The Full Movie is on YouTube for $3.99

This is the Trailer.

Found this on our ‘Acorn TV‘ channel (on the Roku 3) yesterday. Looked promising and it had the potential of being another ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’. Well, it isn’t as funny — but I don’t think it ever tried to be that funny. The beauty of this movie is the dry wit; understated British humor, with a lot of subtle ‘nudge, nudge‘, ‘wink, wink‘. If you are into British humor you will know, at once, what I am talking about. It is an amusing yarn, slightly predictable — but that is part of the charm.

It is set mainly in Bristol. That was nostalgic for I. I have spent a LOT of time in Bristol in the 1970s. Kind of a second home. This film has one of the most exquisite images of the Clifton Suspension Bridge I have ever seen. I had to rewind it and watch it again, it was that exquisite.

If you like British humor you should watch this. Available on YouTube. Enjoy.

“The Good Karma Hospital”, ITV Series, Now On “Acorn TV”, Shot In Sri Lanka Though Set In Southern India!

It was one of the new shows available on ‘Acorn TV‘ (i.e., British shows) on the Roku. I was attracted to it just by its title — since it immediately brought to mind ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’. Well it is NOWHERE close to being that funny — BUT to be fair, it is not meant to be. It is more of a (somewhat obvious, predictable and stereotyped) romance-drama. It is OK. Teischan finds it ‘acceptable’ and I found it HOPING that she would like it. “Mrs. Hughes” from ‘Downton Abbey‘ made and appearance and that was a bonus.

Right from the start the scenery, especially the BEACHES, reminded me of CeylonSri Lanka — especially those around Galle that I was extremely conversant with during my 14-years there. But, having also been to India, multiple times, I knew that the southwest coast of Southern India was similar. The catamaran boats shown also reminded me of Sri Lanka ….

Then I checked IMDb.com. It was indeed shot in Sri Lanka! Wow. Now I will have to tell Teischan.

2000 movie about a Chocolate shop in France. Click for IMDB listing.

I will readily confess, what drew me to this movie, which I had never heard of before, was it ‘marigold’ poster which looked so much like that of ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ — a movie that we adored. I know that the sequel ‘Marigold Hotel II’ is out and I am keeping an eye for it on Amazon Prime Video. That is basically how I found this easy-to-enjoy, set in France, ‘Chocolat‘-with curry. As soon as we saw that it was meant to be an Indo-comedy — with Helen Mirren — we were sold. It was NOT (at least last week) included for free as Amazon Prime. We had to rent it. We watched the trailer, heard one of the Indian jokes, and decided that it was well worth the $6.

It was fun. Incongruous. A one-star Michelin restaurant where everybody insists on talking in English. It is, in the end, more of a heartwarming skill, talent and love will always prevail movie as opposed to a genuine comedy. Easy on the eye and you can literally smell the delicacies being concocted.

Definitely worth watching if you like European comedies starring Indians and with an Indian twist. We enjoyed it.

‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ (For The Elderly & Beautiful): A Must Watch Movie From Britain With Some Great Indian Talent & Humor.

We have only watched 1/2 of it, but it is beyond good.

It was another free, HBO preview weekend on DISH and I recorded a bunch of movies (space limitations on our already packed DVRs the only limitation). As soon as I saw the title, never mind the description, I knew I had to record it.

It is funny and poignant at the same time.

Lots of familiar (and famous) faces.

A bit bummed that the movie and review sites don’t give due credit to the Indian STARS. They are as good as the famous Brits.

Key among them is Dev Patel from Slumdog Millionaire‘. Deanna, to her credit, spotted him right away. I didn’t. All brown folks look the same to me (and Deanna even chastizes me that I can’t even tell blondes apart).

Great movie. If you haven’t seen it make a point of watching it.

[Street cricket scene. The wickets were too close together. And the strokes weren’t that great. But, that is movie license.]

Kind of funny, there was another ‘Indian’ movie with a similar name, i.e., ‘Marigold‘ a few years back. We saw that too. That was good too.
