“Tommy’s Honour” Movie (2016) On Amazon Prime — More Than Just Golf; Engaging Human Drama.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access IMDb.com listing for this movie.

YouTube trailer.

Watched it because it came up on our Amazon Prime Video list.

I was a tad worried that it would be very golf-centric — and golf has no appeal to I. I find it exceedingly boring and pointless. But, we were pleasantly surprised. The golf is in tasteful moderation and easy enough to watch. The rest is a rather engaging human drama about families: fathers, sons, lovers and wives. Very well put together. Makes you want to know what happens. Has you rooting for some. Plus it is shot in luscious Scotland. Not bad at all. I would recommend it.

If you like golf, that would be a huge bonus. Lot of history about the game and even how golf bags were invented. Wow.

Gordon Webster, Once The Queen’s Piper, Of Late Of Concord (NH), Passed Away On March 29, 2018.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. From my 1999 ‘NH Highland Games’ program. I got to know him around this time.

Crop of HIS Facebook picture.

The Facebook message.

I happened, by chance, to hear the sad news on WMUR (Channel 9) news this morning. It was quite a shock. I had no idea that he had been that sick — or for that long. Though we were at best but nodding acquaintances I would have gone and seen him. He was quite the man.

I first met him at the ‘NH Highland Games‘, in Loon, probably around 1999 (given that he emigrated to NH in 1998). I would invariably say ‘hello’ and a few words. A few years later he started playing — or bringing some of his students — to the LaconiaMulticultural Day‘, which I attended, assiduously. I would chat to him there. The Laconia event was less hectic in those days. I, like now, was very homesick and wanted, desperately, to go back. He would tell me that I was crazy and that life was better in the U.S.!

I remember the role he — and for that matter, Denis Carr, of ‘The Brigadoons’ — played at the obviously memorable 2011 Highland Games, which took place on the weekend of 9/11. It was a very ‘charged’ game. I wrote this, in a post here, in 2012. You should read it. It talks about the 2001 Games as well as Gordon playing for the Queen in a sinking rowing boat!

I also wrote about Gordon here — when I did a post about his son’s bagpipes getting confiscated by U.S. customs because of the ivory parts on the 1936 bagpipes.

Great shame. A great loss.

I read some of his Facebook timeline. Wow. It had not been fun for him over the last couple of years.

I could not, for the world of me, find out how old Gordon was. Doing some extrapolations from comments associated with posted pictures I have a sinking feeling that he is much younger than I — which makes him quite young.

Gordon Webster, R.I.P.

David Rockefeller’s Acadia, Maine, House At ‘Seal Harbor’ For Sale — For $19M.

Click to ENLARGE and read snippet here. Original at: realestate.boston.com

A truly historic, iconic and charming place — well worth the $19M I think. It is all supposedly going to charity per the longstanding philanthropy of the Rockefeller family to the Acadia area starting with his father, the GREAT John D. Rockefeller who built the amazing Acadia Carriage Roads and the spectacular Lodges. See the family tree, that I augmented, below. I had to see it visually since I get confused as to which Rockefeller did what particularly so because there is also ‘David Jr.’ whose is still very active in the Acadia area.

While I have not seen the house I am very familiar with ‘the point‘ it is on. I visit it often since one of my favorite micro-hikes, the ‘Cooksey Drive Overlook‘ with its superb panoramic views, is there. This is an area with some of the most exclusive mansions of the area — including that once owned by Martha Stewart.

David Rockefeller died, three months short of his 102nd birthday, on March 20, 2017. This is was precipitated this sale his children not wanting it since they have other places around Acadia! It has to be nice.

Would The Buddha Really Have Said “When You Love A Flower, You Water It Daily”?

by Anura Guruge

buddha

I saw this on Facebook Friday, December 16, 2016.

As soon as I saw this it struck me, immediately and viscerally, as incongruous.

Why?

I really don’t remember hearing much about the Buddha, i.e., Gautama Buddha, talking about love! That is true and in my youth I was very immersed in Buddhism and would have remembered if ‘love’ was a major plank of the Buddha’s teaching.

Got me thinking. Gautama Buddha and love! Hhhhmmmm.

