The Sad Tale Of A Tall Tree — Standing Rampant One Day, Felled For Firewood The Next.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. What a bunch of dotards.

This grove of trees, on an unused building lot, is just down the road from I — on one of the two roads I can take to leave our house. So, I don’t go by there everyday, but do tend to pass it a few times a week. [Yes, the other road is the ‘main’ one.]

When on foot I invariably stop to admire these trees, They are so tall, straight & standing proud.

This week I saw three trucks on that lot. I knew it wasn’t a good sign. I was right. They cut down the main tree. True, it appears to have lost its top part over the winter. But, STILL it is a shame. But, I guess trees are to be sacrificed. Expendable. Renewable. Right? That is the justification.

Christmas 2020 At The Guruge Household.

Just a snapshot. A collage. NOT COMPREHENSIVE. Much more, BUT I haven’t got around to capturing it all.

Yes, we still have 3 Christmas trees, BUT for the first time in 14-years ONLY one is real. Two fake! Yikes. NOT my decision. But, someone — & we will not name names — wanted a PINK Christmas tree. Hard to find a real Christmas tree that is pink. SMILE.

The 2019 Chocolate Advent Calendar #1 Is Done, Dusted & Was In The Trash!

I guess Christmas must be around the corner. I found this in the trash — unceremoniously thrown away, crushed and all. Guess it is DONE. All 24 chocolates consumed.

The other two 2019 Advent Calendars fare better in that they are not edible.

She will put away the 2019 Lego calendar with care to add to the 5 sets from prior years. Then she will bring it out next year — and I have already been told that she wants a Lego 2020 Advent calendar. I will keep you posted.

Merry Christmas.

Somebody Already Setup & Ready For Advent 2019 — Hours Ahead Of December.

Advent 2019 Guruge household

There are 5 Lego Advent calendars here — 4 set-up and the 5th, which was tree decorations, already hung on the tree. This represents the last 5 years worth of Lego advent calendars. At 13 I thought, mistakenly, that she wouldn’t want a Lego and instead would want an ‘adult’ one (e.g., jewelry).

I was WRONG. I was told off in no uncertain terms. She claims she is not too old. So, of course, I got her one. And an jewelry one — and a chocolate one. Actually two, one for the 19-year old too. She doesn’t do Advent!

The First 2019 Christmas Trees In Place (Partially Lit) — 8 Days Earlier Than Last Year; Two More To Go.

by Anura Guruge

She has an even SMALLER one on her desk.

Teischan (12), unashamedly, lives for Christmas — and has for most of her life, once she worked out what it was all about.

She starts talking about Christmas in September!

When she was younger we could dictate as to when preparations for Christmas would come. But, starting last year she has taken matters into her own hands. When she was little we waited until at least the first week of December before we started.

For the last couple of years she can do it ALL without help. She can — and will — put out all the lights by herself.

She knows where HER artificial tree is stored and can go get it and set it up by herself.

Last year she set it up on November 17. The previous year it was November 27. At this rate she will have her tree up in October of next year!

She still has to wait for us to get the real trees. But, she will start nagging soon.

My Walk In The Woods, In Alton, New Hampshire — Yesterday, July 7, 2019.

by Anura Guruge

This property is 1.6 miles from home. It belongs to some friends, an elderly couple. They have a lot of acreage, with two large ponds — one manmade (by them) — lots of elevation and views to kill. They let me and the dogs walk their property and for the dogs to swim in their ponds. This was the second time I have hiked this property this year — the last time was in May.

This time I had another mission, other than enjoying the views and getting my mileage — I was checking for blueberries (that grow wild) and their apple trees. Yes, some of the detours and loopbacks were just to get mileage. It was fun. Must do it again.

Pretty sure that GPS is wrong. GPS does not like you doubling back on yourself!

This was 1.6 miles from home. Property belonging to some friends. They have a lot of acreage, with two large ponds — one manmade (by them) — lots of elevation and views to kill. This was the most I have walked on their property. They were around and I did get permission.

Yes, I was trying to get mileage. Pretty sure that GPS was wrong. First the trees and the other that I was doubling back on myself. So, after awhile I decided just to hike for 1 hour — screw the GPS distance. It was a true hike. Wasn’t easy. I am still wearing a locked brace and using a stick!

But, it was fun. The dogs went with I. It was very rewarding. Amazing views and sites. Saw a HUGE pile of moose poop.

I think it will just about clear the tree line. This is just after 6am. Sunrise is not until ~7:15am. So, plenty of time.

Not for I. I will still be in bed. But, wanted to make sure that you early risers knew of this. Enjoy. Let me know what it was like.

All 3 2018 Christmas Trees Are In Place — 2 Yet To Be Decorated.

by Anura Guruge

Teischan (12), as I may have mentioned more than once, lives, unashamedly, for Christmas — and has for most of her life, once she worked out what it was all about.

She starts talking about Christmas in September and it was no different this year though she is a year older! She started nagging me about getting the Christmas trees at Thanksgiving. I kept on saying: “in December, in December“.

We bought our Christmas trees locally in Alton last year. They were not doing trees this year. Then earlier this week, driving through Rochester we saw a sign that said that the boy scout troop will be selling Christmas trees, for $35/each, on Saturday, December 8, 2018 (and for that matter the Sunday also). Seemed like a good cause and the price was not bad. So, I agreed that today would be the day for the trees. Looking back I realize that we are 3 days behind what we were last year. No wonder she has been complaining.

Got the trees from the Scouts. Good deal. Lots of adults to help and they insisted on doing everything. For the first time ever I didn’t have to do anything. They put it on the roof and even tied it down. I was impressed. Going back to them next year, though Teischan, a connoisseur of Christmas trees, is not too happy with the two we got today. She does have a point. They both have a bald spot close to the top. Not too serious. But she noticed.

Anywho, all three trees are now up. They will decorate and put up the lights tomorrow.

The Advent Is Here — Lego “Friends” 2018 Calendar.

by Anura Guruge

Yes, I did get the LegoFriends” 2018 Advent Calendar. It would have been a shame to break what had been a 4-year tradition. I did not give it to her till this morning. She was surprised. She had assumed she would not be getting one this year as she was too old. Well, that was a treat. But, I have warned her that this could be IT. The box clearly says ‘6 – 12’ and she will be 13 next Advent.

Different to the other Lego calendars. No scene to set up. Each gift is a Christmas ornament for a tree. See last image. It was a red heart that you have to assemble. So, each day a new ornament to make. She likes it. LUCKILY her personal Christmas tree was up. So, that was perfect. They could go straight up on that.

So that is what the 2018 Lego Advent Calendar looks like.
