It was BOTH fun & productive. So glad we went & pitched in. I think this was our 5th time. We ‘specialize’ in cleaning the three trolleys — inside & out. Today, I even started scraping off some peeling varnish from one of the trolleys. My plan is to go back & give it a new coat of good marine varnish.

According to the ‘Thank You’ e-mail from Lynne this is what we all got done today. I am glad.

We got a huge amount done and I think this makes us that much closer for opening May 29th.  Here’s what we accomplished today!

  • Much raking around the main parking lot, walkway to the Carriage House, and large picnic area in front of the gift shop.  This makes it look cleaner and welcoming to guests – with our first guests coming tonight to our first wedding of the season.
  • All trolleys were cleaned from top to bottom, outside and in!  This too really enhances the appeal to the wedding guests tonight!
  • Additional garden clean up and primping by some of the gardeners at gardens by the Carriage House and Gift shop.  Beautiful flowers and plants blooming!
  • Planted the window box at Maple Lodge by another gardener – thanks Gretchen!
  • Painted the lower guard rail in the main parking lot (volunteers had painted  the upper guard rail the year before so this really looks nice now!)
  • Painted the benches on the sun porch up at Lucknow Mansion to welcome all tour guests.

The weather could not have been more perfect. WOW. First really warm day of 2021. We lucked out. Well, I try not to wait just for the Volunteer Days. I went in a few extra days last year. Hopefully I can do the same this year as well.

SUPPORT ‘The Castle’. It is a New Hampshire TREASURE. Wonderful place to be around. Volunteer. Nice bunch of folks — bar I. But you can avoid me. SMILE.

Washing the red trolley.

Painting the back wall of the Cafe.

Before & After.

Done. It matches.

Painted the counter too since it was peeling.

We have been volunteering at the ‘Spring Cleanup‘ for the last two years. This was our 3rd year — at least for Teischan & I. We have also done the ‘Fall Cleanup’.

Cleaning the trolleys have become our speciality. This was our 3rd year doing so. There was only two this year. We have done all three in prior years. This year we had to fisrt remove Christmas decorations from December. It is all fun.

Then I agreed to pain the back wall of the ‘Cafe’. I had NO idea what I was volunteering for — & was definitely not dressed for painting. But, c’est la vie. It was a beautiful day & I am used to going topless. Yes, the wall needs another coat of paint. We, however, had run out of both paint & time. But, it will do for now.

The Castle is opening on July 1, 2020. It is looking good.

We will make a few visits between now & Christmas.

Definitely worth visiting. Enjoy.

‘Castle In The Clouds’ [NH], Spring Clean Up Day — May 18, 2019.

As we had done last year, we were there for the ‘Spring Cleanup‘ this year too — except this time it was just Teischan (13) & I. Given our ‘success’ cleaning the trolleys last year we volunteered to do that again this year. And again another change. Last year they had two trolleys out. This year just one. The other two were being fixed. Plus, they needed to use the trolley latre that morning to ferry some new employees up the Castle for orientation. So, we only had an hour — maybe an hour and a half at best. We did our best. They wanted us to concentrate on the inside.

Amazing how dirty it gets. I spent a fair amount of time on the brass. Got some of it gleaming.

Beautiful day! The sun was out, in glory, and it was borderline hot. Great day to work outside. Having lunch on the terrace was even better. It was a privilege.

We had fun. Great people and a worthy cause — and you can’t beat the setting.

They have a new — very nice and knowledgeable ‘Director of Buildings & Grounds — Al Sochard. He was very kind and helpful.

A good day was had by all — methinks.

Judging by those that stayed for lunch we didn’t have as many people as last year. But hard to tell. Some left before lunch.

Weather permitting we will be there for the October Clean Up too.

This is a worthwhile, fun & rewarding experience. We took part in the May 2018 ‘Spring Clean Up Day‘ and it was a blast. Since all three of us did the full 4-hour shift we got six free tickets which we have yet to use.

Being around the spectacular Castle is always fun and the staff is ultra nice. In May we also got a very nice, free lunch. Hope the weather is good in November.

You should sign up. You will enjoy it. It is good to support the Castle.

‘Castle In The Clouds’ (Moultonborough, NH), Spring Clean Up Day: Cleaning The Trolleys.

We like the “Castle In The Clouds“. We visited for the first time last July, became members right away, and ended up going three more times last year — including Christmas.

We are still members and plan to renew our membership this year because it is a worthy and noble cause.

I got an e-mail about today’s Volunteer Day and thought it would be a worthwhile and possibly even fun thing to do. So, I responded that 3 of us will volunteer for the full 4-hours, 10am to 2pm.

As luck would have it it was a PERFECT day to be outside working.

I had seen that they needed the two trolleys cleaned and when we got there nobody else had shown and interest in doing that. So, I said that we will do it.

It worked out well. I did the outside. Deanna did the inside and Teischan kind of flitted about helping here and there.

It was not trivial, but we did it.

They gave us a GOOD lunch and we got to sit outside, in the Sun, and enjoy the incomparable views. See pictures here.

So, that was the better part of the day.

Met some nice people. Some that knew me. Getting scary. Met three people in total who knew me.

We got 6 free tickets to boot. Not that we need them, but as they pointed out we can give them to friends and family.
