He was the 112th legitimate pope. But, it was a long time ago. He was the FIRST Cardinal Bishop to be elected Pope. Benedict XVI was the last.

Formosus, which is assumed to be an assumed name, means ‘beautiful’ in Latin!

Formosus, who was pope for but 4.5 years, is best known for his role, posthumously, in the ‘Cadaver Synod‘.

Errors In ‘The Next Pope’ by Peter Hebblethwaite.

‘The Next Pope’ by Peter Hebblethwaite

(revised and edited by Margaret Hebblethwaite)
 ISBN: 0-06-063777-3, 2000

Page 4: “Moreover, conclaves did not happen in the Sistine Chapel until after the collapse of the Papal States in 1870.”

Ah! I have tried to parse that statements all which ways until Christmas to see if I was missing something here. But, I am sure it says what it says!

Yes, the 1846, 1831, 1829 & 1823 conclaves were held at the Quirinal Palace and the 1800 conclave in Venice.  But the prior 38 conclaves, going back to 1484, were centered around the Sistine. During the first twelve of these, 1484 to 1559, all the cardinals were even billeted inside the Sistine. Thus, in my opinion, that statement is dead wrong.

Page 27: “In the first millennium, popes did not emerge from the college of cardinals, since the cardinals in the modern sense did not exist.”

Ah! Well YOU could play games with the caveat ‘modern sense,’ and say that the ‘College’ didn’t come to be until 1148-1150. But even with that, the spirit of this sentence is SO WRONG. Let us just refer to the 769 Roman Synod convened by Stephen III (IV) and its stipulation that popes must be elected from among cardinal priests and cardinal deacons.

Page 165: “… William Wakefield Baum …, he is the only U.S. cardinal to have ever voted in a conclave — in fact two — having become a cardinal in 1976.”

That ‘ever’ in front of ‘voted’ makes this statement false as it stands. If the caveat ‘living’ is added after the ‘only’ this would work (given that this book was published in 2000). The way it reads is misleading and wrong. James Gibbons voted in the 1903 conclave. John Murphy Farley voted in the 1914 conclave etc. Eight US cardinals participated in the August 1978 conclave and nine in the October 1978 conclave. This should have been caught by an editor. But maybe this book was not edited. That would explain all these fundamental errors.

Page 139: “And after all, the pope lives in Italy …”

This is is post-1929. The pope lives in the sovereign city-state of Vatican City — with even Castel Gandolfo falling within the extraterritorial bounds of the Vatican City. This was obviously meant to be a ‘cute’ statement, but it is inappropriate, misleading and worst of all, wrong.

Page 57: Talking about the voting process says “… the whole process is repeated …”

Not so. The second ballot of each morning and afternoon session is different from the first. For a start there is no need to elect new Scrutineers, Infirmarii and Revisers, or to take a new oath.

Page 32: There is a poem here by the Polish poet Juliusz Slowacki, prefaced by a claim that it forecasts that there would be a Slavic pope [i.e., John Paul II] in the 20th century.

I think it is more than a stretch to make that claim. It sure says, in the first line “… will not — Italian-like — take fright.” Yes, the poet was Polish. But that doesn’t mean that any non-Italian has to be Slavic. This one is not as grave as the prior two, but it still gave me pause.

Sri Lanka Featured In “The Young Pope” Episode 4 — With Prominence For Sri Lankan Actress Nadee Kammellaweera.

Sri Lankan Nadee Kammellaweeraas Sister Suree.

Starting with the first episode of “The Young Pope” there has been this diminutive, very dark, young sister, in glasses that has served as the Pope’s maid — telling him it is time for his snack etc. During the first three episodes her role was fleeting and extremely brief.

Then came Episode 4. Wow. The pope sees her crying. She tells the pope that her sister, in Sri Lanka, is dying. “Sri Lanka” clearly enunciated. The pope even says it: “Sri Lanka”. Not once. But a few times! Wow. I haven’t seen Sri Lanka mentioned on HBO that many times — ever.

Yes, it was NOT all positive.

She says she doesn’t like to go to Sri Lanka because going there makes her DOUBT God! That is a nasty dig. Wow.

