I Had Never Heard Of ‘Teqball’ Till Today — Had YOU?

by Anura Guruge

I guess I do NOT (luckily) spend enough time on social media watching ‘pop trends’. When it comes to sport, other than faithfully, always watching the SuperBowl in its entirety, my main (if not only) passion is cricket. Yes, I will occasionally watch some Rugby. That is it.

I learned about Teqball when I read that Sri Lanka has created a Website for the sport! Ah? I had Google it. That is how I learnt about it.

I watched the above video. It is OK. I prefer ping-pong played by the Chinese! Teqball seems too contrived & I may be wrong but I do not think any other body part can match our hands in terms of putting speed on a ball in this type of close quarters. Yes, of course, the feet can kick very hard. But, you can’t do that in this setting. I love the speed of table tennis, yes, ping-pong at speed.

Well, I just wanted to make sure YOU have heard of Teqball. Now you have. No thanks necessary. That is why I am here.

It Felt Real Good To Watch Some Proper Test Cricket After Nearly 3-Months & ‘The Century’ Was A Bonus. (Smile)

by Anura Guruge

I haven’t watched any cricket in nearly 3-months. There wasn’t anything compelling. Yes, there was Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh but those matches tend to be boring grinds. So, I have been watching Netflix & Amazon Prime & quite enjoying it.

But, I sure wanted to watch this England v New Zealand series. I haven’t seen New Zealand, in any format, in nearly (or possibly even more than) a year. So, it was good to see them though I was disappointed to see ‘Kane Williamson’, a cricketer that I am rather fond of, get out rather cheaply.

I make a point of trying NOT to divulge SCORES or big news in my headlines. I do NOT want to spoil it for those that haven’t got around to watching the highlights. They don’t have to read the BODY of the post. But, they might SEE the Header.

That said, getting to watch “Devon Conway’s” debut century was a bonus. Right from the very start I had this feeling that he would score a debut century. And, was I right. Nice, classy effort. Nothing flamboyant. Just very workmanlike.

Well, this is good. Watching cricket, on a daily basis, is very much a part of my life.

China Is Becoming Quite Blatant That It Has BIG Plans For Sri Lanka!

A Sri Lankan friend, living in Canada, send me this YouTube.

For those of you who may not be familiar, ‘Sinhala‘, the language of the majority Sinhalese, is the predominant language of Sri Lanka.

China already through various deals & LEASES owns a fair chunk of coastal Sri Lanka — including one strategic port.

Various administrations, over the last two decades, have out of desperation or for personal gain, given China more & more access & sway over the country. China is happy to lend Sri Lanka lost of money (with backhanders in tow) as long as the loans are backed up by access to land & water.

It is no secret that China doesn’t have enough fertile land to support it population. They are buying & leasing land all over the world.

Sri Lanka has the advantage of being rather close & with great ports.

Some discerning Sri Lankans are understandably concerned. Sri Lanka has only been independent since 1948. Will it still be truly independent in 2048?

Electrocution Of Elephants In Sri Lanka Is Tragic & Unforgivable BUT Sadly, Understandable.

Yes. It is barbaric! It is indeed criminal. It is unforgivable — especially in a Buddhist country where Buddhists, supposedly, value life & elephants play a major role in Buddhist temple processions.

But, alas, I can understand!

It is easy to be ‘holier than thou‘ when you are NOT hungry & facing poverty. And that is the problem here. Elephants are eating crops & impacting the livelihood of poor, hungry village people. That is why I can’t get too angry about this. What would I do.

Yes, I have never had to make such a choice.

In my youth I planned to go back to Ceylon (as it was then) & devote my life to protecting the wildlife. Well, I didn’t. Do I still have time? I don’t know.

But, think about it.

What can we do?

Why Do Countries Like Indonesia Need Submarines?

by Anura Guruge

Google ‘Indonesia submarine‘ for more. Above article from ‘USA Today.

Click to ENLARGE & read here. Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_submarine_operators

Prior to hearing about the recent, & tragic, disaster which needlessly ended 53 lives, it never even occurred to me that “third world countries” like Indonesia even had submarines. I was staggered to realize they did. I had to go looking for a list of countries that still had submarines &, as usual, Wikipedia did not let me down.

I will ask the question: WHY? Oh, WHY?

What are they going to do with a submarine? They dare NOT torpedo a ship from another country. That would result in outright war. So, why bother.

Please, do not insult my intelligence (however, little it might be) by saying it is for reconnoitering. Please. This is not the 1915s or even 1940s. Today we have radar, sonar, satellites & planes. You can even listen for other submarines with sonar & underwater mikes. Submarines serve no purpose.

