The Volvo XC60 (2021) Has An Awesome Digital Dashboard Compass — But Only Visible When In Off-Road Mode!

by Anura Guruge

The $1,700 ‘Premium’ option package that provides a rearview mirror compass.

This is one of the STUPIDEST product positioning decisions I have ever encountered. IF the compass feature is there, & available, AUTOMATICALLY, in OFF-ROAD mode, why can’t it be displayed in other drive modes?

This compass is 10x better than the small ‘heading only’ compass, in the rearview mirror, available with the $1,700 ‘Premium’ option package. And here is the BIGGEST irony, EVEN if you get that package, the much better in-dash digital compass is ONLY available in OFF-ROAD mode.

STUPID. STUPID. STUPID.

Got me thinking. I like Swedes. What is not there to like about them? They are invariably good-looking (if not always blonde), congenial & generous with the booze. But, are they smart? Yes, they invented dynamite. Hhhhmmm. I will have to think about this.

This is NOT smart on the part of Volvo. Very stupid really.

It gets better (or is it worse). You, as the driver, CANNOT select Off-Road mode. On a standard XC60 (2021) there are only 3 displayed — & selectable — drive modes, viz., ECO, COMFORT (the default) & DYNAMIC.

The XC60’s computer, automatically & on-the-fly, determines whether you are off-road. It does NOT switch automatically to off-road. It is DISPLAYED if you happen to look. I guess it detects off-road by how much each tire is slipping relative to the others.

Off-road basically means very-low gearing. The XC60 grinds along & engine braking is automatically applied when going down a grade. Kind of cool.

But, the compass!

Oh, Volvo!

UN Security Council Resolution On Trump’s Jerusalem — How The Countries Voted.

by Anura Guruge

This was the Thursday, December 21, 2017, United Nation Security Council vote as to whether the UN Member States wanted to unilaterally recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel per Trump’s pronouncement last week.

128 countries voted AGAINST such recognition, i.e., AGAINST the U.S.A. These included: United Kingdom (UK), France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Spain, Russia, Sweden, India, Japan, China, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, etc.

Only 8 countries voted with the U.S. and 7 of them are not exactly household names!

Canada, Australia and Mexico, to THEIR SHAME, kowtowed to Trump.

So, now you know.

128 Against — 9 For — 35 Abstained.

The Newly Opened ‘Museum Of Failure’ In Sweden.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access their official Website.

CNN coverage. Google for this and many more.

Clever and I wish it was closer, like in New York or Boston. I hope it is better than the ‘Sex Museum‘ in New York — which shouldn’t, in reality, be too hard.

Right now, newly opened, it does look a bit limited — essentially focusing on some fairly well known product flops, such as Sony’s Betamax (though I was a fan of Betamax and used it for years in the UK because of its superior image quality).

I hope they set out to really showcase failure in all of its myriad, delightful flavors and textures. They should even have a picture of ME!

I will keep an ear to the ground to see what I hear about this endeavor. It would be ironic IF it turned out to be a failure.

Pope Francis’ June 28, 2017 Cardinal Creating Consistory: What Makes It Unusual.

by Anura Guruge

There are a number of things that make this consistory stand-out from the last 17 spanning 38 years.

So let’s look at what makes this consistory somewhat unusual, and as such, special.

  1. It is the SMALLEST consistory, in terms of cardinals being created, since Paul VI’s last one in 1977 when only four cardinals were created — but Paul VI, who instituted both the 120 elector limit and the 80-year ‘cut-off’, never exceeded the 120 limit or created any cardinals who were over 80. Benedict XVI, in his last cardinal creating consistory in November 2012, three-months ahead of his resignation, created 6 cardinals — that being the maximum he could create if he were not to exceed the 120-limit.
  2. The first consistory since March 2006 NOT to be held on a Saturday — the last 7 consistories, four of Benedict XVI’s and three of Francis’ all being Saturday consistories with the celebratory Mass being held on Sunday.
    ….
  3. The first consistory, since John Paul II’s 8th consistory on February 21, 2001 to be held on a Wednesday.
    ….
  4. The first consistory since 1991 to be held on June 28. There is a significance to June 28th. The ‘Feast of Saints Peter and Paul‘, Rome’s two founding Apostles, falls, each year, on June 29. So, by having the consistory on June 28, the Vatican can have the celebratory Mass on this special Feast day. This, as such, is thus a ‘Feast of Saints Peter and Paul‘ consistory. John Paul II was found of such consistories. His 1988 cardinal creating consistory, the one before the 1991 one, was also a June 28 affair. His first ever was on June 30, the day after the feast. Paul VI held two consistories very close to this feast.
    ….
  5. Will create the first ever cardinals from first cardinals from El SalvadorLaosMali, and Sweden — as well as the from all of Scandinavia! That is pretty impressive.
    ….
  6. Bishop José Gregorio Rosa Chávez, auxiliary bishop of San Salvador, El Salvador will become the FIRST AUXILIARY BISHOP to be created a cardinal! His superior the Titular Bishop of San Salvador, El Salvador is NOT a cardinal.
    ….
  7. First of Francis’ consistories not to create a curial cardinal. (This was also true of Benedict XVI’s last consistory).
    ….
  8. First of Francis’ consistories not to create an over-80, non-elector cardinal. (This was also true of Benedict XVI’s last consistory). This is incongruous. There are no limits as to the non-electors and he could have created as many as he wanted.
    ….
  9. Barring deaths, there will be 121 cardinal electors following this consistory — and that number will not drop to the CONCLAVE-VALID 120 till February 2018. This would indicate, unless the Pope is aware of a very ill under-80 cardinal, that the Pope does not foresee a conclave ahead of February 2018.After Francis’ 1st cardinal creating consistory there were 122 electors; 125 after the 2nd and 121 after the 3rd. So he has always gone over the 120 limit.….

