The New ‘Lanka Premier League’ (LPL) T20 Cricket Tournament Is So Futile & Meaningless.

by Anura Guruge

Yes, we have a well-earned reputation for ‘monkey see, monkey do‘. So, we HAD TO DO a ‘Premier League‘ whether it made sense, was needed or was going to be productive.

Oh, NO. ‘Monkey See, Monkey Do‘.

We have just finished the Indian IPL — the 1st & best of its kind. Others have tried, but the IPL remains preeminent.

We already have ENOUGH Franchise T20 leagues. There is only so much you can watch, only so much you can take.

This is TOO MUCH. Too much. STOP. STOP.

I for one am NOT watching. Why bother watching it when there is plenty of INTERNATIONAL cricket, SA v Eng & Aus v Ind.

The LPL is a STUPID IDEA. Let it die after this inaugural season.

I Stand By My Claim That “Hotstar” Is NOT For True Cricket Lovers!

by Anura Guruge

Pictures off my 47″ TV using my Google Pixel 2 phone.

OK, on Sunday (Day 2), I discovered that “Hotstar” live streams some of the IPL games, in full, and that there were full-length, versions of Match # 2 & Match #3. [Refer to images 1 & 2 above.]

But, NOT of Match #1. It says it is there, but all 10 hours of it is the IPL Auction! So, that is the bummer.

So, why am I still complaining?

Because, unless you watch ‘live’, which is not practical to most of us, you get SCREWED in terms of knowing the outcome of the match BEFORE you get around to watching it.

What fun is that in a T20?

So, here is the problem — and you can see it, clearly, in image 3 (above).

Before you can get to the replay you want, you are going to see ‘headlines’ like: “Ruthless Narine Slams 19-Ball 50“. So, now there is no suspense. You know Narine is NOT going to get out until he scores 50.

This is a bloody joke.

This IPL coverage is for those with ADHD and on drugs.

It is NOT serious cricket coverage. The cricket has been trivialized for the mobile phone set.

IF you are a genuine cricket fan like I, you will understand … you will appreciate.

This is NOT cricket!

This is GREAT news. Cricket, given the MILLIONS of Indians, Sri Lankans and Pakistanis now living in the U.S., not even mentioning the Brits and Aussies, has a HUGE — but low still low profile — following in the U.S. You can see multiple cricket games, being played with gusto, in any of the major U.S. cities from May to October. When we went to Philadelphia in May (to pick up the Jaguar XJ8) we saw at least 4 games in progress right in the heart of the city.

So this good. I am glad. I hear that the prices are quite high, $100+ at some venues and even higher. That is a shame. It is the kids that we need at these games.

Right now I get so much cricket that I cannot keep up! A real problem. I am TRYING to watch, even in just Highlight form, Australia v. New Zealand 1st Test, Pakistan v. England 3rd Test and Sri Lanka v. West Indies WOMEN ODIs. Given that I can only justify devoting about 80 minutes a day to cricket, I just can’t keep up. I am missing much of the India v. South Africa series. Yes, this is all on the Roku via Sling.

I will try and keep you posted on this. Not sure whether they will show this on ESPN.

Good News. The Pak v Zim 1st T20, ‘live’, is on Willow TV (on Sling TV for those of us that get it via a Roku).

The program guide titles are wrong!

Does NOT say “Zimbabwe“. That is a bummer.

Had to call Sling TV (in Toronto, Canada) to sort it out.

The T20 is at 9:30 am (EASTERN) on Friday, May 22, 2015. So the title is wrong, BUT the match is there.

OK?

Contact me or Sling TV if you are still having problems.

Fancy that.
I had no idea.
I just happened to catch a glimpse of it on ESPN cricinfo.com
when I was gathering material for my West Indies post.

I typically don’t try to follow cricket news because I do not
want to see (or hear) the scores since I am always WAY behind
in terms of watching the matches on TV.
So I avoid cricket other than on TV.

So here is some information.

The U.S. lost to Canada.
As I expected lots of Indian and British names —
I am surprised that there are no Sri Lankansin the U.S. team.

Ruvindu Gunasekera, the Canadian opener,
the TOP scorer of the match — with 51,
is, of course, from Sri Lanka. Classic name.

But the U.S. has won against Suriname & Bermuda.

bangladeshoditeam

Click to ENLARGE and savor. From ESPN cricinfo.com (with thanks).

I first started watching the Bangladeshi, in earnest and in interest, last Fall during their series against the West Indies. A few of their players, e.g., Mushfiqur Rahim, Mohammad Mahmudullah, Tamim Iqbal etc., caught my eye. You could see that they were awfully talented, very committed and loved the game. They reminded me of young West Indies players of yore. I followed them in the ICC 2015 World Cup — rooting for them to win their matches. They played with panache and that always appeals to me. I was glad they made the quarter-finals.

I just finished watching the 2nd Bangladesh v Pakistan ODI. That the two teams are playing, in Bangladesh no less, intrigues me. I am old enough to remember Bangladesh’s war of independence from Pakistan. [Oh, I also did not know until that match that Bangladesh (too) has a female prime minister — and she looks impressive (and very gentle).] I watched the first ODI too. Yes, I know that they won the series 3-0 though I have yet to watch the 3rd ODI or the T20. Bangladesh played beyond themselves. It was electric. Loved it. They sure came of age.