Yes, the larger powers kind of need them for their nuclear posturing. But, what was the last time a country had the guts to use a submarine in anger. The ‘Falklands War’ in 1982? That was nearly 40-years ago.

This is nothing but puerile ego, oneupmanship — monkey see, monkey do.

I was so relieved to see that Sri Lanka was not on that list. Yes, of course, the Sri Lankan navy would love some but they just don’t have the budget. That is a good thing.

Think about it. Why do these countries need submarines. THINK.

All The Cricket Action Is Now On ‘ESPN+’, NOT ‘Willow TV’; ‘Willow’ TV Is Sucking Wind.

by Anura Guruge

There is plenty of LIVE cricket again
BUT NOT on Willow TV.

It would appear that Willow TV screwed up BIG TIME when it came to getting 2021 cricket series coverage licenses.

They have NO REAL, i.e., MEN’s International, cricket for the next 3.5-months. But, in the meantime some hard to ignore series are taking place: West Indies vs Sri Lanka T20 & Australia vs New Zealand. In past years these would have been on Willow TV. They had the ‘franchise’ for all those countries. But, not right now.

So, a BIG Heads Up. Don’t sign-up (or RENEW) Willow TV before checking what is coming up.

I was FORCED to check ESPN+. 12-, 13-years ago ESPN+ carried a lot of cricket. Then the likes of Willow stepped in. The tide seems to be turning again.

So, as I said, a Heads Up.

Sri Lanka February 4, 2021, 73rd Independence Day — Stories From The Past.

by Anura Guruge

Happy Sri Lanka (or Ceylon)
Independence Day 2021.

73-year anniversary.

Wow.

It has sure been a chequered seven-decades.

Google yet again has recycled a previous
Google Doodle for this year.
Well, it is better than nothing.
At least this year they got the title right.
‘Independence day’, NOT ‘National Day‘.

Do NOT forget that it was I, 7-years ago, that contacted Google & requested a Google Doodle for Independence Day. SMILE.

My 2013 Google Doodle & the one in 2015.

Some of my prior posts well worth revisiting.

August 27 — An Anniversary That Is Only Important To I (2020 Edition).

Adoptive Parents got married August 27, 1952 (68-years ago).

I have spent TOO much time in the U.S.

I try to mark this day, viz., August 27, every year with a post. To be honest it is only meaningful to I and I am the only one that cares,

Wow. I left Ceylon 53-years ago. As I get older the percentage of my life I spent in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) shrinks.

Left from Katunayake Airport which in 1967 was pretty small — just one, ‘one-room’ building. Quite a few people came to see us off. It was night. I think the flight left around 9pm. We left on a Pan Am 707. My first time in a jet — though I had flown quite a bit on DC-3s. I had always liked the 707 and it is still one of my favorite planes today. First stop, for a day, for Athens, Greece.

44-years, to the day, I walked into IBM! Wow. Much water has flowed under the bridge in Romsey.

P.S., Lord Mountbatten’s assassination was on August 27 — in 1979. I was still at Hursley and remember it well.

Sri Lanka’s Draconian COVID-19 Lockdown & Curfew — Justifiable Or Overkill?

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. Headline from today — PLUS two of MY posts re. Sri Lanka & China. Just search for them on the block. Shouldn’t be hard to find.

Yes, of course, absolutely bloody brilliant. WOW. Who would have thought.

Just 7 deaths — though, of course, even ONE death is too much.

They, especially the government & health professionals deserve much kudos & applause for this superhuman achievement.

Left the developed countries in the dust by quite a FEW orders of magnitude.

Yes, the numbers may not be fully accurate. But, I doubt whether, worst case, it is off by much more than say 1/100th. So, maybe 64,900 cases & 700 deaths. That is still absurdly low.

Until last night, when a cousin living in Sri Lanka, who happens to be a doctor, told me the details, I was NOT aware of the draconian lockdown & curfew.

They shut down all ‘ports’ — inbound & outbound. Not just passengers, goods as well.

It has been FORTRESS SRI LANKA for over a month.

They sure managed to keep the virus in check. BRAVO.

But, but, but … was it worth it?

At WHAT a huge cost?

I am sure that they will study this at Harvard, in years to come, as a Case Study. Was it the right thing to do?

Yes, when they started the lockdown, they, obviously, did not know what the infection & death rates were going to be.

But, the unintended consequences! WOW.

It, of course, has decimated the economy and the economy was already in BAD SHAPE following the tourist slump post the Easter 2019 ‘incident’.

People will DIE because of poverty!

This is sad. This is BAD.

Yes, of course, this being Sri Lanka there is dirty politics involved!

And China.

China will gain even more control.

All in all, I do not think this is good.

But, I am NOT an expert and I have no skin in the game.
