‘The Brigadoons’ ‘Live @ Loon’ 2018 Music CD.

by Anura Guruge

My friend, Canadian music maestro Paddy Kelly of the famed “The Brigadoons” — my all time favorite Celtic group — sent me this CD in the mail today.

Wow. I was so excited and grateful.

I have, alas, only heard the “The Brigadoons” @ Loon — albeit 50 to 60 times over a 20-year period.

So ‘@ Loon’ is what I associate with “The Brigadoons”. I have heard them play multiple times at the “Governor’s Lodge“. I might have even been in the audience when this was recorded. Wow.

I just listened to a bit of it. Brilliant. Authentic sound. You can definitely get in the groove.

You will enjoy this.

I will forever think of this as THEIR ‘White CD’. The Beatles had a white album, this is their white CD — as meaningful.

Thank YOU, Paddy. You remain THE MAN. The MAESTRO.

This was indeed quite the movie. Extremely uplifting and inspiring. A GREAT MOVIE for toady. Shows you that there is still HOPE.

Saw it at the Concord (NH) ‘Regal 10‘. Had seen the trailer for it a few weeks back when we went to see ‘SING‘.

So glad that we went to see it.

Quite a few personal touches for I. Yes, there was a lot of IBM (including punched cards) that was from my era and which I could relate to THOUGH I think they portrayed IBM poorly and unfairly. IBM, in those days, even more than now, were ultra diligent about new system installations. There would have been site surveys on top of site surveys. No they would never be hampered by a door that was too small to permit the computer to be wheeled in. And then they had FORTRAN.

I knew two mathematicians who worked for NASA for the Apollo program — both were men, though one was black. He (the black one), who taught me physics in Paris 1968 – 1969, was the one that got me into computers! And they showed Yuri Gagarin — and I was very fortunate to have met him, in 1961, when he visited Ceylon. I was 7-years old.

Great movie. I wish all Americans could see it. It should be shown in schools.

I am so glad I got to see it. I will watch it again when it is available online.

‘Sing’ The Animated Musical Is Very Entertaining, Great Songs & Quite The Yarn.

by Anura Guruge

sing2

Click to access IMDb.com listing for “Sing”.

singWe saw “Sing”, at the ‘Regal 10, in Concord (New Hampshire), on Monday.

We had seen the trailers many times on TV and it looked like our type of show. And it was.

It was very good. I would watch it again and I only watch the very BEST of animated movies more than once.

The songs, and the soundtrack, even IF I leave dear Cat Stevens aside, was memorable. The sound was rich, clear and powerful.

Decent animation BUT not up to the recent exalted standards set by Pixar or Dreamworks. The resolution and texture of the furs and skins was what we used to see routinely 5 years ago. But, nonetheless still decent and very watchable.

Good family movie, sans caveats. Highly recommended.

‘Sing’ The Animated Musical Has A Snippet Of Cat Steven’s “The Wind” — MAGICAL.

It is by NO means one of the featured, full-length songs.

It is but a snippet, background music snuck in during a ‘Pool House’ scene.

BUT, it was electric. Gave me GOOSE BUMPS as soon as I heard the opening chords.

OH! Cat Stevens!

Cat Stevens. Cat Stevens. Cat Stevens.

What a WASTE. What a SHAME.

I grew up, in London, at the same time as Donovan and The Cat. I got to see Donovan (seated next to his beloved (actual) Aunt), but, alas, never The Cat.

But, I was a DEVOTEE.

Thought he was God. I always so venerated him for his talents and looks. I so wished I had 1 billionth of his looks — so that I might pull one or two chicks.

What a SHAME. Why? Why? Why?

The Wind” is from his 1971 album “Teaser and the Firecat“. I owned it as I did all of his albums up to the 1975 ‘Numbers’.

I wonder how many people watching “Sing” recognize the song. Know the name.

To me, this snippet, which was probably no more than 20-seconds was the HIGHLIGHT of what was a very good (and I plan to watch it again) movie.

Just wanted to share with you and give you a heads up.

The Paddy Kelly (Of ‘The Brigadoons’), Christmas CD (2016) — Blinking Brilliant!

by Anura Guruge

The CD that I ordered, from Paddy, arrived today, in the mail.

I knew it would be good, but Paddy Kelly (yet again) managed to exceed to all expectations.

It is not just good, it is BLINKING BRILLIANT.

It is really Master Class.

I have, consistently, referred to Paddy as a Maestro and this CD affirms my belief.

He has such a rich, powerful and melodious voice. I think it is a Baritone but I am not good on that stuff.

All I know is that this CD is extremely conducive to the ear.

Love it.

You really need to get it.

And a Video

Oh Come All Ye Faithful” is my all time favorite Christmas song.

I am, per my own admission, quite the connoisseur when it comes to “Oh Come All Ye Faithful“.

If it isn’t good, I can tell.

And, let me please assure you that Paddy’s rendition is World Class.

So, I tried, MY BEST, to try and share it with you. Some caveats. I don’t like shooting videos. I rarely shoot video and this is THE FIRST video I have shot with this camera. So, please excuse all the limitations. I know I don’t do Paddy justice and I probably have exploited his copyright (but I know he will be cool with that).

Listen, watch, ENJOY. It is MUCH BETTER in ‘person’. This video is poor. Sorry.

Paddy Kelly, as some of you will already know, is a key member of our favorite group “The Brigadoons“. That is how we got to know Paddy. He was the one very instrumental in getting Devanee to sing with the “The Brigadoons” at Loon, at the ‘Highland Games‘, last September. We are very grateful to Paddy for that and Devanee ‘whoops’ every time she hears me on the phone with Paddy.

You really should try and do it right. So much more satisfying.
The crossed, linked hands are symbolic — across your heart and the connection with others.
Cracks me up to see Americans struggling with this every New Year’s Eve. So practice beforehand.

Happy New Year.
