Delta Airlines’ Power Hit Fiasco Proves That Today’s Corporations Sacrificing Mission Criticality For Profit.

by Anura Guruge

From the BBC reporting on today’s “6-hour” meltdown. Google for much, much more.

That all of Delta’s systems went down — for at least 6 hours — when their main datacenter in Atlanta, Georgia, got hit by lightning is LUDICROUS.

Since the advent of high-speed, high-capacity optical fiber-based networks in the 1990s we have had the technology, expertise and experience to implement ‘mission-critical’, ‘zero-downtime’, ‘disaster recovery’, mirrored data centers to avoid exactly this type of meltdown.

My speciality in those days, when I was “Mr. SNA” for over 20 years, were these so called ‘Mission Critical’ networks. Systems/Networks that could NOT be down for much more than a FEW MINUTES since such an outage would adversely impact the business mission of an enterprise. This was particularly true for airlines, banks, financial institutes.

That Delta does not have a mirrored data center operation is SAD but telling.

Mirrored, disaster recovery data center operations are HUGELY expensive. No question about that.

So Delta like so many other corporations of today are forgoing ‘mission criticality’ in the interest of profits.

Basically Delta is saying that they are WILLING to take this type of hit, every few years, rather than spend tens of millions of dollars more, EACH YEAR, on maintaining mirrored data centers.

I just wanted YOU to know that this Delta fiasco was eminently avoidable.

Healthcare.gov, though 1,000 times better than it was in 2012, STILL HAS ISSUES.

Today, last day of open enrollment for 2016 IT is stalled — with this PARKING PAGE — unable to cope with the traffic. I guess it is better than what it did in 2012 in such situations — crash.

There are OTHER issues.

It cannot reconcile and determine that you already have completed your application and are all set.

I am getting, at a minimum, 4 e-mails and 1 phone call a day saying that I should apply for insurance WHEN in reality I am ALL DONE — and have even paid my first month premium.

Just a heads up.

Enjoy.

As with most things in my life, of late, my fervent hope that I would be able go through this year WITHOUT having to deal with the dreaded healthcare.gov came to naught. My plan to rely on the automatic re-enrollment, even IF it cost me more, just to avoid the aggravation of dealing with healthcare.gov unravelled, in a hurry, when I found out that I had no choice but to put the two kids on my insurance.

So with utmost trepidation I logged onto healthcare.gov. The system was all primed to handle my re-enrollment.

To be fair the system is at least 1,000 times better than it was in 2012 — and quite a bit better than it was last year.

It is actually getting pretty slick!

95% of the data was preloaded and updating it was a snap. Yes, there is still some infuriating ‘questions loops’ you have to answer BUT it is not too bad.

After saying all of that, in the end, it still SCREWED UP BIG TIME. It ended up saying that my eligibility was different to that of the kids, both minors — and here is the real kicker, they claimed I had ‘better’ eligibility than the kids! That obviously is wrong.

obamacare2016So I had to call the Call Center. 15 minute wait.

Then I got ‘Wendy’ (and I think as with most call centers they use arbitrary aliases).

The healthcare.gov Call Center Reps., from the getgo in 2012, have been SUPERB. Outstanding. Brilliant. Exemplary.

Wendy was magical. She is a genuine veteran. She has been there since the very start in 2012. She knew her marbles.

As soon as I started explaining the problem — and I did NOT have to finish — she knew what had to be fixed.

She fixed it. That is something very nice about the system: the reps can go in there and change values, on your application, without you having to do it.

I then begged her to stay on the line till I enrolled. She did. They really are trained to spend as much time the caller wants. Amazing.

Yes, I could have done the rest on my own BUT it was so much quicker and easier with Wendy.

She advised me to get a ‘Silver’ plan rather than ‘Bronze’. And to be FAIR I no longer care about the cost! ‘They’, THE GOVERNMENT, is going to tax me one way or the other. So might as well get a Silver Plan and pay less taxes rather than get a Bronze and pay more taxes.

Yes, the system, still has problems with document submission. Though I uploaded the documents I am not taking any chances. I am mailing them in too — today.

So that is my healthcare.gov story for 2015.

That I am a avid fan of Fidelity is well known and documented (and I have been a Fidelity customer for over 25 years).

As far as I am concerned Fidelity and Amazon are the TWO BEST companies in the whole wide World. Everyday on this computer I have, all day, one tab with Fidelity on full-time and another with Amazon. Fidelity takes great care of me.

Yes, I have issues with their online system and as THEY have started to appreciate I know what I am talking about when it comes to that system since I use it more than most.

So this NOTIFICATION this morning cracked me up!

Of course, as an ex-programmer, I know why and HOW it happened BUT I also know that if I had written the code (or had been involved in the code review) this would never have happened. Yes, I notified Fidelity and they will be suitably embarrassed.

This APP really should be a built-in standard feature within the Roku System menu. It is not.

Roku, in its ‘Network’ menu, does NOT provide a speed test/bandwidth test — and one really is handy if you are having loading or image quality issues (as can often be the case with say Sling). I had been using an external speed test whilst promising myself that I will check to see if I can get a Roku ‘App’ [actually a channel].

It is easy enough to find IF you Google it.

It is a PRIVATE channel. So it has to be installed from a PC. You need to be able to logon to your Roku account — i.e., you need to know your password.

