‘Synesthesia’ — When One Sense Automatically & Always Also Invokes Another.

by Anura Guruge

I am pretty sure I had never heard of ‘synesthesia’ before coming across it in “Sam Kean’s” book “The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons” I started reading last week. I am big fan of “Sam Kean”.

I heard an excerpt from one of his books on NPR a few years ago, & knew at once that I needed to read that book. As is my won’t I bought all three of his then published books at the same time. Here they are:

I learnt a lot from his ‘The Disappearing Spoon‘ — which was the first one I chose to read. Until I read it in the book I had never heard of ‘Argyria‘ (i.e., permanently turning blue from ingesting too much silver) or how our brains need iodine in order to function satisfactorily.

So now I have learnt about ‘synesthesia‘, i.e., when one sense invokes another, e.g., seeing different colors when they hear noise. Franz Liszt (1811 — 1886), the Hungarian composer, had synesthesia. He was as such a synesthete. But, there are lots of other forms. Some might see colored shapes floating around them while having sex.

Wikipedia as a fairly decent article about it. Start there if you are interested — & you should be.

LSD, I also learnt, invokes temporary synesthesia! Didn’t, of course, know that either.

This is one heck of a book. I was going to say it was mind blowing, but that was, I realized, the wrong description. It is mind expanding. It is filled, chock-a-block with fascinating information and insights on every page. I learnt so much.

I already did two posts on subjects I learnt from this book: silver (and Argyria) & iodine.

I had never heard of him until this last March. Then, on a Sunday, on NPR, they read excerpts from his book “The Violinist’s Thumb“. I was hooked. I wanted to read the whole book. I went looking for it on Amazon and found all three of his books. As is my wont, when it comes to authors, I ordered all three.

I decided to start with the ‘Spoon‘ because I do have an affinity to elements.

Wow. I wish this book had been around 50-years ago when I was studying chemistry. I would have learnt so much more.

It should be a MUST READ for all high school kids doing chemistry. It will make chemistry that much more real.

Though well and amusingly written, it is NOT an easy book to read. It is technical and some of his very technical explanations are not as clearly explained by Sam. I ended up doing more research on my own.

If you like chemistry, do yourself a favor and read this book. It will enrich your life and expand your mind.

‘Argyria’, Turning Blue, Permanently, From Ingesting Too Much Silver!

I had never heard of it, or seen any pictures of blue people, until I read about ‘Argyria’ in the above book last night. Wow. And here is the craziest thing — this permanent blueness MIGHT not kill ya! Silver is a very powerful antibacterial. Hence, why some folks go overboard taking it.

This book by Sam Kean is pretty amazing. I actually bought 3 of his books; this being the first I am reading. It is all about the elements, the periodic table and atoms. Pretty technical stuff BUT I am loving it because I am learning something fascinating on every page. So much about the elements, especially the obscure ones, that I knew nothing about. This book is not ‘light’ Summer reading BUT if you want to learn about the elements it is excellent.

As for the spoon. Gallium. Ever heard of gallium? I had not. Remember I did chemistry nearly 40-years ago. In those days we didn’t go too deep into the periodic table.

Actually, have you ever wondered WHY it is called the periodic table rather than say ‘Table of Elements’?

Gallium

James Eckert, Alton (NH) Shooting Victim, Supposedly Practicing As Chiropractor With Lapsed NH License.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access my April 6, 2019 post.

Click to ENLARGE. From above post.

From the April 6, 2019 Post:

♦ Lizette started working for ‘Sanctuary Bodyworks and Sauna‘ in Pittsfield, NH, as a chiropractor.

♦ James ran a chiropractic business, from home, in Alton, called “The Big Idea“. [I can’t find any details about it or whether he was licensed to practice in New Hampshire.]

I got this e-mail this morning:

They had a NH license from 2012-2015 which expired and were treating people illegally, accepting only cash or silver, of all things……….I am a chiropractor and checked with the state for this info and am seeing some of his former patients.

Pretty self-explanatory. However, I am not 100% sure whether this applies to both of them, i.e., James and Lizette Eckert. Definitely James.

I had a hunch given what I was learning about their M.O.

Working from home …

So, another negative.

He is not what I would call a pillar of society.

My ‘Ananda College’ (Sri Lanka) Prefect’s Badge From 1966.

by Anura Guruge

Getting an e-mail from the “Prefects’ Guild of Ananda College“, which I had never heard of before, yesterday morning, about this event (below), prompted me to go rescue my old Prefect’s badge from 1966 (which is now 50 years old).

