I Have $24 Leather Straps On Both My Garmin Fenix 6s And They Look Great.

I like leather straps on my Garmins. It really started when I got my Garmin MARQ Explorer with its gorgeous (initially) $250 strap. No question. That is the nicest leather strap I have seen for a Garmin. But, I did not want to spoil that strap wearing in 24×7, especially with a lot of sweat or swimming (though Garmin claims that this will improve it ‘patenia’). So, I experimented with some other cheaper leather straps — including Garmin’s much cheaper, standard leather strap.

They were ‘OK’ but felt ‘plasticy’, didn’t have any stitching and tended to show scratches. So, I continued looking on Amazon and eBay. A couple of months ago I came across these $23.99 TRUMiRR straps. I got the darker one. It looked great and it did not quickly show wear-and-tear like the previous one. So, I got the light one too. I now have them on my two Fenix 6s. I think they look great and they work amazingly well. I stopped wearing my Garmins when I shower so as to stop getting the straps wet. It will become interesting next Summer when I start swimming. Will I start wearing one of my many silicone straps. I have never had a nylon strap and really should try one.

But, I wanted to share these TRUMiRR straps with you. I know you will be happy with them. All the best. PAX.

Evaluating a ‘Polar Ignite’ against my ‘Garmin MARQ’ in July 2019. Click to access post.

I fully appreciate the dynamics and physics. I am NOT new to this and as you can see above I have been LUCKY enough to have(/evaluate) 12 decent (one could even say ‘high-end’) activity trackers over the last year, spanning Garmin, Fitbit, Polar and Amazfit. And I will say upfront: ‘in my opinion Garmin, especially with the likes of the Fenix 5 (Plus) is better at counting steps than a Fitbit’. But, that is kind of old news.

My wife wears a Garmin Vivosport. She has the same questions. How much of the step count is phantom?

It is inevitable. The accelerometer has to measure arm movements. It has no idea I am in the shower and standing still. It thinks I am walking. And then there was the 6-weeks when I was on crutches! Never counted my labored steps, and I was walking more than most — on the crutches — because my left hand wasn’t moving enough! Again, I understand. Just frustrating.

Why it always happens in the shower these days has to do with my latest ‘schedule’ of the last two-months. As I continue to recover from my knee surgery I have upped the mileage on my morning walk/run from ~3.5 miles to 4+ miles — always with GPS on. Given that a GPS mile equates to about 2,400 steps I am at about 9,700 — 9,800 steps when I get home. Then I get in the shower. Then I hit my GOAL. Bingo.

I did some EXTENSIVE step count record keeping with the Fitbit Inspire HR. With brushing teeth and showering I was clocking up around 400 steps in the bathroom. So, Garmin isn’t doing too bad.

Yes, I walk more than 10,000 steps MOST days. In the days I do, I am in excess of 14,000. So, the 10,000 is not my max. I also realize and tell people that what counts is the trend. Doing the same number of (or more) steps each day.

But, wanted to share this because it has got so rote — having the Garmin do its ‘GOAL’ celebration while I shower.

Oh, I average 41 floors count a day. I go past the 10 floor goal every day (as long as I am not on crutches). I usually hit that goal in the first 30-minutes of my walk/run because I live on the side of a ‘mountain’ and can’t go in any direction without doing some major elevation changes.

Another Custom ‘American Girl Doll’ Bed By Teischan (11).

by Anura Guruge

From discarded shelf unit she found at our local Swap Shop yesterday. She did the painting, decorations and made the mattress! She is now going to make some blankets. I suggested she also make some linen to put in the drawer units. Did all of this, including the sewing of the mattress, on her own. She has two (2) electric sewing machines of her own and also uses her mother’s fancy Japanese one. She is only one who does much sewing around the house these days.

A previous bed she made in July last year.

The ‘American Girl Doll‘ corner of her room
— mainly with things she has made.

Teischan likes doing crafts and is good at it. Next to her electronics, crafting is her next greatest pastime.

She particularly enjoys making elaborate stuff for her two ‘American Girl Dolls‘. Check out: bathroom/shower, furniture, fireplace, Christmas, Harry Potter books etc.. She has been doing this for two years.