Well the pope doesn’t allow her to go to Sri Lanka. Instead he has her sister’s body sent over in a container ship! Ah! Not by plane. Well, that was a bit close to home. In 1992 I accompanied my adoptive mother’s body from Paris to Sri Lanka on a AirLanka plane. Yes, it is true that we did get a Presidential dispensation to do that. But, I am sure, now that the Civil War is over, that there are no restrictions to bodies being transported by air. Anywho.

I had NO idea that she was Sri Lankan. Just assumed that she was South Indian. Her makeup makes her quite dark.

But this was publicity for Sri Lanka — and all publicity is good publicity.

But, I KNOW that 99% of those in the U.S. watching that show would have NO IDEA what or where “Sri Lanka” is! That is a sad fact. It might as well be an obscure asteroid.

Yes, as is to be expected from a dramatization like this, there are a LOT of liberties taken when it comes to facts, depictions and settings.

Some are inevitable and you can live with them.

Others are just to egregious especially when certain plots revolve around them.

One such BIGGIE was in Episode 3. In that, the RESIGNATION of Cardinal Voiello, the supposed Secretary of State, figures large.

But, the Young Pope never RE-CONFIRMED Voiello as the Secretary of State — or for that matter ANY OTHER Cardinal Prefect heading up a curial ‘department’ (a so called dicastery).

All of these, as you can see from above, are AUTOMATICALLY relieved of their office and title. They have to be RE-APPOINTED by the new pope. That never happened.

So, a lot of what has gone on is fairy tales.

I am not that thrilled with this series. It is, alas, not very good.

Now that the pope’s very personal correspondence with Polish Anna Teresa Tymieniecka, which began 3-years ahead of him becoming pope, has been made very public by the PBS special it becomes clearer as to why the pope was very explicit that he wanted his ‘personal notes’ — i.e., personal correspondence included — burned upon his death.

As you can see from the excerpt in my book, “The Next Pope — 2011“, this was never done. The pope would not be pleased, though to be fair PBS has yet to find anything truly incriminating.

Just happened to see this, this morning — since I do not check Amazon U.K. listings of my books that often.

As I said previously this is why I write books — because I do NOT make any money from them. Purely a hobby.

I think every author, who has written more than one book, knows deep down which of those books is the best one he has written.

Anura Guruge SNA Theory and Practice book at AmazonFor the longest time I knew that my first book, written in 1983 (and published in 1984), “SNA: Theory and Practice” was the best book I had written.

Writing that book was magical. I was 30 years old and my semi-photographic memory was at its peak. I wrote that book, which is very technical,
basically from memory and definitely indexed it from memory. I did not use a computer. I wrote it longhand by pencil. It is 550 page book!

But, I now know that “The Next Pope: 2011” is now my Magnum opus. It is THE book that I want to be remembered for.
Looking back I can’t actually believe that I wrote it. I amazed myself. The research that I did for that book was
beyond painstaking and extensive. Four years later I think back and go: ‘Wow, I did all that?

It is an amazing feeling.

Click to ENLARGE. Yes, Bergoglio WAS on my published ‘top 10’ list in ‘The Next Pope 2011’, page 4. That is indisputable.

So, lets go through what I did get right:

1/ I did list Jorge Mario Bergoglio as one of my ‘top 10’, though he was my last. But, better than those that did not have him at all in their lists. Proof: pages 4 & 29 of ‘The Book‘.

2/ I said on December 6, 2010, I said: “The Next Pope Is Also Likely To Be Over 75”. Proof: this post & page 7 of ‘The Book‘.

3/ On April 20, 2010, I said: “The Next Pope: Non-European, Non-Curial With ‘Clean Hands”. Proof: this post & page 11 of ‘The Book‘.

4/ I adamantly maintained that the next pope will not be from Africa, Asia or the U.S.A. Proof: this ‘pigs will fly’ post at a minimum & page 12 of ‘The Book‘.

5/ I was beyond categorical that the next pope will not be ‘Peter anything‘. Proof: this post as a start & page 221 of ‘The Book‘.

6/ I did foresee that the new pope might assume a brand new name. Proof: page 226 of ‘The Book‘.

Find me anybody else who got as much right … in published, verifiable form.

I Have A Pope Interview Published In Slovenia.

…..

This was a neat interview. The interviewer spoke perfect English (much better that I do). He also asked some of the most incisive questions, about the papal transition, that I have been asked in the last 3 weeks. He was good. I was impressed. So, impressed that I invited him over – since he had never been to the U.S. and as do so many, wants, desperately, to visit.
