It Grieves Me So To See Ian Botham Shamelessly Sporting A HUGE Gut. Oh, Ian!

by Anura Guruge

From this August 6, 2018 YouTube video — BELOW. Most recent example I could find. I have seen him, the last two days, on the England vs. India 2nd Test coverage from Lord’s. That is when I noticed it.

I have, of course, been watching the engrossing England v India 2018 series with increasing fascination. The Tests have been so amazingly gripping that I have been trying to watch as much ball-by-ball coverage and pre-/post-match commentary as possible in addition to my usual consumption of the 1-hour ‘highlights’. That is how I had come to see full, body shots of Ian. It is NOT a pretty sight. I only saw the above video (from August 6, 2018), which quite clearly shows his overspilling belly, when I went looking for a picture to illustrate my point.

Ian and I are British contemporaries, in reality he 3-years my junior. I saw a LOT of him, some in the flesh (in Somerset (with Viv), in Hampshire and at Lord’s), and tons on TV. I like Ian. What is there NOT to like. He is the cricketer’s cricketer.

That is why I am distressed.

Why Ian? Why?

He knows better. He has a daughter with Type 1 diabetes. We also now know that he suffers from impotence! That sounds like an oxymoron. How can OUR Ian Botham be impotent?

This is NOT right.

Yes, he is not the only famous ex-cricketer lugging around a hefty gut.

But, Ian.

Yes, he was ‘BEEFY’ all his adult life. But, never like this.

Yes, I need desperately to lose 20 – 30 pounds. But, luckily (and it just pure luck) my gut is not as big as his — as yet. So, I too suffer.

Please, Ian …

Ian Botham (‘The Legend’) Gives A HUGE Plug For ‘Linear Shockwave Therapy’ As A Viagra Alternative For ED.

Seeing this in the U.K. “Daily Mail” this morning (during my customary read of the paper while drinking my first cup of coffee) invoked multiple emotions.

I felt DREADFUL for ‘poor’ Ian (though ‘poor’ is somehow not a word that can really be associated with this very human legend). I like Ian. Always have. Saw quite a bit of him, in England, 1974 – 1989, especially since I used to go and watch Somerset play (albeit mainly to see Viv Richards). Ian, cut to the chase, like Princess Diana, is a good person. That he can tear up when a young South African scores his maiden century — against England to boot — shows his humanity. So this is rather sad.

That said, in Ian’s case, I am sure it is not working because he has WORN IT OUT. The “Daily Mail” talks about his infamous affair that came to light in 2001. And implies that that was IT! OK. Yep. SMILE. I also think that Ian, before he bothers with anymore of this ‘stuff’ should get himself a young crumpet — something that he will have no problem, whatsoever. That might do miracles for THE MAN — and he is indeed up there, worthy of that appalation.

‘Poor’ Ian.

I had NEVER heard of this ‘Linear Shockwave Therapy‘ — not that I have, as yet, had to go looking. ‘Vigore‘, ‘Renova‘ etc. in front that terms appears to refer to the MAKER of the electronics as opposed to the actual name of the therapy.

And from what I can see this, like Viagra, is JUST a blood flow increasing mechanism. That will help you get an erection — but that is it. And there is a huge difference. Just getting an erection (though always a great start) doesn’t guarantee that you will have an orgasm and hence be sated.

I have talked about THIS, at length, as item #61 in “Orgasms: 101 Facts & Trivia”.

Yes, I saw this, LIVE, on TV in 1976 —
Close and Edrich at Old Trafford against Holding, Andy Roberts and Daniels.
I remember it well.

NOTE: NO Helmets. These were REAL men.

YouTube video of Brian Close getting peppered by Michael Holding, at Old Trafford, in 1976.
I watched this, IN AWE, live, on TV. I still remember it.
Now this was REAL cricket. NO helmets. Real men!

Given our difference in age I only saw him towards the end of his career.

But, of course, he was a legend. A giant. I saw him during the 1976 West Indies Test Series. That was a turning point in my life. I was 23 years old and was working for IBM — at Hursley in Hampshire. I belonged to Hampshire Cricket Club (as a non-playing member, of course) and for the first time in my life getting the chance to see a lot of professional cricket. Gordon Greenidge and Andy Roberts both played for Hampshire and I knew them. So the 1976 Test Series was big. I followed it avidly. Yes, I went to Lord’s for the Saturday of the Test. That became my ‘thing’. Saturday of the Lord’s Test Match. That ’76 Series was epic. Changed my life. That is when I really became addicted to cricket. I still have so many books about that series INCLUDING the big Bob Frindall’s Score Book.

This (->) is how I will always remember Brian. That is what he looked liked (mainly) in the mid-1970s. I saw him at Somerset and in Hampshire. In those days I watched Somerset, in Somerset, whenever I could. I spent many weekends in Bristol and Somerset was ‘next door’. So Brian is no stranger to me.

84, even by his standards, wasn’t a bad knock. So I can’t complain.

I will miss him. What a guy. They don’t make them like that anymore. When I see batsman ducking into the ball, as did Eoin Morgan on Sunday, it makes me so mad. Helmets have been the bane of cricket. Batsman think they can handle the short stuff because they have the protection. They NEVER saw Brian and John Edrich. Now that was cricket.

Thank YOU, Brian. That, as you must know, was quite the INNINGS. You will always be ‘Not Out’ in MY book.