Anura Guruge Ananda College Prefect Badge

I think that this is from 1966. I don’t think it was from earlier. Though I only left in August 1967, I don’t think I got this in my last year.

I was an Ananda College Prefect twice (as far as I recall) — once in Lower School and then in Middle School. I am fairly sure I was “Head Boy” of Lower School. Have a vague idea that I might have been “Head Boy” in Middle School too — but that could be my mind playing tricks.

I do know that this badge was a RARITY! It was from a batch that was cast wrong.

The background should have been GOLD, maroon and gold our proud school colors.

Gray/silver was the WORST color possible. Maroon and silver the colors of our arch rival (at cricket) Nalanda College.

I remember that the staff were rather sheepish when they handed out these wrongly minted medals. But, it was the only I was given.

So …

C’est la vie. I just did a quick check on eBay. None for sale.

I just checked my Ananda College prize list (which I had posted online (and will duplicate below)). Appears that I won the “Best Prefect” Challenge Cup in 1965. So I was definitely a prefect in 1965. [I was also a House Prefect at Mill Hill, a post I resigned.]

Panasonic Lumix LX100: Fotasy Auto Lens Cap & Other Must Have Accessories.

by Anura Guruge

Taken with my Panasonic Lumix FZ1000.

lx100autolens

Click to access Amazon product page for this quite amazing Auto Lens Cap.

I had read about this Auto Lens Cap for the Panasonic Lumix LX100. It appealed to because I do not like to tether lens caps to the camera. I find that distracting. As such I am always looking for my lens cap with cameras. I tried an auto lens cap with my starr-crossed Sony A77  but that did NOT work because there was vignetting at full zoom. NO such problems with the Fotsay. It works brilliantly. As you can see from my pictures the lens opening is well ahead of the lens cover ‘petals’. Yes, it came with a matching silver UV filter. I did NOT use that (though I might reconsider that). I have been using B+W UV lenses and bought one of those. Couldn’t find a 43mm in silver. Hence the contrasting black.

One thing that I have noticed. The lens cap has made 3 drag marks on the B+W lens — highlighted by the black. No biggie. No damage is being done to the real optics.

Notice I do not use the neck strap. I am into wrist straps. On this (heavy) compact I use 2: Prost Leather Hand Grip Strap & a really cool (and it is ‘cool’ to the touch) and comfy leather DSLRKIT Split Leather Wrist/Hand Strap Grip. I slip the Split Leather strap over my wrist and then put my hand in the Prost Grip. Also notice the black connector on the other side. That clips onto a shoulder strap I might sometimes wear. Funnily enough I sometimes grip that connector, for added support. Works well.

As is my practice I also got 2 Wasabi batteries and a charger for this camera. That way I can always have a charger in my camera bag and one, permanently plugged in, at my rather busy and crowded ‘charging station’ (for multiple cameras, multiple Android pads and cell phones). I have had decent luck with Wasabi batteries. I have 4 all together across the two Panasonics.

Given all the cruel and unusual grief I suffered last year trying to sign up for 2014 coverage, and the amount of harassment I have endured this year with ‘the system’ incessantly demanding documents from me, I was dreading having to sign up for 2015 insurance. Not only is it the law (and I can’t afford to cough the penalty) my precarious health dictates that I have at least catastrophic coverage to keep the family from the ‘Poor House’ the next time I fall ill.

I had kind of worked out a strategy to hopefully minimize any system load related grief. I was going to sign up on the late afternoon of Wednesday, November 26, when everybody else would be busy trying to get where they were going for Thanksgiving. I had assumed that the day before Turkey would be a quiet day for healthcare.gov. I am sure the same will be true over the whole 4-day Thanksgiving period but I didn’t want to tackle it on a holiday or when Internet traffic would be at a peak on Black Friday.

2015healthcaregov1But as with all my plans I didn’t stick to it. Over the last 2 weeks as the very observant among you may have noticed I have switched my schedule around. I no longer pots or doing anything serious on this blog during the day. Instead I work on the book. That way I can devote some quality writing time to the book. Today, for a change, I made some good progress on the book. 30% done. I was ready to start a new section. It was just past 4 pm. Occurred to me that IF I try and get my Obamacare taken care of today, I will have tomorrow free to work on the book. So I gingerly logged onto healthcare.gov around 4:10 pm. Being who I am, I had made sure that my logon worked on November 15th itself — i.e., the very day the system opened for 2015 enrollment. Actually, being who I am, I checked it a few times! Remember I am the one that has contingency plans for contingency plans.

