NO Wolfeboro, N.H. ‘First Night’ For 2017 (i.e., December 31, 2016) — OFFICIAL.

It is OFFICIAL. I called up and checked with the “Wolfeboro Area Chamber of Commerce“.

Wolfeboro First Night“, which was so much a part of the Lakes Region scene, for 20-years is NO MORE — and has NOT been since 2014. Shame. Pity.

Yes, there will be town-sponsored fireworks, on the ‘docks’, at 6:30pm (which is WAY, WAY, WAY, WAY, WAY too early)!

Some Town Officials are hoping to do ‘something’ in the “Great Hall” of the “Town Hall” building. Details to follow.

Last year the “Wolfeboro Inn” did a ‘gala’. Not so this year.

Shame. A pity. We used to love First Night at Wolfeboro. Will have to make other plans. {SMILE}.

Ahead Of February 4 Sri Lanka Independence Day Let Me Share Some Real Old Pictures.

by Anura Guruge

These are Public Domain pictures.

[So don’t even THINK about putting copyright notices on them.]

I can, from my time in Ceylon 1953 to 1967, relate to ALL these pictures. I remember Colombo jetty when it was like that I have gone out on launches from that jetty many times to visit ships in the harbour. The Town Hall hasn’t changed any and Galle Face, at least the front, is just as I remember from my time. Peradeniya is much the same. So these are COOL. Not postcards per se. Cigarette Cards — which they used to include in packets. I have found about 240 of these.

It, for a nice change, was ‘warm‘, maybe around 40°F. Wow. It was barmy. You didn’t need gloves and you didn’t have to stamp your feet. No snow. We have yet to have any snow this winter. I think that that is atypical. Deanna wanted to go on the (truck-pulled) hay ride. So we got there early, before 6pm. We were surprised. There was hardly anybody there. We thought that it was because it was a tad early. We were wrong.

Less than 100 people at the Christmas tree lighting at 6:30! Maybe around 60. That is crazy. We have seen more people when it was cold. I actually think that that was the reason. It wasn’t cold enough. Trust me. After 30 years in New Hampshire I know how they think. They are going to say that it wasn’t cold enough to feel like Christmas.

P1020962The caroling, as ever, was enthusiastic with well chosen pieces. I always enjoyed that.

The ‘Alton Historical Society‘, as is their wont, had an ‘open house’ at their ‘J. Jones & Son’ freight building behind the Town Hall. We checked that out. We always tour it if it is open. It is always rewarding. I will do a separate post on that. That was good. As was the huge cookies and very hot chocolate at the Town Hall. We went to Chinese afterwards.

Merry Christmas.

Car Cheer06112015

I have already said GOOD things about Dave Gitman of ‘Car Cheer’, in Trevose (outside of Philadelphia), who sells lots of cars on eBay under the name “European-Cars”.

We got our Jag XJ8 from Dave via eBay.

Well I had it inspected for its N.H. Inspection Sticker (by “B-Boys” of Barnstead, NH) yesterday and had it registered, in NH, at the Alton Town Office on Monday.

In both instances everything went well without a hitch and that is why I felt compelled to say MORE good things about Dave and his operation.

The paperwork that Dave supplied (albeit for a small charge) was immaculate. The NH registration was completed without a single query or ‘do you have this‘. I liked that. So, paperwork, as he said it would be, was PERFECT. He has a wonderful, very proficient, assistant and she did us all proud. [Thank you.]

The car sailed through the inspection. Found nothing wrong. Paul Bousquet even went onto say that everything underneath was in excellent shape! His only concern was that I might have a problem opening the driver’s door from the inside. I had to laugh. The first time I was in the car I too thought that I was stuck and that the driver’s door would not open. I shouted at Dave. He laughed. It works FINE — the handle needs to be pressed harder than you would expect. Now that I am used to it I don’t think twice about it. Door opens fine. So that was the ONLY ‘problem’ that Paul found. I am delighted.

So credit where credit is due.

I can ONLY talk about my transaction and Dave did GOOD.

So, I will wholeheartedly recommend Dave, “Car Cheer” and “European-Cars”.

Yes, of course, being the professional cynic that I am I was skeptical and somewhat concerned buying a car, over the Internet. But, Dave showed me that it can be done and it can be done with great success.

Alton Town, By Letter, Requests Central School (ACS) To Adopt A Plan To Remedy Odours From The 1st Grade Class Room Sinks.

This letter, dated April 1, 2013 (though I really hope it was NOT an April Fool’s joke by the town), was read, without too much elaboration, at last night’s School Board meeting. Since I didn’t get to see the letter and I was not taking any notes I might have got some of the nuances wrong, but the gist of it, as I could see it, was that the Town, at last, was asking the school to look into the issues of the malodorous sinks in the classroom.

As with the ‘seating configuration‘, I know very well that this had nothing to do with me (and after 21 years of writing public opinion pieces I know the adage: ‘like a rooster claiming that it is his daily crowing that makes the Sun rise‘ only too well).

But, seems strange that just last Friday, March 29, 2013, I happened to speak to a Town official on exactly this matter and even spelled out how they used a piece of wood over the sink. Now, as is my wont, I might have, inadvertently, used my ‘code words’.

Bottom line is that I am delighted. Teischan who was also at the meeting was even more delighted.

Amazing how these things happen. We just started trying to get to the bottom of this ACS air quality issue — as I posted yesterday (where I did mention that I had been talking to people in Concord and the Town Hall).

Suddenly we have all these documents in front of me — and I THANK all those that scrambled to get them to us within ‘hours’.

I have Air Quality reports from 2010 and 2012 PLUS a NH Department of LaborSafety Inspection Report‘ for the SAU and ACS that was conducted this year, February 26, 2013.

Plus there is the second School Board meeting this coming Monday, April 8, 2013 where I gather some of these concerns will get aired.