The 5 Cardinal Designates, Announced By Pope Francis, For The June 28, 2017 Consistory — By Br. César J. Tobón, L.C.

by Anura Guruge

Another masterful new-cardinal graphic by Br. César J. Tobón of Mexico who has provided us with a similar, and much appreciated, graphics ahead of other cardinal creating consistories and whenever there has been major changes to the Roman curia. His beautiful work is always a joy to behold and an honor to present.

This was a cardinal creating consistory announcement out-of-the blue. Many unusual features and I will do a post on them.

Though this graphic is in Spanish it should be easy enough to decipher.

The five designated cardinals are:

Jean Zerbo, Archbishop of Bamako, Mali.

Juan Josè Omella Omella, Archbishop of Barcelona, Spain.

Anders Arborelius, O.C.D., Bishop of Stockholm, Sweden.

Loius Marie Ling Mangkhanekhoun, of the Institute Voluntas Dei, Titular Bishop of Acque Nuove di Proconsulare, Apostolic Vicar of Paské, Laos.

Gregorio Rosa Chávez, Titular Bishop of Mulli, auxiliary of San Salvador, El Salvador.

Is Pope Francis Being Reckless In Insisting That There Will NEVER Be Women Catholic Priests — EVER?

by Anura Guruge

popewomen

Click to access “LA Times” original, or Google “Pope women priests” for more.

To be fair Pope Francis did hide behind and took cover by continually citing Pope St. John Paul II’s May 1994 Apostolic Letter ‘Ordinatio Sacerdotalis‘ (below) that said the Church does not consider ‘herself’ authorized to allow female priests. That alone is rather a strange statement. The Church has never been static and popes and Ecumenical Councils have changed much over the millennia.

But what was strange was how emphatic Pope Francis was about it.

Agreeing that the exclusion would be FOREVER.

How can he be so sure?

Has he been told so, categorically, by God during their regular discourses? If so shouldn’t he tell us that?

His statements, on the plane back from Sweden, didn’t have the necessary gravitas to even take them close to the vicinity of being deemed infallible. For a start he would have had to be much more formal and make some personal declarations — as opposed to quoting a prior pope.

But this is rather strange. Yes, it is likely that there will be no women priests (as opposed to deacons) in the next 40 years. But that is not even CLOSE to ‘NEVER’.

Click for the Amazon listing for the Sony NEX-7.

Talk about a let down. I saw the ‘B&H’ ad. for an Hasselblad on Facebook. When I saw the price I did get EXCITED. I have always lusted after an Hasselblad! At $1,299 I could seriously afford it — though Deanna would brain me (though she is convinced that I will buy myself another camera (my 3rd in the last few months) before Christmas).

Given that I do NOT keep up with Hasselblads I checked. I was CRUSHED. It is a re-branded Sony NEX-7 and the DEAD GIVEAWAY is that it uses Sony E-mount lenses. It has a different facade — BUT it is NOT manufactured by Hasselblad in Sweden. Instead it is made by Sony in Thailand. Screw that for a game of soldiers. To be fair I have toyed at the idea of getting a NEX.

They are NOT the only ones doing this unbecoming rebranding trick. The Leica VLux is the very same camera as my Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 (with a longer warranty)!

But I am going to wait. Right now my goal is to wait for the Fuji X-T2. We, and by that I do mean us as a family, most likely will get a GoPro for Christmas. I own GoPro stock. So it seems the right thing to do. Devanee would like one.

Rejoice!

This as I say in my post could end by being Sweden’s biggest and best contribution to humankind — surpassing Abba.
(Did YOU know that ‘Abba’, the word, comes from the Bible?).
