Mercury Will Transit The Sun On November 11, 2019 — Remembrance Day, At That.

by Anura Guruge

YOU  will need Eclipse Glasses.

A ‘transit‘ in astronomy is when celestial body passes in front of another. In this case, it will be Mercury passing in front of the Sun — and we, in New England, will have front-row seats for it, and, moreover, it will be in the morning, around 10 am Eastern. The only thing that can spoil it for us is the weather. I will keep you posted.

Given that this is a solar transit, it is kind of like a solar eclipse — like the BIG one we had in August 2017. And as with a solar eclipse you MUST HAVE eclipse glasses IF you are going to look at the Sun. They are cheap enough. Better get some now. I still have mine from 2017.

That it is on Remembrance Day — my Poppy Day — makes it even more special. WOW.

Amazon Packaging Is Socially Irresponsible!

by Anura Guruge

A set of 4 TINY watch straps pins
that I received today!

EXACTLY as it arrived.

Nothing removed, nothing rearranged. Untouched.

There was NO packing. Nothing to break.

This was it.

The little packed had slipped under the bottom flaps!

The ITEM!

This is irresponsible.

I just could NOT believe it. I knew what was inside. I was expecting it.

This is BEYOND crazy.

A tiny package of unbreakable stuff. It should have gone in a padded envelope.

This makes me very upset and annoyed — especially as an Amazon shareholder.

UPDATE

I tweeted this post and copied Amazon. They responded.
They have a PACKAGING FEEDBACK process — here is the link.
I used it. Pretty neat.

Send them the pictures and feedback. Now YOU know.

Pictures Of Partial Solar Eclipse Over New Hampshire — August 21, 2017.

by Anura Guruge

I did NOT bother to get a special eclipse filter. I was not that motivated. I was going to leave that to the professionals.

Filter That I Used — Nature’s Own.

Reflection of the Sun in water I poured into a wheelbarrow.

I waited for the water to settle and then used an EV between -1 and -2.

Reflections of the Eclipse.

This was when the water was rippling.

It was cool. We only got to see a partial, but even that was memorable. First for the kids.

I did see the Solar Eclipse of May 10, 1994 over New Hampshire.

I had got 5 eclipse glasses from Amazon and that worked out.

Tomorrow’s Eclipse Over New Hampshire: At A Glance — Times & Coverage.

by Anura Guruge

New Hampshire Solar Eclipse Monday August 21 2017 start time max coverage Anura Guruge

It will start at 1:27pm and end at 3:57pm.

So a 2.5 hour show with maximum coverage, i.e., 62%, at 2:45pm.

So we might still be OK. A few clouds shouldn’t be a huge damper.

The LAST Solar Eclipse YOU Saw Over New England Was That Of May 10, 1994.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and read here. Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_eclipse_of_May_10,_1994

So, if tomorrow, Monday, August 21, 2017 you start wondering as to when you might have seen another Solar Eclipse, over NEW ENGLAND, it would have been on Tuesday, May 10, 1994.

I remember it. I watched it from New Ipswich, New Hampshire. It was NOT a total solar eclipse.

We in New England did NOT see the May 20, 2012 solar eclipse. So, if you hear folks going on about the 2012 eclipse don’t feel bad. It never reached New England.

Again remember what you will be watching is the MOON passing across the face of the Sun. Not some shadow. Got that?

New Hampshire Libraries Out Of Solar Eclipse Glasses For Monday — As Are Stores!

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and read here. From Manchester Library.

Click to access New Hampshire WMUR story …

You might still be in luck with some of the other libraries.

Be careful with what you find in local stores. They might not be ‘good‘ (i.e., strong/dark) enough.

Might be getting too late for ordering online. But, you could try.

All the best. The skies over New Hampshire should be CLEAR for Monday’s PARTIAL solar eclipse over New Hampshire.

Weather Still Looking GOOD For August 21, 2017, Solar Eclipse Over New Hampshire.

by Anura Guruge

Forecast from wunderground.com.

With just 3-days to go the weather forecast for Monday’s PARTIAL solar eclipse over New Hampshire looks GOOD. Clear skies.

This forecast, this close to the day, is unlikely to change much (we hope). I think the weather will cooperate. So, fingers crossed.

Have you got your Eclipse glasses as yet or are YOU all set with some type of protection. (I can make a joke about that, BUT I will refrain).

Amazon Still Profligate In Its Packaging.

by Anura Guruge

The 5 Solar Eclipse PAPER glasses I received
Thursday, August 17, 2017.

EXACTLY as they arrived.

Nothing removed, nothing rearranged. Untouched.

This is CRAZY.

This is irresponsible.

It was not fragile. There was nothing to break. These could have been easily shipped in a padded envelope.

Waste of resources. Yes, the air doesn’t weigh much BUT the box takes up space on planes, trucks and in the USPS vehicles. Plus the cardboard (which, to be fair, we recycle).

I have complained before about Amazon (as you can see below), and I do so as HUGE fan, a loyal customer and above all a very-happy shareholder (of AMZN).

UPS, cleverly, tried to get Amazon to be better by changing their pricing to include package DIMENSIONS as well as weight. Well, Amazon doesn’t use UPS that much, anymore! This was sent via USPS.