Logon worked fine. Quick. No problems. Like night and day compared to the nightmare of last year. The process wasn’t too bad. Yes, I did NOT have to enter much data. Just verify and confirm information from last year. But they do insist on a tedious Q&A process. But, it was OK. I was done within about 45 minutes.

My premium went up 12%. I could have got a lower premium with one of the new carriers but from what I could see their network really had no doctors. So wasn’t much use having insurance with them if they don’t have any ‘in-network’ doctors.

I am SURE there is a GLITCH with dental insurance. As was also the case last year, though dental is OPTIONAL, it doesn’t appear to let you SKIP dental! I was going to skip it this year. But after 2 attempts to say NO and move on I decided that it must be fate. I had to have the damn insurance. So I got it. It had gone up 16%.

Yes, being the PRO I am with this system I UPLOADED the documents I had to submit. Got all the GREEN submitted and completed boxes. BUT, of NO! I already created a fat envelope with copies of the documents. Going to send it certified mail tomorrow. Not doing the same dance as last year.

But now will begin the tango with Anthem and Delta. But at least I have stuff already in place with them.

I will, of course, keep you posted.

Happy Turkey.

chastitybeltWhen the media glibly talk about Ebola only being transmittable by bodily fluids they rarely if ever mention that these fluids include semen and as such most likely also vaginal secretion.

So if any of these poor folks were having sex, and the chances are pretty high that they were (given that the 2nd nurse, Amber Vinsonwas planning her wedding), there is a WHOLE new category of folks in risk.

I do not hear these folks being talked about. I can understand the media being squeamish to talk about sex partners in their news reports but what about the CDC.

Were they told to lay off sex?

Maybe the CDC, in addition to Hazmat suits, should also be dishing out chastity belts.

I think about such things. That is what I do.

Why Aren’t Heads Rolling At “Texas Health Presbyterian” in Dallas Over Obvious Ebola Mismanagement,

This is the Interim CEO of Texas Health Presbyterianin Dallas (TX), Jim Berg.

bergberg1a

Click to visit THEIR Website. Makes interesting reading.

First Question: WHY has he been INTERIM President and CEO for 7, yes, SEVEN, years?

That alone is suspicious. Is he not qualified.

Second Question: Why isn’t he already in police custody because I am sure this will eventually boil down to criminal negligence on the part of this accursed hospital.

I already said on October 9 that this hospital was screwed — it might as well declare bankruptcy now.

Well that was a week ago.

Things have turned much more ugly.

IF an innocent patient at this hospital contracts Ebola from a nurse, who was also providing care to Eric Duncan, all hell will break lose.

They have already, from what I heard over the weekend, stopped accepting ER patients.

As of TODAY they should stop accepting ANY patients.

Basically the hospital should be put on lockdown. No new patients.

This hospital should be closed — in time. I hope it does not end up as a SAD and frightening edificial memorial to Ebola in the U.S.?

This is crazy. Disgrace to the U.S.

Where the heck is Rick ‘am I awake’ Perry? Sleeping on the job or is it with a campaign worker?

Mark my word. This hospital has to go.

All of this because some idiot doctor MISDIAGNOSED Eric Duncan. He should be arrested. We should know who he is. People must know. Come on. Lets have the name. Most likely a U.K. tabloid will get it soon.

Jim Berg … do the decent thing. Resign and go to the nearest police station and give yourself up.

Let CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta run this hospital — albeit to the ground.

Well they have given ‘it’ a slightly new look ahead of the November 15, 2014 opening of the enrollment period for 2014.

I am NOT looking forward to that. I think it will still prove to be a nightmare.

In theory, as it says on the new homepage, I should be able to keep what I have since I got a plan, eventually, through healthcare.gov for 2014. But, I am skeptical. They will manage to screw it up.

First thing I want to know … who is the NEW chick?

Interesting change in ‘demographics’. One year ‘white’, next year … She looks like she might be related to Michelle Obama. Is that possible. Did they pay millions to an Obama relative to use their image on the Website?

Good news and I was AMAZED. My existing logon (as of May 2014 — when I had to change it AGAIN) worked! I couldn’t believe it.

But I still saw, given that I am quick … the same old ‘flashing screen’ that said “authenticating … wait …”. So the underlying logon process seems to still be the same. Yes, it is possible that the backend has been changed.

Can’t really do anything. You are locked out till November 15 — and I would not be surprised if they make us change passwords at that time.

No, I am not happy.

I know that it will not be a walk in the park. Yikes.
