My Two Daughters (14 & 20) Cleared The Snow From Today’s HUGE Storm Like The Experts They Are.

by Anura Guruge

The 14-year old, in pink, is handling the snowblower. This is our 2nd year with a snowblower. I taught her to use it last year. Though she pretends to complain she likes using it. Beats shoveling snow — THOUGH she is very good & FAST at shoveling. She is like a machine. Just gets going.

They both have had years of practice. Prior to last year we did it all by hand. Then I busted my knee when I slipped shoveling. THEY insisted that we get a snowblower. So, I got this monster, 3-stage. It sure worked well today.

Yes, I did fair amount of driving the snowblower. But very little shovelling for a change. I am not supposed to do much since I had cataract surgery just last week! SMILE.

Snowblowing Can Be Thirsty Work, Despite The Cold — Best To Keep The Refreshments Handy.

When I saw this I knew I had to take a picture.

Actually, truth be told, I don’t drink beer. Nobody who lives here does, i.e., drink beer. That in essence is why this picture came to be.

This is majorly expired — i.e., 2- to 3-year old — beer. Need to get rid of it. I sometimes use it to wash my hands.

So, why do I have expired beer. Just because we don’t drink beer does not mean I deprive those that visit us from drinking beer. So, I always try and keep beer around. But, it never gets drunk to the level that I maintain the cache. Then, I discover that I have all this OLD, expired beer.

Not sure whether you can get done for DWI, with a snowblower, on your own drive. I am sure that you would be liable if you ventured onto the public road. Well, I have nothing to worry. I don’t touch beer — in liquid form.

First Time Using My ‘Cub Cadet’, 3X (3-Stage), 26″ TRAC Snowblower — December 2, 2019.

by Anura Guruge

Very first time. I have NEVER used a snowblower before! So, this was all new to me. Plus, of the two REVERSE speeds only ‘R2’ was working. So, had to figure that out.

It was OK. It is a heavy beast. It does move snow and does so fast. I am sure I will like it more when I am more used to it.

I still went back and shoveled by hand! Smile.

Thought this will amuse

You Can Get Shear Pins For ‘Cub Cadet’ Snow Blowers, Even For 3-Stage, At Amazon With FREE Shipping.

Yes, you can buy them, of course, from ‘Cub Cadet‘, BUT they charge nearly $8 for shipping. That is crazy.

Luckily I found these, which is EXACTLY the right Part #, viz., 738-05273, on Amazon. Yes, I ordered them.

My 3-stage requires two different types of Shear Pins. Can’t find the other on Amazon. But, I am going to do my best not to get it from ‘Cub Cadet‘.

BEWARE. BEWARE of Cub Cadet.

‘Home Depot’ Publishes My Critical Review Of ‘Cub Cadet’, 3X 26″ TRAC Snow Blower; ‘Cub Cadet’ Refuses.

It is encouraging that at least ‘Home Depot’ acquiesced to publish my review.

Not impressed at all, at all, with ‘Cub Cadet’. They come across as a corrupt, cowboy outfit. I regret buying this snow blower from them. I was deceived by the reviews.

BEWARE. BEWARE of Cub Cadet.

Assembling ‘Cub Cadet’, 3X (3-Stage), 26″ TRAC Snow Blower — Owner’s Manual Useless, You Are On Your Own.

Nothing about connecting Shift Lever
to Shift Rod!

With no snow expected in the near future, I was going to do the assembly at my leisure, one step at a time.

So, the first step, per the instructions, was to assemble the Handles and the controls on them.

Well, I got it done, but NOT thanks to the to the dumb, garbage Cub Scout instructions.

Once I lifted the handle up and checked that all the cables are wiring were free (and not trapped) I noticed this heavy duty rod just flopping around. Didn’t look right. Knew it had to be attached to something. So, I got a light and started looking around. Noticed that the shift lever had nothing attached to it. So, I literally put two-and-two together. There were two hole options. Not sure which one I should have used.

The instructions also do not tell you which chute type you are contending with. You have to work that out.

And then there is this DIAGRAM (↓). Not impressed.

Snow Blower, Unassembled, Is In The Garage — Instruction Manual Is Confused (Prior To Even Becoming Confusing).

by Anura Guruge

It is in very good good company.

Well, it proved to be less daunting than we had feared — i.e., that of unloading it out of the Nissan Quest and getting it into the garage. It was a multistep operation. We first slid it off the Quest onto a bank in the yard and then moved it across the driveway into the garage. Having two strong daughters helped. Couldn’t have done it without them.

Still needs to be assembled.

That the Instruction Manual gets its languages mixed up, mid-stream, definitely does NOT help. This is from the English printed manual that came with the blower

So, I went online. Yes, the parts are in English BUT look at the TITLE.

And this is ‘Cub Cadet‘ — Premium Branding. I don’t think so!

I Have Finally Succumbed & Agreed To Get Snow Blower — But It Is Going To Be A Doozy!

by Anura Guruge

I have resisted 12-years of constant nagging … “get a snowblower” … “you are too old” … “you going to kill yourself” … “we are fed up” … “get a snowblower“.

I LIKE SHOVELING SNOW. It is great exercise. I like being out in the snow. If I am not shoveling I would be walking in the snow for 1-hour, and I would rather shovel since it is better exercise … and I am saving both energy (as in driving an engine) and money.

But, then I slipped and completely, totally tore my quadricep tendon while shoveling snow on Thursday, February 28, 2019. I needed major knee surgery and was on crutches for six (6) full weeks.

I had slipped and fallen, shoveling snow, nine or ten years ago, and broken a rib.

So, now it was total vindication. The dithering old goat — i.e., I — was going to slip again and kill himself shoveling snow.

To be honest, the knee injury affected my psyche. At 65 it was my first real injury! Yes, I had broken my hand, dislocated my thumb and broken most of my finger joints through rugby, skiing and cricket, but none of those had been major. I was not sidelined. I was not disabled. But, after the knee injury I was a cripple for 6-weeks and I hated it. I vowed to come back fitter than ever before — not that I wasn’t fit before. But, since my surgery I have lost 30 pounds and exercise 40% more. I try to average 6 miles of walking/running a day. I also try to get in 23-minutes of stationary bike riding to keep my knee flexible. So, I am in better shape to shovel snow than everbefore — and I have shoveled snow for at least 25-years.

But, slipping scares me. SMILE.

So, I succumbed. But, if I was going to get one, it had to be superlative. I was not going to mess around.

If I was NOT shoveling snow, I would have to walk my 4.5-miles in the morning. So, I would only have, at most, 30-minutes to clear the drive. So, I was not going to spend time and energy pushing, pulling and hauling a puny little machine. I was going to boss the snow around.

This was about as BRAWNY as I could find. Three-stage, with Track Drive and power steering. I think it can throw snow 200′!

Well I will, of course, keep you posted.

Home Depot was DESPERATE for the business. I knew how to finagle the best deal. 18-month 0% APR credit with $100 off up-front. SMILE. So, why not get a real good one?

Can You Tell Which One Of These Drives Is Hand Shoveled & Which Ones Belong To Snowblower Owners?

by Anura Guruge

Yes, I know it is a bit hard for the uninitiated. But, this was today, just after 11am.

Last night’s snow storm. Wasn’t too bad. 2-hour school delay.

So, have you worked out which is which?

These are adjacent drives, i.e., next door or across the road.

Well, I am sure some of you will work it out.
