November 2014 — wearing a Canadian Red Poppy, in my ‘study’

I, per what was my custom when I lived in Britain, start wearing a Red Poppy, with pride, towards the end of October. So today I got out my box of Red Poppy Pins.

I lucked out last year. My Sri Lankan friend, living in Canada, Kenny, sent me 6 Canadian Red Poppies when I told him how upset I was that I had lost the prior two that had been sent to me from Canada. Thanks again Kenny.

I hadn’t bought any lapel pens on eBay this year! I haven’t looked much and what I saw didn’t appeal to me. Plus I did get the rather expensive — and very special — Paul Cummins’Tower of London” ceramic Red Poppy.

But I did buy 6 lady’s brooches, 5 of which are shown in the bottom image, from China via eBay. With shipping it came to $8.94. Less than $1.50 a brooch! How could I resist. No, they are not for me per se, though I put one in my box for posterity. I got three for Deanna and the girls. The other two, or even the one in the box, will be for local ladies who are willing to follow my lead in wearing a Red Poppy for Remembrance Day.

So, I am all set. I think I will start tomorrow with one of my favorites. The ‘Winston Churchill‘ pin (top right on top picture).

MY MAN, Churchill, waving to the crowds in London with them ROARING back “It was YOUR victory” once he had told them that “It was YOUR victory”. THEY knew who had won the WAR for whom.

It is good that Google remembered
BUT how can THEY get it so, so wrong!

VE day, Victory Europe, was NOT, I repeat NOT,
the end of World War II.
The bloody Japanese still had to be subdued!
There was a bomb involved. Doesn’t Google know U.S. history?

I wanted it somewhere where it was both safe and where I could see it, everyday.

The obvious solution was that it had to be close to my PC monitors. And that is where it ended up. It is just to the right of my main (right-side) monitor. It is always there to my right. More or less at eye level. I ‘mounted’ it in a heavily weighted glass vase. The ceramic poppy is not only heavy but it is top heavy. I put Devanee’s Lego ‘Big Ben’ behind it to add some ambiance. Matthews old pewter ‘knights’ were already there and they kind of give it some pizazz.

It is kind of funny. 9-year old Teischan likes the poppy. When she is up here she will come over and look at it. She sometimes touches it. I am glad. That is good.

Well that is all good news. I am happy.

Click here to go to the ‘6 charities’ referred to in the notice.

OK. Given my wont and bent I did some sums. The poppies were £25 each (without shipping and handling).

So 888,246 poppies should have generated £22.2 Million. [At the current £1 = $1.46 that is $32.4 million. Not shabby at all, at all.]

[There are saying that they only sold 860,000. That would have generated £21.5 Million. I can believe that 28,246 were given to folks, got damaged etc.]

So at £1.2 Million per charity they have distributed £7.2 Million. That is 32.4%.

OK. Yes, there were costs. I assume Paul Cummins got a cut too. But, 32.4%. Hhhmmm.

Yes, they say that more might be distributed. I hope so.

Am I the ONLY one who has done the sums. I would have liked to see the number closer to 50%.

I just checked eBay. True to the policy they instituted, there are NO ceramic poppies per for sale. Just a lot of expensive artwork and posters.

I have mixed feelings about this. How long will they keep the policy in place. What happens IF my kids want to sell my poppy 10 years from now. I think it would be good to have a 1 year moratorium. Then it should be a free market.

I checked the Web as a whole. Couldn’t find any so to speak. So, GOOD JOB.

It was definitely worth waiting for. I am delighted and so is Deanna.

It was supposed to have been my birthday present, and my birthday was in September. Deanna ordered it in August 2014.

But I was happy to wait. When we ordered it we had no idea as to the logistics. We didn’t appreciate that it would be one of the 888,246 that was actually planted at the Tower of London. That makes it special and the documentation that comes with the poppy, which includes an holographic authenticated certificate to say that it is one of the genuine Paul Cummins poppies that was planted at the Tower, stresses that. Moreover, as you can see from the last two pictures, it contains soil residue from the moat. Very cool. I feel honored.

Friday, March 27, 2015, as such proved to be quite the day. Got WordAds for this blog which was quite an achievement. Then the poppy arrived. To cap it all we went to see Teischan at the Alton, Prospect Mountain High School production of the “Wizard of Oz” — and that was wonderful. We even went out for a quick bite. So a good day.
