What is interesting to I is that there has yet to be any serious comparisons against the much vaunted Fuji X-T2 — which I, to my own surprise, decided, at the 11th hour, to forgo.

To my eyes the Canon M5 is a Fuji slayer!

Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 & LX100 Sensor & White Balance Appear To Be Affected By The Cold.

by Anura Guruge

Recent examples from very cold days.
In each case I had to use Manual White Balance.

Given that I live in New Hampshire (year round (at least for now)) and I am trying to take at least 6 photographs a day, without fail, for my “6 Images a Day” series, I use both my Panasonics, the Lumix FZ1000 & the Lumix LX100, in whatever temperature it is outside. Yes, I know that there must be a temperature rating for these cameras — BUT I haven’t checked. My rationale is that IF I am outside then my camera should be able to be outside with I.

OK. I just checked.
32°F (0°C) to 104°F (40°C).
That seems rather conservative.

I could be VERY WRONG but I have noticed that the cold — and by that I mean below 32°F (0°C) — seems to affect the Lumix sensors and in particular White Balance. In the cold everything literally has ‘cold’ greyish tint. I am forced to MANUALLY juggle White Balance and I am not very good at that. IF I can find some white I know, quite well, as to set a ‘Custom WB Setting’ by pointing at the white and hitting ‘set’. Today I broke down and ordered some White Balance cards! For $9 I can afford it and the layard more than anything else was the clincher. I can carry the cards with me.

Click to access Amazon product page. I did NOT spend much time looking around. They all seemed to be in the $9 range — and I liked the lanyard. I will let you know when I get the cards.

I did a quick Google and found some evidence that maybe others too have seen this ‘affected by the cold’. Well I guess Panasonic’s stock answer will be that I am using it outside of spec. I will have to check the specs for the Fuji X-T2 — more than likely my next camera. Just wanted to share this with you all.
