE TICKET voucher that Deanna had got when Devanee was a baby. Barnum & Bailey give a free voucher to all babies provided the parents claim the voucher before the baby turns one.

When I went to Verizon box office to redeem the voucher and get 3 more tickets I discovered that the voucher only covered the ‘cheap’ seats. So I ended up getting 4 ‘cheap’, i.e., ~$20, seats. When we went to the performance we were pleasantly surprised. Given that the arena is quite small and the circus ‘floor’ occupies all of the ‘floor’ space, the cheap seats were GOOD.

Since then I have always gotten the cheap seats.

This year was no different. Though we get, through e-mail, all sorts of ‘buy tickets early’ promotions from the circus, I refrain since it involves dealing with Ticketmaster and I loathe Ticketmaster with a vengeance. So if we happen to be within 20 miles, i.e., Concord, we drive to the Box Office and buy the tickets at the window. As far as I recall the tickets for this year went on sale last week. But, I wasn’t too concerned. The show we go to is never full.

Yesterday morning, i.e., Monday, we were in Concord. We had to drop Devanee off at a 12-night camp. We then headed to the Verizon. It was very quiet.

I got exactly the tickets I wanted. 2nd row from the floor. So we can still be close enough to be perspired upon by the clowns. The four tickets averaged out to $22 each. Parking, thanks to Manchester’s Event Parking, is a $1. So it is not an expensive outing and is definitely worth the money.

I happened to be served by the Assistant Manager of the Box Office. I was telling him that I always come and buy my tickets at the window. He confirmed that that was always the best way — if you can make it to Manchester.

This is the seating configuration at the Verizon for the circus. The ‘stage’ and the ‘blue/gray’ in the middle are the ‘floor’ [i.e. ring] for the circus. There are cheap seats in the yellow sections and if you know the setup, as I do, and the Box Office person is willing to help you, you can get 2nd row seats, in the yellow segments for the kind of price I did. We once, for Cirque du Soleil, did the purple seats. They were too far. Not doing that again.

We have been going to this circus, at the Verizon Wireless Arena, Manchester, NH, for the last 4 years. We love it. They put on a good show (and we also go to other circuses too). Check my posts from last year, like this one.

I am glad that they are coming. Each year I worry that they might decide to give NH a miss on economic grounds. We, by tradition, go to the last show on Sunday night — because in prior years (before all the fuss about cruelty to elephants) you also got to see the elephants walking from the arena to the train. That was always a thrill. Last year, as I chronicled in my many posts, they took the elephants to the train while the show was still going on! I will do a separate post on the ‘elephant parade‘ 0r the lack thereof. Though the Saturday night show is the big hit, the Sunday night show has a lot of empty seats. That is why I worry whether they make enough money from their shows in Manchester. That said, they never send their ‘top’ tour up here. We get the ‘runner-up’ tour. C’est la vie. In this case it really is what you pay the piper.

That it is a dragon-oriented show is cute. Of late the shows have had more and more oriental influence. That we had ‘Dralion‘ by the Cirque at the Verizon just last year seems incongruous. Again, that is OK.

As I said before we go for the cheap seats, i.e., $17 – $22. The first time we went we had a free ticket and that was in the ‘cheap seat’ section. So we had to get three others to go with it. We discovered, to our delight, that the ‘cheap seats’ were not bad given that the arena is not that big. So that is what we do. Buying those seats definitely makes this circus affordable.

Yes, I will do more posts, especially about the elephants, in the coming months.

See you at the circus.

We have watched two episodes of Discovery Channel’s ‘North America’ so far. They were, indubitably, good. Definitely 4th generation of nature programs, 2nd gen. in terms of HD exploitation — if you start with David Attenborough incomparable and seminal Life On Earthon BBC in the 1970s as the first generation of this genre. See my ‘Africa’ post for more on ‘Life On Earth‘ if you are not familiar with this groundbreaking series.

I could be mistaken, but I do not think that this series, especially when it comes to storylines, narration, close-ups and ingenuity, is as good as ‘Africa’ which really was breathtakingly amazing. Maybe I got slightly spoilt by having watched all the episodes of ‘Africa’. We are still going to watch all of this series, it is too good to pass by.

Still a definite two-thumbs up. Kids should love it. Enjoy. I have already set the DVR to record this week’s episode (tonight, I think).

Giuseppe’s A Delightful Dining Experience … — Oct. 11, 2012.

by clicking on them.

The picture tells it all. The kids love Giuseppe’s. By far Devanee’s favorite eatery.

Julie at the piano setting the tempo for the belly dancers. This was very well done. Great act all around. Kudos.

Teischan lucked out. Julie asked her to pull the winning ticket for the raffled guitar. Michael Bourgeois, Julie’s husband, dapper as ever, is making the announcement.

We had a table reservation at 5. We stayed till 7:30, though we relinquished the table around 6:15 because people were lined up to come in.

It was good. The best, we think, ever — and we have been to quite a few of these. It was packed. Everybody was having fun. Bonhomie pervaded. You could cut it with a knife. That is what makes Giuseppe’s so special. It is always a fun place, the food is outstanding and the ambiance cannot be beaten. It is an veritable oasis of conviviality in NH.

I had asked Julie (Gnerre Bourgeois) whether they can have the Prime Rib entree special on the menu. It was. It was good. So I could stick to my diet though I did have 3 spinach rolls — the first pastry of any sort that I have touched in 2 months. [The story of how I met Julie in 1997 is at the bottom of this post.]

All in all a real great evening. Nicely rounded out Teischan’s birthday weekend. That Julie asked her to pick the winning raffle number was nice. can’t wait for next year.

More than likely Devanee will want to go there for her birthday, again, come October.

Only regret was we couldn’t, because Teischan had school on Monday, stay late to see Paul Warnick, Michael Bourgeois, Rick Page & Eric Gagne perform. Our loss. But, Paul was there and we got to say ‘Hi’ to him as we did with Michael.

I guess I look happy and sated, though I kept my carbs to a bare minimum and only had one (small) glass of their excellent Chianti.

As ever there was a nude at the bar, but I resisted the temptation to go and sit next to her. Steve Hodecker was around but I didn’t get a chance to talk to him.
