One FULL-YEAR Of Walking At Least 12,000 Steps A Day — Without A Single Exception.

Prior to April 17, 2020, I had this notion of a ‘Day Off’. One day of reduced exercise to give my muscles a chance to rest. It was 3-days on (i.e., of exercise), 1-day off. That meant I exercised 6-days out of 7. I had been doing that for decades — BUT that was when I used to run/jog.

But, after I busted my quadricep tendon, which required major knee surgery, & as I approached 65, I transitioned to WALKING. Yes, there is a difference in the effort & energy expended.

So, I decided that the ‘Day Off’ shouldn’t mean I did less than 10,000-steps, actually 12,000 steps.

Once I dropped this ‘Day Off’ I noticed I was getting close to 500,000 steps a months. COOL.

A NEW GOAL: 500,000-steps a month.

Yes., 500,000 steps a month is easier in months with 31-days.

I was REAL concerned about February; 28 days & COLD. But, I prevailed.

During this year I had three (3) cataract surgeries — they had to operate on my right eye TWICE. Well, I still managed to get in my at least 12,000 steps a day even on those days. The surgeon knew of my desire to walk & as such added some EXTRA STITCHES to keep the lens in place. He took them out, with teezers, when I went in for my check-in.

So, that was last year.

I feel good. I feel great. You should try it.

Yes, Yes, yes. I know. I always take things to the ‘extreme’. I SURE am NOT hurting/harming anyone or myself. My time. My most precious resource. MY TIME. Well, I do not squander it. New thing is listening to educational AUDIBLES while I do the bulk of my walking. SMILE. I am learning. I am learning. Yes, yes, yes.

500,000 steps a month is now becoming the new norm. 4-months of that. SMILE.

Still on track.
So, averaging 2,100-miles right now
… with SUMMER to come.

Had never thought about MY STEPS in MILES until I happened to see it on Garmin Connect.

Neat.

When you do the sums it comes out quite mundane.

JUST 6.2-miles a day. Not much.

These days I do around 7-miles a day.

So, I assume that 2,100 — 2,200 miles a year will be my new standard.

I Am Outpacing & Out Climbing All Of My Garmin Peers, Again. (SMILE).

by Anura Guruge

>The key here is that this is for my (rather advanced) age group, i.e., 65-69 (as you can see at the top). Garmin does NOT give us any clues as to how big (or more to the point, small) this group might be. For all I know there might just be a handful of us in this bracket — in which case this metric is pretty useless.

I am also mature enough to realize that there will be a larger population of non-Garmin users who walk more STEPS than I do. However, unless they happen to be a professional Sherpa in the Himalayas or a tour guide in the Alps, I doubt there are too many who climb as many floors/day as I do. And in case you are wondering, it averaged 56 floors/day over the last month. That is 560′ elevation gain each day.

As for steps, it was 15,260 steps/day over the last month. Not bad considering that half of that was in February with snow/ice on the ground and rather frigid temps.

It still makes me smile and that alone is reward enough. SMILE.

Despite Knee Surgery 3-Months Ago, I Walk More Steps & Climb More Floors, Than Most My Age.

This is per my Garmin, which I wear 24×7.

I live in a 4-storey house; my office is on the 4t floor, bedroom on the 3rd, kitchen on the 2nd and main/family TV on the 1st. So, I have to go between all 4-floors, multiple times a day, even when I was on crutches. Just for the record, my Garmin was pretty appalling at counting steps & floors when I was on crutches because I was not moving my arms enough to make the accelerometer register movement.

I live on the side of a 1,440′ mountain. I walk/run the road that goes up/down this mountain. So, anytime I am on that road, on foot, I cover a fair amount of elevation. Typically I have 300′ to 700′ of elevation gain a day when I go up and down this road. I love it.

I still haven’t started running. But, for the last 4 weeks I am making a concerted attempt to walk at least 10,000 steps a day. And it is working.

So, I am happy. I have LOST quite a bit of weight since my surgery! That was a bonus. Yes, I doubled, maybe even tripled, down on it. That has helped.

So, do NOT let knee surgery slow you down. SMILE.
