I had expected to find a Stamp Set for this year’s, i.e., April 14, 2016, Sinhala New Year, i.e., Aluth Avurudda. IF they did I could not find them — and please put me right. I will, of course, update this post.

Here is the link to the Philatelic Bureau of Sri Lanka. I couldn’t see any New Year related announcements.

We were in Arizona all of last week
and didn’t get back till late on Saturday, May 2, 2015.
So, unlike last year, when Vesak was mid-month,
I didn’t get a chance to do much Vesak-related coverage this year.
Plus, I was heads down most of April trying to get my
latest book published before we left for Arizona.
And I did manage to get it done on April 22nd.

But, there was a lot from last year and I am glad to see
that a lot of people are finding them this year.

As I suspected there was NO Google Doodle for Vesak.
Google tends to stay away from religious events — by and large
(though there are, of course, exceptions).
But, never mind. This story caught my eye.
This is even better.

They did it last year, i.e., issue a set of ‘Vesak stamps‘,
and it was no doubt a BIG HIT.

Never known to miss an opportunity to capitalize
on past successes and knowing the
insatiable appetite of the Buddhist populace
for anything to venerate Buddhism ‘they’
have done it again.
We have 3 new Vesak stamps for 2015.
As is to be expected they are rather
ornate but pleasing on the eye — with two of them
at least highlighting Sri Lankan Buddhist worship.

Both images from ‘Sri Lanka Stamps‘ — click here to access and buy.

This was my first Christmas since turning 60 in September.

So the theme, in terms of what I got this Christmas, was nostalgia.

The vintage, tin train engine was a bonus and delightful surprise.  Wasn’t expecting that.

Also got this First Day cover. Deanna found it in the same shop, in Alton no less, where she found the train engine.

She knew I would want it … plus the coronation was 60 years ago … the year of my birth.

It is neat. Delighted with it too.

I used to have a TON of First Day covers — nearly a full set of all that were released in Ceylon
from about 1950 to 1970.
My adoptive grandfather used to be a postman.
He would get those First Day covers for me.
I also used to, as all proper ‘British’ boys were supposed to do, collect stamps.
Had all of the stamps, albums and First Day covers in a huge metal box.
The older kids now have it and won’t even let me have a look at the box.

So this is the ONLY First Day cover I now have.

Maybe I should make an attempt to get some more.

They take chocolate very seriously, as they should, in Belgium.

Since I look like I am made out of dark chocolate I have always been ultra partial to all things chocolate. This is a hoot. Belgium actually is quite famous for its chocolate. All in all it is a fun place. I used to go to Brussels often on work; had a great gig doing 5 day training sessions for Philips sales folks. Just off the central square in Brussels they used to have a ‘Russian Tea Cafe’. They served brown ‘tea’ in Pyrex, see through mugs. There was only one thing that made this tea different — it was highly inflammable, and waiters would invariably hold a lighter to them and catch them on fire before they left you table. In reality it was all vodka with a perforated spoon with tea leaves dipped into it for color and a bit of flavor. So you were consuming vodka in the quantities that people drink tea. It was a riot. A few times I saw women being carried out, horizontally. They were totally stiff. Like cardboard cutoffs. Typically two men would carry them out like carrying a carpet. I guess that is what the vodka would do. Never bothered me. These training sessions were from 9 to 5 and I was on my feet for all but 75 minutes of that. But, I would party till 2 or 3 in the morning and still be fine for the next day. So, I am quite fond of Brussels and Belgium. Even thought about moving there at one point.