Yes, they still, like Sri Lanka in the early 1980s, need a bit more exposure and experience. But this series will give them heart and confidence. It was very gratifying to watch them. Another national team making the transition to a true Test stature team. Bravo. I am looking forward to watching all the remaining matches, including each day of the Test matches, on Willow TV (via my Roku 3). I have to confess that I have a surfeit of cricket on hand. Who would have thought that I would ever live, in the U.S., to say that. Yes, of course, I watched the highlights of all 10 days of the Two WI v. Eng. Tests. That the West Indies lost, so pathetically, did not please me. What a contrast. The Bangladeshi play like what the West Indies used to do 30 years ago. How the tide, something the Bangladeshis know very well, has turned.

So, today, I salute the Bangladesh cricket team. Keep up the good work.

I don’t normally watch any domestic cricket, from any country, preferring to get my daily fix from international games, ideally Tests and failing that ODIs.
But, until we get the DVR-like 30-day ‘Catch Up TV‘ feature on the Skybox TV, I have to watch what is being ‘broadcast’. Today TEN was focused on the Sri Lanka Super 4’s Twenty20. I had never even heard of it since I am not that partial to T20 — unless the West Indies are batting.

So I ended up seeing parts of two separate matches, both from the R. Premadasa Stadium (which I used to know as the Oval). In both cases the stadium was empty. I didn’t even spot a dog. I used to go to British county games, mid-week, in the 1970s (though I was supposed to be working at IBM). There wouldn’t be many folks around but there was certainly at least a 100 more for those games than I saw at the Premadasa. That is pretty bad, especially for a T20. Yes, I am sure Sri Lankans have had a surfeit of International cricket over the last few years and now, as opposed to when I was growing up (when Ceylon did not have TV), they can always watch it on the telly. It is kind of a shame. International players in an empty stadium. Some pretty decent cricket too. If nothing else, we can belt a cricket ball (better than most).

Premadasa moderately populated for what looks like an ODI. Today, in marked contrast, all these stands were empty and I mean not a soul in sight, not even a stray dog — never mind the proverbial ‘a man and a dog’.

In terms of cricket channels, right at this moment, there is no difference between Dish and DirecTV. Both are only offering Willow. I haven’t checked in the last 4 hours, but I suspect that Dish will probably give you Willow for $14.95. I cancelled my entire ‘Cricket Pack’ out of chagrin — thought they claim that they will still give me a $5/month discount in addition to the nice 3 month ‘bennie’ I got when I complained that NEO was not available.

Just want to make sure that none of you switch from one to another just in the hope of getting more cricket. Will not do you any good.

Yes, I am thinking of switching to DirecTV. I have been with Dish for 3 years. All my DVR equipment is old and I pay, even without the cricket, close to $100/month — and I don’t pay for any premium movie channels.

Kind of funny. Over the last 72 hours I have ‘chatted’ on line with DirecTV. Today, I get, through the mail, a special, ‘please sign up‘ offer. Yes, I am going to check it out.

The goal of this post however is just to give you all a heads up that down the road whether you are with Dish or DirecTV might be all moot if they merge.

TEN Cricket Is NOT Available On Direct TV Either! So Both Dish & Direct TV Now Only Offer Willow (For $14.99/Month).

WillowonDirect

I checked last night and called them up a few minutes ago.

Direct TV like DISH is now down to Willow — at $14.99/month.

That is diabolical.

Yes, I got confirmation. TEN is indeed Indian owned and Indian run. That explains it all. Right now, per their own Web site, TEN on TV is only available in India, Singapore, Hong Kong and UAE!

As promised last night (or more like early this morning), I did call up DISH to find out about what happened to my $19.99 ‘Cricket Pack’ that went from 3-channels to ONE — overnight.

As ever I got a very nice, very helpful rep. I find that DISH does have very responsive, very motivated reps. I like them and they seem to like me. That my bill with them, with the $19.99 ‘Cricket Pack’, is around $130/month probably has something to do with it.

The Rep checked his own in-house program details. Yes, his description of the ‘Cricket Pack’ said NEO and TEN Cricket. But, he also found an ‘e-mail’ broadcast to them that told them that TEN was history — at least for now. TEN Cricket supposedly pulled the signal yesterday — most likely without too much notice.

The Rep claimed that DISH was working with TEN to get the signal back.

Sounds like a contract dispute. I, of course, don’t know the details. I suspect the ‘Cricket Pack’ wasn’t as big a money spinner for DISH as they had hoped. It was mainly targeted at Indians living in the U.S. and Indians by nature are ‘close, very close, to their dollar‘. [That is a beautiful expression I learned from Weirs Beach marina owner, the elder Mr. Thurston, who also told me that he never takes his Rolex off his wrist because the change in temperature was the biggest bug bear to those temperamental (overrated) watches.] If they can watch some cricket for free on the Internet they would opt for that, any day of the week, than paying a ‘Rupee’ to watch it on a TV. Well, I am not Indian. Watching cricket on a computer does not hold any appeal for me, though I do have a 27″ HD monitor.

The Rep, after making some calls, gave me a 6 month discount. But, I cancelled the ‘Cricket Pack’ anyway. As I said in my earlier post I have 2 months worth of cricket already recorded and bloody Willow is not showing the ‘ICC Champions Trophy’. A pox on them all. But, I am still getting my 6 months discount. The Rep insisted! I told you, they like me.

I am sure both sides are to blame in this sorry mess.

I also established that I am well clear of any DISH contacts. Last night (and by that I mean 1 am this morning) I started checking out Direct TV. I already had one online chat with Direct TV. They, at least of now, carry TEN. The Champions Trophy is on TEN. Yes, I could have Direct TV by June 6. So watch this space.
