I no longer get daily posts from them, BUT today I lucked out to get the post (way up top) about Anna Alma-Tadema. Wow. I was mesmerized. Spellbound. It looked like a high-resolution photograph. I still can’t believe it is a painting. Wow.

I had to share it with you. And I am.

Quite the lady. A suffragette as well.

Appears that her father, a knighted ‘Sir’, was quite famous too.

Enjoy.

She reminded me of her … from November.

Think – Today: How Many Stars Can You See, Naked Eye, In The Night Sky?

by Anura Guruge

starsintheskyThis, I hope, must have crossed your mind one night when looking up at the heavens in wonder. Appears to be a lot of stars up there — that you can see, naked eye. So how many do you think (in your hemisphere)?

Think first, then research, then THINK again. Think for the pleasure of thinking.

Yesterday’s ‘Think’: “Suffragette” comes from “suffrage” (which was old French) … directly from the Latinsuffragium” which referred to voting, ballots, the right to vote etc. “Suffer”, on the other hand, comes from Latin “sufferre” which denoted endure, undergo etc.

Think – Today: Does The Word “Suffragette” Have Anything To Do With “Suffering”?

by Anura Guruge

annie_kenney_and_christabel_pankhurstWhere does the word “Suffragette” come from? It sounds like it has something to do with “suffering”. Does it?

Yesterday’s ‘Think’: “Point Blank” comes from the French “pointé à blanc — where ‘blanc’ is French for white. It referred to pointing (straight) at the WHITE circle that appeared in the middle of shooting targets. Meant you were close enough to the target to point straight the the middle (blanc) without having to worry about the trajectory path of the shot/bullet.

I saw it on the HBO schedule and recorded it — thinking it would be good for the kids. This week we watched it during our ‘Family TV’ time. It was outstanding in every way. Lusciously shot with vivid color and amazing detail. Great story, pleasing characters and engaging actors. With “Downton Abbey” (alas) now over “Doctor Thorne” and now this help assuage the need for good British drama. Talking of which, “Suffragette“, which was also recently on HBO, is really good and educational too. And “Carey Mulligan” stars in both.

So check out these movies. You will be glad I told you to. Enjoy.
