Cherries, To My Delight, Are Back At My Supermarket After A 6- Or 7-Month Hiatus.

by Anura Guruge

Until October or November last year I had not realized that fresh Cherries, at least in New Hampshire, are seasonal, i.e., only available during the Summer months. Wow. I had kind of fallen into the belief that all common fruits, these days, were available year round due to ‘cheap’ air transport. I knew that we got fruits, vegetables & flowers, on a regular basis, from Chile, Peru, Greece & Israel.

Appears that this not the case when it comes to cherries. Cherries we get in New Hampshire are from California & they are only available during ‘Summer’. Well now I know. I am going to eat as much as I can over the next few months.

Have You Heard Of ‘Erythritol’, The Healthy, Natural Carbohydrate (i.e., Sugar)?

I was standing at a ‘Market Basketsupermarket checkout this afternoon when I fancied a drink, it being a warm day. These Bai drinks were right next to I so I took one, and by force of habit, read the LABEL. For the last 6-years I rarely, if ever, eat or drink something, WITHOUT reading the label — IF it has one. I try, real hard, to limit my carbs.

So, I am NO STRANGER to Nutritional Labels and especially the Carbohydrate numbers. Trust me when I tell you that this is the first time I have seen ‘Erythritol’ on a label. I was confounded. I knew it had to be a sugar since it was listed as a carbs. What I didn’t know was how bad it would be for I.

So, I had to check.

To be fair I think the jury is still out. I am NOT going to rush off and start consuming large quantities of Erythritol. It seems too good to be true, and in my dotage I am leery of such products.

I also looked up when they started adding (the likes of) Erythritol to food labels. Appears that the FDA gave this the green light in 2009 — 10-years ago. But, reporting it, as yet, from what I can see, appears to be voluntary! That means all manufacturers do not have to list it — which would explain why I had never seen it before.

Hope this helped.

The Spirit Of Christmas — A Manager At Alton’s (N.H.) ‘Hannaford Supermarket’.

This was neat. She, though a manager, was working one of the checkout lanes wearing this neat hat. She only put on the glasses when I asked her if I could take a picture.

It was good. True Christmas spirit and I am sure the ‘kids’ that work there enjoyed it.

Made my day.

Merry Christmas.

BBC “The Syndicate” “Hazelwood Manor” Series — Passable Antidote For “Downton Abbey” Withdrawal.

You can catch it on YouTube.

We happened to see “The Syndicate — Hazelwood Manor” series on BritishAcorn” (on our Roku) last week. Given that it was a series set in a British manor house we started watching it — and within minutes the sickly Lord of the Manor makes a “Downton Abbey” reference. That was cute.

We are all hooked on it as we were with “Downton“. Already seen 5 of the 6 episodes. We did not know about “The Syndicate” series. We assumed that it was meant to be a manor house program. Well this 6 episode series is, but ‘The Syndicate’ per se works on a larger premise. Each series is set in a different work location, a supermarket, a hospital and now a manor house — the syndicate being a group of workers that win the lottery.

Cute. Watchable. Not Downton or Mr. Selfridge. Some holes in the story line, but quite gripping nonetheless, and easy on the eye.

Does show you what would have happened to Downton 90 years from the last, concluding episode.
