Do I Plan To Upgrade From My Google Pixel 2 To The Pixel 3 That Was Announced Today?

by Anura Guruge

Click to access the ‘Techcrunch’ post

Honestly, right this minute I have no intentions of upgrading. I am fairly happy with my Google Pixel 2 and don’t see that much of a ‘Big Bang’ in the Pixel 3 to justify an upgrade. IF they had come up with new camera hardware that would have been a whole different matter. Two cameras, for wide-selfies, doesn’t excite me that much — especially since I take selfies, my-way, using the REAR camera.

So for now I have no plans to upgrade.

I know that Google will do its best to convince me with offers. Maybe next year.

Yes, today I traded up to a Garmin Fenix 5 Plus from my older Fenix 5. But, I got a real sweet deal on that.

Donald Trump, Against-The-Grain, Makes Martin Luther King Jr. ‘Birthplace’ & HQ A ‘National Historic Park’.

For a list of the other
“National Historic Parks” in the U.S.

With all of the other news swirling around Trump and Michael Wolff’s “Fire and Fury” book, this did not get that much coverage — on Monday, January 8, 2018.

To be fair, it is NOT as great and monumental as it sounds.

The original site has been a ‘National Historic Site‘ since October 10, 1980.

What Trump did was upgrade its status from ‘Site’ to ‘Park’ and extends its borders to include the Prince Hall Masonic Temple that King once used as an HQ.

Garmin Vivoactive HR, A Product With ‘No’ Trade-In Value.

by Anura Guruge

From Amazon — a few minutes ago and it was the same last night! Click to ENLARGE.

Just a representative item from eBay. There are more. So folks are bidding up to $81 and there is still nearly 2 days to go. This is closer to the mark. Click to ENLARGE.

Given that I will upgrade to the new Garmin Vivoactive 3 the first thing I did was check what I could get for a trade-in from Amazon since I have had reasonable joy trading in cameras and lenses with Amazon. You don’t get the ‘best’ price BUT there is no hassle and it is instant gratification.

That they are claiming that the trade-in value for a Garmin Vivoactive HR, in BEST condition, is $3.80 is hilarious. It is obviously a mistake and I will contact Amazon (a Prime Member and shareholder) and get them to rectify it.

In the case of the Vivoactive 3 I might TRY to sell it on Craigslist. If you are interested let me know. I am known for my largess when it comes to products I no longer need. {Smile}

USS Fitzgerald Collison, V. Strange Course Change By ACX Crystal AND The Radar Mystery.

USS Fitzgerald ACX Crystal collision Anura Guruge

From ‘Stars and Stripes’. Click to ENLARGE and read here. I FOUND the map that shows the described course change. ‘Stars and Stripes’ link: http://www.stripes.com

Click here for an UPDATED map.

Monday, June 19, 2017 map showing where the
USS Fitzgerald likely was.

It seems inconceivable that a US destroyer, bristling with electronic aids, would be involved in a collision such as this. Even the most basic of radar systems would have provided sufficient data to permit evasive action.

But, I am struck by five things:

  1. I heard on TV that the container-ship, ACX Crystal, had done a strange maneuver ahead of the collision. I went looking for a map and details and found the above. That does seem very strange!
    ….
  2. What was happening on the USS Fitzgerald with its radar? They would have had multiple screens, each with a dedicated, trained operator. How did this happen?
    ….
  3. Though this should NOT in any way be an ‘excuse’, did the Fitzgerald miss out on getting its radar upgraded in 2014 because of cost cutting? But, even a 1970-era radar system should have been enough for the job at hand and the Fitzgerald, launched in 1994, is not that old.
  4. How did the Captain, Bryce Benson, get injured? Wasn’t he on the bridge — and there should have been plenty of handrails!
  5. Was this MALICIOUS? I am going to refrain from using other words!

This is worth following. Something very strange, akin to the incredible ‘Malaysian Airlines MH370 disappearance‘ occurred here too.

Sony a6500: Updating The Firmware From v1.01 To v.1.02.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access the Sony firmware update page for the a6500 — with 1.02 to the latest version.

Click to ENLARGE. Successful update of my Sony a6500 to 1.02 from 1.01.

The Sony a6500, though it has only been available as of November 29, 2016, is already at v1.02 of the firmware, 1.02 having been rushed out in early March to fix a rather nasty ‘dead camera’ scenario.

Version 1.01 was released on January 25, 2017 — just 57-days into its product life. Makes you think.

Version 1.02 was released 41 days later.

At this rate 1.03 should be out soon!

To be fair, the updating to 1.02 was easy, painless and quite quick. I didn’t time it, but I think it only took about 6 minutes. I could be wrong since I was not paying attention and was doing other things.

What I wanted to share with you was that updating to 1.02 was NOT an hassle.

Didn’t notice any changes after I did, BUT I have yet to run into any unexpected snags with this camera.

Updated The Firmware On My New Full-Frame Sony a7 II From 3.10 To 3.30.

by Anura Guruge

Click pictures to ENLARGE.

Sony’s ‘Updater’ utility for Sony a7s — running on Windows 7.

