Compassionate 7-Eleven Owner Who Fed Thief, Is Probably More Than An Indian, He Is Likely A Sikh.

This was a GREAT story. It made my day. So good to see that we still have decent, compassionate, charitable folks like he.

Mr. Jay Singh, please take a bow. You have done all of us Asians proud. Good on YOU.

This is from the story:

“He said, ‘I’m hungry. I’m stealing it for myself and my younger brother.’ I said you need food? I’ll give you food. That’s not a problem,” Singh said.

Mr. Singh, modestly, attributed this compassion and charity to ‘Indian culture’. That is true.

But, I have a hunch that it goes beyond that.

I cannot, alas, be 100% sure, but I suspect that Mr. Jay Singh is a sikh — despite the lack of a hat on his head, or a bracelet on his arm.

Jay Singh can very well be a Sikh name.

All ‘Singhs’ are NOT Sikhs, BUT ALL Sikh men are ‘Singhs’. Get that. Having a last name Singh is the norm for a Sikh man.

So, why am I making a big deal that he might be a Sikh.

Sikhs have a deeply ingrained tradition when it comes to charity and giving — especially food to the needy.

I know quite a few Sikhs. Most are AMAZING folk. Generous to a fault.

That bracelet they are supposed to wear bears testament to that. They wear it to remind them that that is the hand with which they do good.

Sikhs, because some wear turbans and have beards, are often mistaken for Muslims. They are not Muslims.

Get to know a Sikh.

This just happens to be a great time to talk about Sikhs. They have a major holiday, ‘Vaisakhi‘, that always coincides with the Sinhala New Year, coming up this Sunday, April 14.

Happy Sinhala New Year 2017.

The 3rd New Year of the Year for I.
But you can never have too many.

Enjoy. Rejoice.

This year, now that I know, I am also including my Sikh friends in this

Obama Nominating An Indian To Replace Antonin Scalia In The Supreme Court Not A Good Idea This Election Year.

I don’t really have to spell this out, do I? Talk about backing up an oil tanker and pumping high-octane gas (petrol) onto the fires already engulfing this election year politics.

It was one thing to have a black president — though he is AS WHITE as he is black. Another to get one’s head around a 49-year old Indian who could grace the Supreme Court for 30 years.

It would be way too provocative. Inflammatory. Yes, I know that we have a Republican Indian (actually a Sikh married to an ‘American’) Governor, an ex-governor and that Microsoft is now headed by an Indian. But none of that is THE Supreme Court.

So Obama really needs to think this through very carefully and get counsel from Bill Clinton (who as an instinctive touch on these things, though he did get it wrong when it came to Obama).

So I am just putting it out here because as a man of color, I can. Think about it. Not a good idea. That is my only point.

Dental Flossing Could Be Going The Way Of The Dodo. Mouthwash Alone Might Be Adequate.

I had never flossed, let alone heard of it, until I was in the U.S. of A. and even then I think flossing only entered my life in the mid-1990s.

That is why I thought it was very funny that my young, 30ish, Sikh dentist wanted to know whether I had been flossing all my life. I came home and checked the history of flossing and on my next visit, 6 months, later put him right. He was very gracious.

I no longer floss per se. Instead I use plastic picks and go through quite few. My teeth and gums (for a man of my age) are ‘OK’, the only real problem being the staining due to my vast consumption of red wine, coffee and black tea. So other than bi-yearly cleanings dentist do not make any money from me — to their chagrin.

This take on flossing is interesting and will indubitably please many. I am, yet again, well covered. I have a ‘thing’ about using mouthwash. I gargle, vigorously, with mouthwash at least twice a day — with two different mouthwashes each time! That means I use mouthwash 4 times a day — the alternate mouthwash I use being diluted peroxide. I am a great believer in the magical properties of peroxide. I have, at any time, two large brown bottles under my sink. I use it for all sorts of things.

Anywho … This looked interesting and as such I wanted to share it with you.

From a Sri Lankan paper. Click image to access original — from 2011.

My early morning post about the leopard in India — and my claim that it could turn into a maneater got me thinking. As I did say, I kind of knew that leopards are not, naturally, aggressive towards humans.

And that appears to be the case. But, there are also cases of man-eating, which is a shame.

I LIKE all BIG cats but have a soft spot for leopards. Leopards are the ONLY BIG cats found in Sri Lanka. That seems incongruous when you realize that the Sri Lankan National Flag FEATURES a lion — rampant. WTF? Has to do with the origin of the majority race — the Sinhalese. (And yes, I am, as far as I know, Sinhalese.) The Sinhalese came to Ceylon (the old name) from what is now Afghanistan/Iran etc. ‘Sinha‘, as with the Sikh ‘Singh’, means LION. So we are a race name after the LION that live in a country that only has leopards. And that is why I always though ‘Tamil Tigers‘ was a really stupid name. We have no tigers — but that is par for the course for Tamils. They get easily confused. C’est la vie.

Just thought I will share this with you while it was on my mind. SMILE.