Other than that it is easy enough. On the Roku, on the System menu, click ‘Check UPDATES’ to force the Roku to download and install the App.

You will love it.

Click at YOUR peril. Best call 1-800-268-9000 though they have issues too.

greyhounderror

Until May of this year, when we had to get to Philadelphia to pick up our Jaguar XJ8, and Amtrak had had its Amtrak 188 Brandon Bostian crash, I had never been a great believer in buses as a means of long distance transport. Yes, we had taken an airport bus to Boston a few times but we really considered that a shuttle rather than anything else.

But the trip in May, when we used two bus services, one from Dover, NH to South Station in Boston (C&J), and then Greyhound from New York to Philadelphia, made a believer out of me. I am now convinced that Greyhound is THE BEST way to get from New York to Philadelphia. It takes exactly 2 hours (barring mishaps). That is about 30 to 40 minutes longer than by train. But it is less than half the price. $44 vs (say) $16 for 30 to 40 minutes — given that you have to hang around stations anyway.

Well I was trying to make a reservation on Sunday. The NEW system kept on giving me the above ERROR message or crashing. WOW. How could Greyhound have gone live with that? That is STUPID. I had no choice but to call the 1-800 268 9000 number. She was helpful enough. She admitted that the new system was NOT working. But here is the crazy part and I was NOT amused. Her system crashed TWICE while she was doing my reservation and she initially quoted me a price that was 50% higher than what it proved to be — because that was what the system told her.

Not good. If Greyhound can’t process reservations they will run into trouble quite quickly.

In my days as a BIG system consultant this was our golden definition of what a MISSION CRITICAL system was — any major airline would go belly up if there reservation system was down for 72 hours. I can’t see that that has changed much over the years and as such Greyhound is flirting with disaster.

canonitdownoct25I know because I have called them up 3 times today, Monday, October 26, 2015. The first time was around noon. The guy I spoke to sounded vague and confused. But on the other two calls I got very proficient ladies who explained exactly what the problem was. They came in this morning to find that the system was ‘going up and down’. It had then been taken down by IT. They weren’t sure when it would be up.

HOPE that they have NOT been hacked, à la Sony. IF they have been hacked we won’t hear about it for weeks. I will not, of course, be amused. As somebody who has bought multiple refurbished cameras directly through them, they have my credit card information.

So, a heads up, if you have dealings with Canaon U.S.A., as I do.

Fidelity, always very nice towards me, has been telling me for 6 months or more that I should try their new “Active Trader Pro” trading platform — especially since I am entitled to free access to it (probably because of my advanced age).

Today I thought I might give it a try to see if I can use it INSTEAD of the new system which does not sit well with me.

As soon as I tried to launch it I was told I needed Microsoft’s ‘Silverlight’ enhanced screen display software. I thought I already had it. Then the problem became apparent. Google Chrome has stopped supporting Silverlight — over the last 6 months or so!

That is a problem. I will not switch from Chrome. It appears that this is a well known issue. I am kind of surprised that Fidelity has not addressed it.

Just a heads up.

Don’t get me wrong, I am Fidelity’s GREATEST and most loyal fan (even if they have stopped giving me any IPO allocations (and maybe as such they are doing me a favor)). Just check this blog. Their accounts reps. are wonderful. I really have never had any serious problems with Fidelity in over 30 years of dealings OTHER than my intense displeasure, over the last few months, with their new ‘Accounts & Trade’ system — specifically its User Interface.

No question, the new system is a vast improvement in that it provides a LOAD more information and does so conveniently. That is a good part.

The atrocious part is how that information is presented. Yes, I have had multiple very productive and pleasant calls with Fidelity about my issues with the GUI (graphical user interface) and I even had a call back, a few weeks ago, to tell me that ALL of my issues have been noted and that each and every one of them WILL be fixed — however, not any time soon!

I am NOT a casual user of the Fidelity system. I have a Fidelity tab open on this PC at least 12 hours a day! No, I don’t trade constantly though I probably trade more often that most. I did three or four trades today. I probably average over one a day. That doesn’t make me an active trader but I am also far from what would be classed a passive one. I check the screens quite often during the day. SMILE. So I know my Fidelity system and Fidelity knows that I know my Fidelity system.

ONCE I discovered and told Fidelity, on June 17, 2015, that the old system had stopped reporting some new transactions I did NOT have any choice but to start using the new system. There was no way I was going to stick with a system that didn’t show me all my recent transactions.

Once I started using it I quickly narrowed down the three (3) key things that were driving me insane.

1/ The fields are way, way, way TOO WIDE and there is no way that you can condense them (and I use a 23″ WIDE screen for my Fidelity tab). With a Fidelity rep in tow I worked out how wide the fields are. Some of the dollar value fields could hold in excess of $99 Trillion values. That is crazy. Basically all the horizontal fields are WAY TOO WIDE and you can’t make them narrower t give you a better, closer, more intimate view.

2/ You can’t rearrange the order of the columns. You should be able to create a customized view that best suits each user. Plus the new columns are not in the same order as the old ones.

3/ The very comforting light yellow highlight background to denote changes that have taken place today is gone. I was used to using that yellow background to navigate the columns.

Fidelity has agreed that all three of these issues are legitimate and that they will fix them — BUT not any time soon.

So giving you a heads up.