Click image to access Forum post I started at DPReview.com

Firmware version 3.30 for Sony a7 II (i.e., ILCE7M2) was release on November 18, 2016.

Since I ordered my Sony a7 II from Cameta Camera (via Amazon) on May 11, 2017, I had just assumed that it would be at 3.30.

It was NOT!

It was at 3.10. There were ZERO (‘0’) shutter actuations and the camera does look new. So, I am hoping that this is STILL a brand new camera. IF SO, this does not make sense.

I have e-mailed both Cameta Camera and Sony seeking an explanation.

******

I was NOT happy being 2 version down on the Firmware.

So after some Googling to make sure that 3.30 was NOT a total dud, I went ahead and started the upgrade process this morning using the Sony instructions and tool.

On Windows 7 (64-bit) had to download the Sony ‘updater’ TWICE. First download was somehow corrupted and would not run. Though the download finished, without issue, the downloaded file was 169MB — when it should have been 219MB.

Second download was fine, and was 219MB.

After that everything went without a glitch.

Took 14- minutes — which is pretty damn close to the 15-minute Sony tells you.

So, I am happy with that. Not sure I notice any differences. That AF might be a tad faster might just be wishful thinking on my part.

OBiTALK Forcing A $10 Upgrade To Continue Google Voice Support!

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and have a gander.

Click to ENLARGE. Slightly out-of-date but much of it is still in place.

I have been very successfully and gainfully using an OBi110Voice Service Bridge‘ to BOND our landline from TDS with an VoIP service from Google Voice. Basically I can use either the TDS landline or Google Voice to place calls and calls on the TDS landline comes in (as does calls on Google Voice).

Last week the OBi started giving me grief. Yes, I had changed my Google password (after we had our rental car, with electronics, broken into in San Francisco) and OBiTalk, quite correctly, needed the new password. But, even after that it kept on DISCONNECTING my Google Voice service. That was annoying. Then on the 4th day of this palava OBiTalk ADMITTED what it was really up to.

It wanted $10 off me to UPDATE my software and thereby have continued, uninterrupted Google Voice service. I didn’t really have any choice. $10 or NO Google Voice. I, of course, paid — via Amazon Checkout.

Just seemed sneaky and bordering on extortion. Easy way to get $10 per customer. $10 for FREE Google Voice is a bargain. I would have paid that without any problem. Seems a pity that OBi goes about doing this in what comes across as an underhand way!

Avast Internet Security Ver. 8: I Am Not Happy And I Have Used Avast For 7 Years (+).

Avast8

Avast8v

Thursday evening Avast!, my antivirus, firewall and ‘internet security’ product of choice, started popping up its annoying, pesky blue boxes saying that I have to update my program (i.e., the software). I get virus updates a few times a day.

I had been at Version 7 for quite a long time and was reasonably happy — though about a year ago there was a nasty hang.

Then without any warning it upgraded me to Version 8 with a new user interface.

Worse still, without giving me a choice, it installed Chrome! That was a no, no. I was not happy. [Since then, in last 7 hours, they have updated their installer and it now asks whether you want Chrome. I guess they must had faced an uproar.]

It took the LONGEST time to install — and this is a i7 4 core machine with 12GB of memory. Most things are fast on this. I guess it took so long because it was installing the latest version of Chrome.

But, after the lengthy install all seemed OK.

This morning Avast Ver. 7 on Devanee’s laptop stopped working! I tried the usual tricks. No luck. We had to go to Bedford so we were in a rush. I powered up this PC to get another copy of Devanee’s Avast license.

When I did that, I got a SCARY blue pop up jump at me saying that Avast wanted to update my Adobe Acrobat Reader. Whiskey, Tango FOX! I don’t want Avast to update anything other than itself! That is intrusive and obnoxious. Avast has gone down a few stripes in my book for that little trick.

Yes, worked out how to turn that DANGEROUS feature off. On the ‘homepage’ icon-based interface (at top above), click on ‘Software Updater’ and then click the STOP button. That disables that stupid feature.

It tries to do too much. I hate that.

Just do what you are supposed to do. I used to be the biggest fan of ‘System Mechanic‘ for years. Then they went down this route. I uninstalled it, on all our PCs, and have never gone back.

We have PAID Avast Internet Security on 5 PCs. Avast, other than a few spectacular screw-ups over the years, has been good. I know that it is good at intercepting bad things.

But this was real annoying. To exacerbate matters, I had to uninstall Avast 7 on Devanee’s PC and re-install it again. So, I was not having a good day with Avast.

The Chrome thing was ironic. I obviously did not have Chrome on this PC. I had been meaning to get it. But, I knew it would take some time. I now have it. I have played with it a few times since Avast installed it! Yes, I plan to migrate to Chrome. I have had it with FireFox too. I am very patient with software that I like, but there is a limit. I have used FireFox for 12 years. Avast for at least 8. But, when I get exasperated, that is it.

If you get Avast 8, make sure to go through each feature, individually and then on the ‘Settings tab’, and disable as much as you can.
