This post was about trying to stop the wanton WASTAGE of Helium realizing its shortage. Click to access post.

The worldwide Helium shortage is real. We really are running short of Helium.

Though the 2nd most abundant element in the known Universe (~24%) we only have finite quantities on earth — and it is expensive to extract. When we have used up what was there on Earth we are stuck. We haven’t worked out how to import Helium from outside of Earth. That is the problem.

We are running out of Helium — at least Helium we can readily obtain on Earth.

That is why prices are going up. Soon it will be too cost prohibitive to use Helium in party balloons. So, simple economics will prevent our wanton waste of Helium in balloons. We nee Helium for more serious things — including MRIs and scientific research.

But, don’t wait for price to force you from buying Helium balloons. Make the decision yourself. Please stop buying Helium balloons — as of RIGHT NOW. Thank you.

“Peripheral Neuropathy Due To Chemotherapy” — Patrice Bourgeois, My Former Workmate, Finds Out.

Peripheral neuropathy — and with that possibly Central Pain Syndrome (CPS) — can be a not-widely-disclosed side effect of chemotherapy.

Patrice, my former colleague at CASE Communications, is finding this out the hard way, to her cost and chagrin. This is not good. CPS, as you may know, is debilitating and has no cure.

Not sure what can be done about this. It is not like you can refuse chemotherapy if you have cancer. It appears that certain chemotherapy drugs affect the nervous system and once anything messes up the nervous system you run the risk of getting CPS. That is, alas, well known — at least of late.

Here is another post, this one by the ‘Canadian Cancer Society‘:

Short-Sleeved Cricket Sweater Knitted For Me By My Former Workmate Patrice Bourgeois During Her Cancer Treatment.

by Anura Guruge

Earlier this year as Patrice was getting ready for her ‘3-months’ of cancer treatment she did a Facebook post asking if anybody wanted anything knitted since she had run out of ‘projects’ and ‘ideas’ and she wanted to have something to knit in the coming months.

I told her that I did not have any cricket sweaters that fitted and would love one in my ol’ Ananda College (Colombo, Sri Lanka) colors of maroon and gold. Patrice went to work, as she is wont, researching patterns, colors, wool types, needles etc. etc.

Over the months she gave all of us pithy updates on the progress of this sweater. It took her slightly longer than she had expected. But, it was always going to be for Fall 2017 in New Hampshire.

It arrived today — in the nick of time. The temperature is 58°F as I write this post.

It fits beautifully and all she requested from me was a measurement of my chest size.

I am impressed, amazed and very grateful.

Thank YOU, Patrice.

I will wear this with pride and joy in the months to come. She informed me that it is washable. That is good. I do spill stuff.

So more pictures to come.

Journey Through Bladder Cancer Treatment By My Former Colleague Patrice Bourgeois Leeds.

Patrice Bourgeois Leeds cancer blog radiation bladder

Click image to access WordPress blog by Patrice Bourgeois Leeds about her journey through cancer treatment.

Patrice and I worked at CASE Communications, in Columbia, Maryland, 31-year ago. Her Dad worked for CASE too — and I worked with him for over a year before Patrice joined the crew. Her Dad, about the same age as my Adoptive Father, was my first mentor in the U.S. and a very good and dependable friend. He and I, I from the Britain and he from the U.S., were part of the original CASE U.S.A management team — CASE, a market-leading U.K. company having bought the U.S. Rixon Corporation to get a foothold in the U.S. Patrice was the Product Manager for Multiplexers. I was the Director of Marketing for Multiplexers. So she controlled my destiny. Her Dad was the Directing Marketing for Distributor Sales. He helped me sell through the ‘channels’ as we called it. So these two, daughter and dad, played a huge hand in my fortunes and income. They never let me down. A rarity at CASE.

I had lost touch with Patrice over the years, and alas Dad is no longer with us.

Just over a year ago, the unexpected death of two of our other colleagues, Don & Sandy Pyle, in that famous Christmas-tree fire of a multi-million dollar mansion, brought a few of us together — over social media.

I only found out that Patrice had cancer around Christmas. She kept it to herself until she decided she was not going to have the surgery.

She had asked me about doing a blog and I urged her to do so — and, of course, suggested WordPress.

So, we now have a blog.

I am a great believer that stories like this HAVE to be told. It is good for all. Therapeutic to write and inspirational to others. Plus, Patrice can write — and write well.

Patrice has to get better and not get too tired during the treatment because I have twisted her arm to proof my books. She is good with anything to do with words.

So, bookmark her blog. Wish her well. And follow her on her journey.

Do NOT Get A Home Inflate Helium Latex Balloon Kit Without ‘Hi-Float’ Balloon Treatment.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. Kits do NOT include ‘Hi-Float’. Repeat. Do NOT include ‘Hi-Float’. Buy it separately. Otherwise a total waste of money and PRECIOUS Helium.

A ‘High-Float’ product page from Amazon. About the BEST price and it is Prime. Click to access.

Teischan had a Pre-Birthday party and sleepover Friday/Saturday — her birthday being this coming week. She wanted lots of balloons and so Deanna bought one of those Home Inflate kits, at Walmart, when she went shopping for the party supplies. We had bought one quite a few years ago and it had been quite a hit. At around $40 Deanna figured that it was a bargain given the 50 balloons included — at 80 cents a balloon.

These balloons, as it CLEARLY states on the box, lasted around 8 hours.

They pathetically deflated after that. And it says that on the box. Very clearly and both Teischan and Deanna had seen it.

This confused and UPSET me. I had discovered to my horror, 4 years ago, that the World was running out of Helium!

So it bad enough that we are using precious Helium for party tricks BUT WORSE that we lose that Helium within 1/3 of a day!

I knew something was not right. Latex balloons you buy at supermarkets etc. last 3 to 4 days, if not longer (and yes, Mylar balloons lasts even longer).

So, as ever, I Googled.

That is when I discovered ‘Hi-Float‘. Now it ALL makes sense. The latex balloons have to be sealed.

Got it? Just trying to make sure that we all get more for our money and the best out of the Helium we have. (Yes, I know it is the 2nd most abundant element in the Universe BUT we haven’t yet figured out how to extract Helium from outer space).
