When I lived in Meredith, on the Lake, on Mile Point (when there was but 5 houses there), 1996 – 1999, the “Hobo Railway” went right past the house. It was neat. Knew all the engineers and conductors.

Now that the pope’s very personal correspondence with Polish Anna Teresa Tymieniecka, which began 3-years ahead of him becoming pope, has been made very public by the PBS special it becomes clearer as to why the pope was very explicit that he wanted his ‘personal notes’ — i.e., personal correspondence included — burned upon his death.

As you can see from the excerpt in my book, “The Next Pope — 2011“, this was never done. The pope would not be pleased, though to be fair PBS has yet to find anything truly incriminating.

First and foremost there are two things wrong with the TITLE of this PBS special. The title for the pope is dead WRONG! He is “Saint Pope John Paul II” or “Pope Saint John Paul II“. It is important that ‘Pope’ is in the title along with Saint. Plus, and this is important, he is NOT, and I REPEAT, NOT “John Paul”. He is, was and will always be “John Paul II“. There is another Pope John Paul who will one day be a Saint. They actually got this pope’s name dead wrong too! When talking about his election in 1978, and then Cardinal Karol Jzef Wojtyla paying his homage to the new pope, they referred to the pope as “John Paul”. NO. He was NEVER, EVER “John Paul”. From the moment he accepted the papacy he was “John Paul I”. These are small but important things that PBS should have got right.

Then the title claims “secrets” — in plural. But from what I can see this program is all about his relationship with Polish Anna Teresa Tymieniecka (who by the way had a Hanover, New Hampshire connection). The program tries to insinuate that it was a platonic relationship with no physical element. But there is no proof either way. Plus popes are notorious for their scandalous very intimate relationship with women, married women as well, over the millennia. So in the scheme of things this is not such a big deal.

What would have been more interesting is the oft stated belief that the Pope was a widow or a divorcee! He supposedly having been married, young, ahead of WW II.

So bit of a disappointing and tedious program. Just one SECRET and it is not that intriguing unless there is proof that she was actually his mistress in the accepted connotation of such relationships.

I have always liked Subway BUT since having an ‘Applewood Pulled Pork‘ chopped salad in mid-August I have been a great fan of their chopped salads.

I even started chopping my salads — and I eat a LOT of salads, near daily on my diet.

phillysubwayLast night on the way back from ‘Revels‘ (or what purported to be ‘Revels’) at Dartmouth we stopped at a Subway — for Devanee and I, before stopping at McDonalds for Teischan. (Deanna was full from our late lunch).

Devanee, at my urging, for a footlong BLT — so that she would have some leftover for today also.

I had the Big Philly Cheesesteak, with added Swiss, in a chopped salad with the Chipotle Dressing. It was divine. Wow.

I could go and eat another of those salads right now.

Their chopped salads are GOOD. If you haven’t tried one please do yourself a favor and think of all the carbs you are avoiding.

Enjoy.

This will make YOUR week
and possibly weak at the knees!

I raved about ‘Christmas at Luther’ last year.

Indubitably the best Christmas music show on TV in 2012.

I had it on my DISH DVR as protected and watched bits of it daily.

The Luther College Norsemen were my favorites.

This guy … WOW.

I have a son who must be roughly his age.
I think of that.
I am very proud of my intellectually bestriding son.
This guys parents must be so, so proud of him.

Luther College, of course, is doing their annual Christmas shows.

What I can’t determine is whether PBS will show us the 2013 show or even repeat the 2012 performance.

Till then PLEASE enjoy this.

It is my early Christmas Present to YOU ALL.

BaysiderCoveringAlton

It says ‘covering Alton’ on the banner, but I guess that is just an indication of who should pay to advertise with them.

This Monday’s joint Alton (Selectmen/) Board of Health & Alton Central (ACS) School Board meeting to discuss healthy and safety related issues at ACS that had been aired during the contentious $18M bond fiasco was probably the most germane and interesting ACS-related meeting held this year — barring the ‘that was more fun than your typical three ring circus’ deliberative session on February 3.

So how come today’s ‘The Baysider’, purportedly Alton’s newspaper has no mention, at all, about this pivotal meeting. It isn’t as if they didn’t have the time. Their deadline is Tuesday and they have routinely covered other School Board meetings that were held on a Monday — that very week, in the Thursday edition.

I noticed that Tim Croes, the regular reporter, did not appear to be present. But, I know that they sometimes use other stringers, such as a lady called ‘Elizabeth‘ who tends to do a bangup job. So, when I got back, that very night, I fired off an e-mail to my friend Josh Spaulding, the  bestriding editor of ‘The Baysider’, asking him who covered that meeting. I got a response fairly soon (as is typically the case with Josh). He did not know! He does not keep track of Alton meetings. Tim is supposed to decide.

Hhhmmmm.

