‘FedEx’ ‘Tortoise & The Hare’ TV Commercial — You HAVE To Listen To The Song. Mesmerizing.

by Anura Guruge

YouTube below.

I typically do my utmost to ignore TV ads. I either skip over them, change channels or read something until they are over.

This morning, as is my daily wont, I was drinking my first cup of coffee, lying in bed, with the TV onto MSNBC/CNN and reading news on my 10″ ASUS pad at the same.

THEN I heard this song. It sends tingles through me. I was like “what the heck was that?

It was familiar and alien at the same time. I rewound the DVR to watch what it was.

It was a FedEx ad. Hhhmmm.

The song was not familiar but the immaculate guitar work and singing were mesmerizing. I listened to it a few times. Brilliant.

Really liked it.

Google to find out who the artist was. I failed! I thought it might be the British Johnny Flynn who did the soundtrack for the ‘The Detectorists‘. There are similarities in the guitar picking. I checked. I don’t think it is him.

I e-mailed the Ad company. They have not responded. So, IF you know who it is, PLEASE let me know.

In the meantime LISTEN to the song. You will THANK ME.

The Jack Williams theory.

“Black Books” On “Acorn TV”: Another Classic, Irreverent British Comedy Series.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access the “Acorn TV” page for this wildly hilarious comedy series.

Yes, there is a must watch trailer that will give you an idea as to what you are missing.

I have been subscribing to “Acorn TV” — streaming British TV — on our “Roku 3” for over a year.

It is, indubitably, the BEST $4/month I spend!

On Friday night we came across “Black Books” while looking for a ’30-minute’ program. Glad we found it.

It was very, very funny.

Quintessential, irreverent British comedy. Nobody else comes close.

Some similarities to “The Detectorists” which was also on Acorn.

We subscribe to “British TV on your Roku” Acorn TV. At $4/month it is a steal. A lot of good stuff in there, such as the new BBC comedy “The Detectorists“.

I saw “A Place to Call Home” in the Acorn catalog and thought that the kids — hooked on British period drama after “Downton Abbey” and “Mr. Selfridge” — might like it. I was right, as I tend to be when it comes to what the kids like to watch. They can’t wait till our ‘daily’ family TV ‘hour’ to watch this show. I am glad.

It is a good show. Well done. Compelling storyline — albeit with some adult themes. It is set in 1953 Australia and that was the year I was born. BUT, I remember that many of the customs and traditions portrayed are ones that we too had in Ceylon.

IF you can get it — watch it. Yes, of course, we are also watching “Indian Summers” & “Home Fires” on PBS. The kids like them both, the STEAMY scenes in the former (though NOT as graphic as in “A Place to Call Home”) having them intrigued, though I can tell that they prefer “Home Fires”! I don’t blame them. So do I. Something is not right with “Indian Summers”. It just does not engage with one as does the other shows. Home this helps.

Yes that it has a Yellow TR7 is a kick BUT I never, ever liked hardtop TR7s.
The TR7 was meant to topless.

Here is the IMDB.com listing for this show — “The Detectorists”.

It suddenly dawned on me that is THE MUSIC,
amazingly rich guitar picking by
Johnny Flynn
that made this show even more special.

This was a featured new series on ‘Acorn‘ — BBC shows streamed — that I subscribe to on our Roku 3, mainly so that the kids can have access to the British shows that they have of late become so enamoured with.

I have never owned a metal detector but know quite a few that do and I will confess it holds appeal to me — though I know I really don’t have the time for it. But, I decided to watch it, one night, mainly as there was no new cricket that caught my interest. I watched the first episode. It was quintessential BBC comedy. As such it was soothing and easy to just sit back and absorb. The 20 minutes went quite fast. The next day, forgoing cricket again, I watched episode 2. That was even better. I was hooked. Then I realized that the music had MUCH to do with it. It was iconic British folk, with magical guitar picking. You don’t realize it at first but that music draws you right in. I am going to check out Johnny Flynn.

Well, I thought YOU might be interested. Have a look and a listen. I am sure YOU will like it. Enjoy.
