Alton (NH) Property Tax For 2021 Is Up 11.5%, But Lower Than It Was In 2019!

by Anura Guruge

As soon as I saw the property tax bill today (which was late (by the way)), I knew at once that the rate had gone up. My payment was up close to $500.

So, I checked my past bills. It sure had gone up compared to last year; 13.95% vs 12.51%,

But, I was surprised & humbled to see that it had been 13.99% in 2018. I checked what I had paid that December. It was a tad higher than what I owe next month. Smile. C’est  la vie.

So to I, the question is not why did it go up this year — but why did it GO DOWN the year before.

Next year, with COVID, things could be very different. Just a thought.

U.P. ‘Big Boy’ 4-8-8-4 At ‘Steamtown’, PA — The Restoration Plans (THE Scoop).

ONE of the problems.

The Headlines:

  1. Major problem is asbestos (lots of it) and the huge cost of getting it off.
  2. No plans, whatsoever, for MECHANICAL restoration (too far gone, way too expensive) — so just cosmetic restoration.
  3. Only way to move it, for asbestos removal in a contained, airtight space, is through the Turntable.
  4. Too long for the Turntable — tender needs to be separated from engine.

That is what they have had to contend with.

I lucked out. Got a chance to have a nice, chat with a very knowledgeable, longtime volunteer who was touching up the paint on the beautifully restored (though mechanically inert) Reading 2124. He gave me the scoop.

Unlike the UP 4014 ‘Big Boy’, doing the laps in the Midwest, UP 4012 is unlikely to ever run again. It cost $4.8 million to restore the 4014 and the entire annual budget of ‘Steamtown‘ is $4.2M. Plus, there are no tracks in Pennsylvania that can accomodate the Big Boy. The curves are all too tight! The Big Boy was built for the West!

They have to get it into a contained building in order to get rid of the asbestos. Only way, via rails, is through the Turntable. But, the tender has to be separated from the engine so that they will each fit. This requires the built-in drawbar to be cut. They plan to do that when the weather gets cooler, in September or October. Then they will haul it out via the Turntable.

They also need a new ‘jacket’ for the engine. Restoration will take at least a year.

So, that is the story.

My post from last month that did mention the ‘Big Boy’ run across the Midwest.

Just some of the ‘Big Boy’ videos now on YouTube. Search on ‘big boy 4014’.

Well I am sure that some of you by now have sussed out that I am a HUGE train buff. I make no secret of it.

One of my favorite U.S. locomotives is, of course, the ‘Big Boy‘. I used to have two of them in N-scale but my son, then young, destroyed one of them. But, I still have the other.

Watching these videos of the restored U.P. ‘Big Boy 4014’ is quite a treat. I wanted to make sure that you knew they were there on YouTube.

Negative Warnings On Amazon Finally Make A Difference; AMZN Ends At 3 Month Low.

From ‘MarketWatch’, close of market, Friday, August 25, 2017. Click ENLARGE and study.

There was a sharp $15 drop on Thursday, August 24, 2017 but as the afternoon wore on buyers piled in and the loss was cut in half. [I just happened to luck out and do a decent option trade, around noon, when it was close to the low of the day. {Smile}].

On Friday it went down all day, albeit not dramatically — just drifted downwards slowly. But, it closes BELOW $950 at a 3-month low.

Yes, it could drift lower. $925 is realistic. But, I don’t think it will go much below that — BUT I could be wrong.

Day ‘MarketWatch’ Says Amazon Is Set To Drop Below 10% It Goes Up 1.43%

by Anura Guruge

Amazon (AMZN) went up $13.61, i.e., 1.43% on that day, i.e., August 22, 2017. Data from ‘MarketWatch’. Click to ENLARGE and view here.

It was pretty AMAZING but I had a hunch that this would be case. Yes, AMZN at $953 was cheap after the recent sell-off.

However, I have to agree that AMZN will go down, quite a bit, before the year is out BEFORE coming STORMING back into the $1,150s! I am writing options even higher that that! {SMILE}

So be CAREFUL. We will see $940, if not lower, before the December 31, 2017 — per my hunch. You have now been officially warned.

Taken in Alton, on Thursday, November 5, 2015
on Prospect Mountain Road.

The ‘edge’ of this picture in April 2013.

Click for April 2013 post.

For the last two weeks, all day, starting at 7am, it has been a constant barrage of chainsaws screaming, chippers chipping and heavy trucks trundling by with wood chippings and logs.

These pictures don’t do justice PLUS I didn’t trespass into where the major deforestation is taking place. This is a huge, 45 acre+, lot.

I am very pragmatic when it comes to trees being cut down. I do appreciate that it is a renewable source and that all of New Hampshire is said to be in its 3rd, yes 3rd, tree growth cycle.

I do not begrudge anybody from trying to make money. Making money is a noble endeavor. When I owned land I had thought about selling logging rights for money. So, I am NOT complaining.

Just sharing something than many, not living in central NH, may not realize.

I do see the irony. Oil prices are way, way down.

Firewood prices are UP and it has to do with Fracking.

What a world.

insideout1

Click to access IMDB.com listing for this movie.

Went to see this, with the kids (9 & 14), yesterday, in Concord, N.H. When we saw “Jurassic World” on Father’s Day both Teischan (9) and Deanna said they wanted to see “Inside Out“.

It is indeed, in every sense of the word, a very cerebral movie! A movie for thinking kids? That could be an oxymoron. As one approaching 62, who has been fascinated by the workings of the brain for over 40 years, I quite liked this movie. But I am NOT a kid. And that is the crux of the issue.

It is a movie that tries to explain how your emotions work and interact. It is very clever. Some of the cleverness, as is so often the case with kid’s movies, would be totally lost on the kids. E.g., they kept on repeating ‘deja vue’ in one scene. Very clever. Very profound. No way kids would get it let alone appreciate the beauty.

DEFINITELY NOT a movie for young kids. Teischan would not comment on it, though I asked her a number of times, until this morning. Then she, Deanna and Devanee (14) ALL said that it was a SAD movie. That is sad. I am a Disney shareholder (and owned Pixar shares when they first came out c. 1998).

This is a deep movie. It sets out to educate and in a way you can think of it as a dumbed down ‘Basics of Psychology‘ for kids. But kids who are taken to see it, who are expecting to see a ‘Frozen‘, are going to feel cheated and SAD. Not good. My honest advice is not to take young kids, i.e., under 13, to see this. They probably will not thank you.

As an adult, big into the brain, I KNOW that it was a worthwhile movie to make. Some of the metaphors and analogies were a bit flawed and they sometimes took a lot of poeinsideout_ff1tic license, as with the ‘train of thought’, but a lot of thought went into this movie.

It is probably best watched, for free, a few months later, on Amazon Prime — where you can opt to stop watching it without feeling guilty.

They are trying to tie it in with ‘UP’. It is not UP. Up was poignant, funny much of the time and inspiring. ‘Inside Out’ not so much.

OK? Hope this helped.