So what is the deal here? I have one and ONLY ONE concern. Was this political? By conveniently ignoring the coverage of this meeting (for at least a week), ‘The Baysider’ is letting the news go cold and as such demoting the issue.

The problem here is that I know various people who, rightly or wrongly, charge ‘The Baysider’ as being the OFFICIAL ACS newspaper.

It has now come to light that Tim Croes has been employed by ACS as a substitute teacher this 2012-2013 school year.
Tim nor ‘The Baysider’ disclosed this conflict of interest.
Read this post of May 3, 2013.

At this meeting the ACS School Board was asked a lot of pointed questions. By not covering the meeting many of the tax payers in Alton are being deprived of a chance to hear about what took place. All I want to know is is that but a coincidence. Yes, Tim, before he got his ‘get out of jail card’ that permitted him to attend Brewster, was an ACS alumni. So did ‘they’ lean on him not to cover the meeting? I do not know. But, this bothers me.

I have been particularly busy this week, since coming back from vacation, trying to publish yet another book. I just managed to get that done a few minutes ago. So, I now have a few ‘minutes’ breathing space before I start on another new book tomorrow. I had asked Deanna to find me the video of Monday’s meeting. I want to do at least one post on the “he said“, “no he didn’t“, “he definitely said ‘possibly’“, “no he didn’t“, aspect of the meeting, which dominated much of the first part of the proceedings, by juxtapositioning the questions from the Health Board and the answers from the School Board with the relevant clips from the deliberative session. At least as of Tuesday night Deanna couldn’t find the video from Monday. I will get to that.

If ‘The Baysider’ is not going to cover these meetings I will have to see what I can do. I am too old to start getting minutes. I did that 30 years ago. Maybe I could find somebody who will help out. But it irks me that the purported local paper does not feel that it is their job to cover such meetings. Funnily enough this is the SECOND instance, just this year, when ‘The Baysider’ just happened to forget to cover a crucial School Board meeting happening. Recall we had to hear about the Steve Miller ‘brandishing‘ incident from WMUR because ‘The Baysider’ waited until the following week to mention it.

Hhhmmmm.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this meeting, but I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised and impressed by the incisiveness, diligence, acumen and forthrightness of the Board of Health (a.k.a. ‘selectman’), in particular Loring Carr, David Hussey and Cydney Johnson. Having got used to the imperious manner in which some of the ACS Board members treat the tax paying plebs of Alton, it was amazing to hear Town officials that seem to actually care about what the citizens have said, are saying and have voted. This was a good meeting, though I am sure some on the School Board and in the ACS administration did not think so. Credibility was very much at stake. I urge people to watch the video recording. I did not see any newspaper reporters, though they might have come in disguise. I would love to see this very forum meet more often. Not sure how that can be made to happen. But, I have to say, today was good.

I went looking for the HAPIfork and found this instead. Definitely looks like a FitBit alternative. I am sure Deanna, still FitBit’s biggest advocate, will check it out. Looks bigger. But, the ‘app’ looks cuter. They also appear to be pusing the motivational aspect. Yes, FitBit tries to do that, but it is not a key aspect. Yes, I know there are also other products, but I haven’t checked them out.

This gizmo isn’t shipping yet. I can’t even find a price. Given the publicity the HAPIfork is getting, this tracker will garner a following. I really haven’t looked at the HAPIfork in detail as yet. No, I do not plan to get one. Yes, it is well known that I eat fast, very fast. That is to be expected. ‘Type A‘ folks eat fast. A trademark trait. I am NOT a ‘Type A’. That has been well confirmed. I am a ‘Hyper Type A++++ … that reads the fine print on the toothpaste tube while brushing my teeth‘. I didn’t know this, but that ‘reading the toothpaste tube while brushing your teeth’ is what really separates the wheat from the chaff when it comes to Type A personalities. I was told this by a psychologist. It is not a bad trait. Just means that the brain craves stimulation. Plus, unless I am eating out, I very rarely eat without also doing something else. At night, I eat late. Invariably past 8pm. I usually watch TV while eating. Growing up I read while I ate. Actually my grandmother used to sit by my side and feed me so that I could concentrate on my reading. My father loves telling people about how old I was when this was still happening. Didn’t do me much harm. Got a lot of reading done. So, I doubt whether I will be slowing down my eating, HAPIfork or no HAPIfork.

The high-tech gizmo that we next need to get is this. Our second ‘ultrasound’ toothbrush, this time a high-end Philips, bit the dust just before Christmas. We had had it for about 2 years, and Deanna and I both used it. I detest the FAKE ‘ultrasound’ toothbrushes that dentist promote. They are not ‘ultrasound’. They just vibrate faster. This ‘Emmi-Dent‘, from what I can see, is the REAL McCoy. You don’t even brush with it! Plus you need special nano-technology toothpaste. That is cool. I will keep you posted on this toothbrush.