Today, it was this bed. She only picked it up yesterday. It is quite heavy and I have helped her a few times carrying it around. The dolls have quite few beds now, including a bunk bed.

I am very happy that she does this stuff. She could make a career out of it.

‘Harry Potter’ Books For ‘American Girl Doll’ By Teischan (10).

by Anura Guruge

As posted here Teischan, who loves doing crafts, particularly enjoys making customized stuff for her two ‘American Girl Dolls‘. Check out: bathroom/shower, furniture, fireplace, Christmas). She has been doing this for two years.

She likes to make sure that her ‘Girl Dolls’ do the same things as she does. So one of the presents she wants for Christmas is an ‘American Girl Doll’ FLUTE — and, per scale, this tiny flute costs as much as real one!

Teischan has also caught the ‘Harry Potter‘ bug. She is on her fourth book.

Today she decided she was going to make ‘Harry Potter’ books for the dolls! You can see the covers. I suggested she make the insides from styrofoam. She is not sure. She wants to try and do it out of paper. Knowing her I would not be surprised if she cuts 400 tiny pages and then tries to bind them!

I will keep you posted.

I am SURE she has violated J.K. Rowling’s copyright, BUT as fellow British authors (though of VASTLY different statures) I am SURE she will not mind and maybe even be amused. Now, I am sure ‘American Girl Doll’ will cotton on and start selling books at $30 a copy. {SMILE}

Teischan’s (10) ‘Plains Indians’ Diorama For School.

by Anura Guruge

All her own work. Didn’t want any help with anything ONCE she found a piece of wood, for the base, that satisfied her. Took it to school this morning.

As I have said/shown before, Teischan is good at doing crafts. It is her second love in life, watching videos/TV her first. Actually what she really likes to do is work on crafts while watching videos on YouTube (on her pad). Some of her other craft projects: bathroom,  furniture, fireplace, Christmas

Handcrafted Bathroom, With Shower, For ‘American Girl Doll’ By Teischan (10).

by Anura Guruge

Doing crafts is Teischan’s second love in life, watching videos/TV her first. Actually what she really likes to do is work on crafts while watching videos on YouTube (on her pad).

She likes doing large pieces. Since last fall, as I have chronicled here in pictures (i.e., furniture, fireplace, Christmas), she has been building elaborate ‘sets’ for her two American Girl Dolls.

Yesterday, i.e., Sunday, she built this bathroom — all by herself. Check out the shower — with showerhead and controls.

I am encouraging her to go into business. Make ‘sets’ on order for other kids.

The Eta Aquariids meteor shower, like all such showers, is an annual event; this one taking place between late-April and early-May.

As with all meteor showers, the meteors associated with shower are detritus left in the wake of comets; periodic comets such as Halley’s that make routine visits obviously leaving behind more matter in their trail each time they make a pass. The Eta Aquariids meteor shower is caused by the Earth crossing through the debris field left behind by 1P/Halley, with its 75.3 year orbital period, over the centuries.

Actually there is another meteor shower associated with 1P/Halley — that being the typically prolific, Orionids in late October. Having two showers associated with a ‘frequent’ visitor like Halley is to be expected. If nothing else, as should be fairly clear with all the attention that Comet ISON is getting, comet’s that are heading past Earth to circumnavigate the Sun have an inbound and outbound path, that crossed the Earth’s orbital path. So there are are two debris trails — and in the case of ISON, if it survives perihelion, Earth will be crossing those two paths, two weeks apart in January 2014. In the case of Halley, due to regular perturbations by Jupiter, its orbital path also changes, albeit not majorly, from trip to trip. So it, over the centuries, has laid down ‘rubber’ in different parts of the sky. Contrary to what you might read in the media, this meteor shower is not the result of Halley’s last apparition in 1986. It is debris left behind over the centuries.

Meteor showers, confusingly, are named after the constellation from which they appear to originate — though the constellation has nothing to do with the shower. It just provides astronomers with a reference as to where to find the shower. The constellation in this instance is Aquarius. Eta Aquariids the nearest distinguishing star, one of the brightest in the constellation.

I doubt whether I will get up that early to see this shower. I have seen quite a few in my time.
