I was watching the England vs New Zealand, ICC Champions Trophy 2017 match, live, on Willow, when I heard that both England openers, Jason Roy and Alex Hales, were using bat sensors — and they even managed to show a close-up of a sensor in-between overs.
I was intrigued BUT immediately knew what they were supposed to do. Basically another accelerometer-based sensor that would monitor bat speed, bat angle etc. And that is exactly what it does. Data is transmitted in real-time, via WiFi I guess, to the pavilion. If used by every batsmen they would provide a third means, behind Hot-Spot and Sniko/Ultra Edge to detect contact with a ball. Incredible. Cricket has come a long way from my days as a player and I am happy. All this technology makes it more competitive and exciting.
