The ‘OnePlus Watch’ Released Today Gets Absolutely & Utterly Panned — Thrashed! Wow.

by Anura Guruge

Click here to read the DAMNING GIZMODO review
— & they are a respected outfit when it comes to gadgets.

Wow. I was NOT expecting that. As the reviewer herself notes, ‘OnePlus’ is noted for delivering very slick & comparatively affordable phones. So, this was a huge surprise.

I was curious about this watch. Though we have never owned a OnePlus phone I have read plenty of good reviews about them.

How can you get the step count off by more than 10,000. That is mind blowing.

As some of you know, I check the step counts on Garmins, Fitbits & OCCASIONALLY Polar & Amazfit. I expect to see some of them off by say 1%. This is damning. Didn’t they TEST. I am at a loss.

Why bother to release a watch if it has so many faults.

A whole team needs to be FIRED.

Well, that is that. I will not bother looking at this watch.

The Supposed Google Pixel Smartwatch Was A No Show Today — Subpoena To Be Issued Next Week.

by Anura Guruge

That was anticlimactic. Big Pixel 4 unveil and no Pixel smartwatch. Not to be deterred the diehards are now claiming that it is to be announced next week. Anything is possible, but this loos suspect. Today would have been the optimal time to make a big splash.

But, then again, you could argue that Google might not have wanted to watch to be overshadowed by the Pixel 4 and only get mentioned, in the media, in passing — the also ran.

Well, all we can do is wait and see. I guess they still have time. More than a month to Black Friday and Christmas is a month after that.

A Google Pixel Smartwatch Can Change Everything, But Doesn’t Make Sense — Better To Just Buy Fitbit.

by Anura Guruge

Yes, rumors of a bona fide Google Pixel smartwatch — obviously running ‘Wear OS‘ (i.e., Android for watches) — are again on the rise. This time though they might be close to the mark. Based on a patent that Google filed, there is also an expectation that this watch might sport a ‘hidden’ camera. Yes, you can get watches with cameras now, but Google, with its Pixel phones, have shown that they know how to implement a real ‘nice’ camera. A good camera, in a watch, can be a gamechanger and get a LOT of folks into a lot of hot water! Just think of what you could take pictures or film without folks having a clue what you are doing! Frightening.

Even a semi-decent Pixel watch from Google, without a camera, would be quite an event. Cause quite the stir. Heavy Android users that want primarily a smartwatch — as opposed to a activity/health tracker à la a Garmin Fenix — would have no choice to look at it. But, then you have the Samsung watches that a pretty good on both front — ‘smart’ & fitness.

It has been widely and credibly reported that Fitbit THE COMPANY is for sale and yes, Google has been mentioned as a prospective buyer. That would make sense, BUT Fitbit does not run Wear OS. And that is Google’s dilemma. Fitbit has the hardware, experience and most importantly a huge, loyal customer base. Google has the money. They could plough large sums of money into porting Wear OS to Fitbit. To I that would be what makes most sense.

But, from what I see we will not have to wait too long. IF there is to be a Pixel watch announcement, it will be within the next few weeks. Fingers crossed.

‘Zeblaze THOR 5’, Another Intriguing Chinese Smartwatch — With SIM, GPS & Camera — For $160!

Click to ENLARGE and study here. Amazing specs.

That is a LOT of watch for that price. You will also notice that the packaging, icons and even the User Manual look very Garmin. SMILE.

It runs Android. So, Android on your wrist.

Appears it is not waterproof. That is a liability. I am now so used to showering with a smartwatch on … never mind the swimming.

But, I wanted to bring this to your attention.

Worth checking out.

IBM’s Folding Smartphone Reminds Me, Vividly, Of IBM’s Ill-Fated OS/2 Operating System.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access the ‘Digital Trends’ original … Google for more.

Right now this IBM smartwatch with a foldable screen is ONLY a patent — and IBM (as you must know) files a lot of them.