This was a man who walked away from his newly born son, supposedly his only child, without a backward glance or any regrets — within 24 hours of the son being born! This was a man who walked away from his doting wife. Why? Because he fretted that life was misery. I only started seeing this aspect of the Buddha over the last 15 – 20 years. I do not see him as what you would call an affectionate person.

Then there is his WHOLE thing about ATTACHMENTS. Love is the ultimate form of attachment.

And then on further reflection I realized that it is very unlikely that the Buddha would have said: “When You Love A Flower, You Water It Daily”.

Three reasons.

  1. This would have created an attachment to a ‘thing’, i.e., the flower, that by nature would soon die. That was anathema to the Buddha. So, that was strike one.
  2. The Buddha was BIG into flowers — as ‘things’ that should be used when meditating, and doing so by focusing on how a fresh, beautiful flower would soon die, wither away and become unsightly. Strike two.
  3. The Buddha would have known that you don’t water a flower per se, and that any amount of watering would not permit it to last ‘that long’. Strike three.

I could be wrong. But, this does not sound like a saying from the Buddha. Enlighten me IF I am wrong. I am all ears.

Thanks. Merry Christmas.

Matthew, who is very busy working on his latest software application venture (which is actually quite promising and exciting) came up for the weekend — to take his two youngest sisters fo dinner. It was good. So this is Matthew Gordon Guruge on Saturday, October 24, 2015.

I have now had a Le Pan 10.2″ Android Tablet for just under 48 hours — it was delivered late Monday afternoon. So far, so good. My 2nd Android Tablet, the 7th Android Tablet we have had — and the first which is not a 7″. I got it from Walmart — as part of their ‘warranty’ program.

This one was a replacement for an Asus MemoPad 7 Tablet which died after 7 months. It is night-and-day compared with the Asus. The Le Pan, which I got after some intensive (but as ever rushed) research, is ALL that all the reviews say: it is fast, it has a beautiful display and the battery life is appalling. The latter is NOT really a problem for me. I am NOT a big user of pads. Most days, MAX I will use one for 30 minutes — 20 minutes of that between 8:20 and 9:00 am in the morning, lying in bed, drinking my coffee and ‘watching’ CNN/CNBC. Even the 10.2″ screen is too little for me. I like to have close to 40″ at my disposal.

We got our first Google Nexus 7 in July 2012 — the very first day they were available in the U.S. I had pre-ordered one, for Teischan, through Google and it was delivered on the GA [General Availability] date. Teischan went through three (3) Nexus 7s! I guess 7 year olds and Pads are not the best combination in the world. Christmas 2013, after she had been without a pad for a few weeks (though she had a brand new Windows 8 laptop), I got her a cheap, $79, Visual Land 16GB 7″ Pad from Walmart. It appears to do all she wants — which is mainly YouTube and some Websites, e.g. Disney. But of late I have noticed she is using her laptop more than her pad. Devanee has had a Nexus 7, 16GB since October 2012, and much to all of our amazement, managed to keep it intact all this time.

The Asus I got, which is the same really as the Nexus 7, was never stellar. I never really cared for it. It was temperamental.

Like the Le Pan much more — but the Le Pan is also twice as much!

So this is what my latest “Google Play” device dashboard looks like. Yes, all the Android Pads are on MY gmail account. Just seemed easier with the kids, though they also have their own accounts. I only display the working pads — for obvious reasons. Transferring APPS from a ‘dead’ pad to a new one is a piece of cake. Just select the APP and hit install. The name of the new Pad will appear and just say OK.

I hope the Le Pan works out. I am so fed up with getting new Pads. I will, of course, keep you posted.

The Chilling & Disturbing Elliot Rodger’s (Santa Barbara Shooter) YouTube Video From Night Before. WOW!

The link was sent to me from a friend who lives in Santa Barbara.

My friend’s comment to my inquiry whether they were OK (given that they are a very active and large family): “Yes, Thanks for asking, check out the last YouTube video for the 22 year old shooter who could not get laid since puberty despite in his view, being a “Alpha Male” and “Supreme Gentleman””.

This is BEYOND crazy.

Son of the Assistant Director of “Hunger Games”!

This is, obviously, one sick PUP.

Didn’t anybody REPORT this video to the police! Nothing on Facebook? Twitter?

I have to assume that a bunch of folks could be thought as being complicit.

What can I say?

Always said, sans rancor, that he was always cleverer and more capable than his ever plodding father. I am glad.
