His work, i.e., that of Egon Schiele, is being glorified in in Boston, at the MAGNIFICENT Museum of Fine Arts, alongside that of his mentor and compatriot Gustav Klimt.

But, the Austrian Tourist Board using his nudes to promote travel to Austria and that is not going down well in certain puritanical quarters.

While it would be crass to call his nudes controversial, they sure are provocative — and that is both good and bad. They definitely attract attention, which is beneficial but it also means that some  folks will take umbrage to them.

That the Austrians got the necessary permissions and permits from NYC is a miracle in its own right. Even if they are now forced to take the ads. down, Austria shure would have got their monies worth, if not more from the added publicity they managed to garner. It is very possible that they actually bargained that they might be able to provoke a controversy and with that lost of media coverage. Well they succeeded.

This was a joint ‘Klimt – Schiele‘ exhibition at the MAGNIFICENT Boston Museum of Fine Arts which we visited on Tuesday.

While I was very familiar with Klimt, I had never heard of Egon Schiele. They were contemporaries and compatriots and Egon is said to Klimt’s protégé. I looked him up. Hhhmmm! Seems he was a bit of an unsavory character with an unhealthy interest in children! Kind of interesting that he would be featured alongside Klimt by a museum in Boston. Interesting. You should look jim up.

Interesting work. He sure could draw. Of that there is no doubt or debate.

He died the same year as Klimt, 1918. So it the centenary of their deaths. Egon, who died of the ‘Spanish Flu’ was 28, Klimt, who also died of the ‘flu’, was 55.