Cute in concept, BUT will there be a demand for it and will it be practical. Making it even somewhat rugged and waterproof could be a challenge. Plus, why would someone want a foldable screen on their wrist when they are BOUND to be carrying around a smartphone (possibly with a folding screen). Just doesn’t look right …

It reminds me of IBM’s ill-fated OS/2 and I know most of you probably have never, ever heard of it. It was IBM’s attempt, mid-1990s, to come up with a BETTER PC operating system to displace Microsoft’s Windows. Well, we know how that went …

Samsung ‘Galaxy Active’ Smartwatch Gets A Far From Favorable Review At ‘Gizmodo’!

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access GIZMODO review.

Wow. Not good.

For many, including I, the ‘Health Tracking‘ is the primary rationale for getting a smartwatch like this.

As she says, the good news is that this is all software-related and Samsung will be able to fix it with new versions of the firmware.

Glad I did not rush off and get one as I had originally thought of doing.

I am now waiting to check out the Garmin MARQ Explorer.

Samsung ‘Galaxy Active’ Smartwatch Blood Pressure Capability NOT Ready For Prime Time Nor My Wrist.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. It will be a NEWER version of this APP.

Click to ENLARGE and read here. From: mybplab.com the Website for the APP.

I started doing some serious research into this Samsung Galaxy Active smartwatch ‘Blood Pressure‘ capability and soon discovered that it is far from satisfactory.

Basically it will be the same as that currently available with the Samsung S9(+) smartphones and this capability, on the phone, has not been a great hit.

There are 3 BIG negatives:

  1. You can’t (unlike say with heart rate) get a reading on the watch. A reading is ONLY available on the APP. So, it is a ‘connected’-feature. You need the phone, at hand, to see a reading.
  2. It CANNOT measure absolute values! It can only measure CHANGES from one reading to another. That is relatively useful BUT nowhere as good and relevant as getting an actual reading that says ‘117/70’. This is my biggest gripe.
Then they TRY to fake it. They want you to enter a baseline value taken with a proper cuff or what you last got when you saw your doctor. Then it uses that to correlate its first reading. That is GARBAGE. Blood pressure readings change from minute-to-minute. I know. I am somewhat of an expert on this matter.
So, taking the baseline as corresponding to the first reading it is taking is INVALID. The baseline & first reading could be +/- 20% out. Possibly even more.
So, the absolute readings the APP gives are meaningless. They could actually be DANGEROUS. They could be way too high or way too low.
  3. The APP is not from Samsung. It is from a 3rd party and the current version has not been great.

So, I am thinking of holding back on buying a Samsung Galaxy Active.

The BP feature is only going to be available as of March 15, 2019. I am going to see what the reviews are. OK?

I suggest you do the same.

A New Samsung Gear S4, Even Without ‘BPM’, Would Be V. Bad News For Garmin.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access original article in the U.K. “Express”. Google “Samsung Gear S4” for many, many more over the last 72-hours.

From the same “Express” article referenced above. Use the link — above.

YouTube video claiming to confirm that the S4 will have
“Blood Pressure Monitoring” (BPM).

The Samsung Gear S3 was a pretty impressive and compelling SMART watch — and I know since I had one till last week (when I sold it on Facebook).

It lacked all of the activity, sleep, performance and stress tracking features to make it into a genuine alternative to a medium- to high-end Garmin. But, it was a decent Smartwatch for those that wanted just the basic activity tracking functionality.

In the last few days there has been a lot of talk in the media about the forthcoming Samsung Gear S4 — which might possibly be called the Samsung Galaxy Watch.

It is supposed to have a lot more activity and sleep features. But, it is also said to go all out on health monitoring, and might include “Blood Pressure Monitoring” (BPM). That would be big.

Some are talking some real fancy features like displays on the rim of the case and on the strap. That might be overkill. But, BPM will be a game changer.

I will keep you post.
