My Jaguar XJS V-12 (1989) Goes To Alton, New Hampshire.

Out and about two days running (in every sense of the word). Well it, i.e., the XJS, along with the XJ8, the MGB and the Nissan Quest, all needed to be registered prior to month end. Plus the XJS needed some petrol. For those of you who have never owned a Jaguar, Jaguars run on PETROL, not gas. Got that. This was at the Town Hall.

They are all registered. You can actually see the bright green 2018 decal on the number plate. Next step — having them inspected. In the case of the Jags that will be Wednesday.

My Jaguar XJS V-12 (1989) Gets A Rare Outing.

I have NOT driven it much at all this year. I have, of course, been using my 2002 Jaguar XJ8 — though not that much either.

It is that time of the year. Both Jags and the MGB need to be registered by October 1 — which also means, in New Hampshire, that I have to get them inspected. So, I thought I should stretch the XJS’ legs prior to taking it to ‘Paul’ at B-Boys, in Barnstead, on Wednesday. It is a fun car to drive.

Click to access the Lucas Oil product page for this ‘stop leak’. I bought the gallon from Amazon and had it shipped, ‘Free’, thanks to my Amazon Prime.

Of course my Jaguar XJS leaks, not much, but it does leak. Yes, I knew that when I bought it. But from what I hear it is pretty hard to find a V-12 XJS that does not leak. So it is a question of finding one that doesn’t leak excessively.

Paul Bousquet.

When I took it in for it ‘full’ shake-down at ‘B-Boys‘, in Barnstead, N.H., by master mechanic Paul Bousquet, he steamed cleaned the block and had a good look at the leak. Told me it wasn’t worth fixing it because there was at least 12 hours of labour to try and do it properly. And I trust Paul. So I have been putting a little bit of oil every few weeks or so. That said, I have probably put 100 miles on the XJS in the last 2 months. So it doesn’t get driven much.

Then, this last Saturday, we visited (as we are wont to do of late), Kati & Gordon Preston in Barnstead, with my son Matthew. The Prestons, by any measure, are AMAZING people. Gordon, a fellow Brit, is a very proficient and creative, British-qualified engineer. Plus he drives Land- and Range-Rovers. He told me about the Lucas ‘Stop Leak’ and how he uses it in his latest Range Rover. Plus it is Lucas. As soon as I got home I ordered a gallon. It just came. Haven’t put it in. BUT, wanted to share with you. Don’t think it will totally stop the leaks. But if it slows them down I will be very happy. Oh, a gallon from Amazon cost $31.29.

1968 MGB Starts 2nd Year With Antique Plates & An Inspection Sticker Good Till April 2017.

We got the British Green 1968 MGB on September 14, 2014. So in October it started its 2nd year with us, especially in terms of registration and inspection stickers.

This time around we took the MGB to B-Boys of Barnstead — the best mechanics, for miles, in our opinion. This was the first time that Paul Bousquet, the owner of B-Boys, had seen the MGB. Given that he is very thorough and conscientious he found a TON of bodywork that had to be fixed. We had to leave it with Paul for nearly 10 days! We missed it not seeing it in the garage.

Last year I just did not have time to go down to Concord to get NH Antique plates. This year we made time. We dropped the plates off with Paul Monday evening. Today we picked it up (though to be fair to Paul it was ready yesterday afternoon). So now it sports, for the first time, NH Antique plates — and by that virtue has an inspection sticker valid till April 2017. So we are happy. It wasn’t cheap BUT it wasn’t a total arm-and-leg either. Just a few fingers and toes.

Paul joked as to how many thousands of miles we planned to drive it before it is back for its inspection in April 2017. He knew. We will be lucky IF we drive 500 miles in total! Now that we have the V-12 Jaguar XJS convertible we don’t drive the MGB much — just enough to keep it ticking over.

Pictures taken with my new, less than a week old, Panasonic Lumix FZ1000.

Robert Gilbert, born in Australia and the owner of a nifty Mini Cooper, is a friend from “Great Waters“. Like I he is a volunteer stagehand and his wife ushers along with Deanna and Devanee. Robert and I, as owners of British cars (and I won’t mention the other cars he loves and owns), often chat about cars. While doing the setup for the “Glenn Miller Orchestra” on Friday, he told me, when I asked him what he had been up to since I last saw him a week ago, that he had been to the “Simeone Auto Museum” in Philadelphia. He appeared to be a bit disappointed that I did not know about it. Later on in the evening I did realize that I had indeed heard about it — on an episode of “American Pickers” that we used to watch religiously until we got our Roku 3 and discovered the manifolds treats available via ‘Amazon Prime‘ such as “Downton Abbey” and “Mr. Selfridge“.

This morning Robert, who used to do mechanical instrumentation for nuclear plants and appears to be a gentleman of many talents, sent me a whole set of delightful pictures he had taken at ‘Simeone’. With his permission I am going to share some with YOU for your enjoyment and edification. Thank you, Robert. CLICK TO ENLARGE.

I guess I have known about ‘Jagbits’ for some time now — even ahead of getting my first Jaguar, the burgundy red XJ8 from (eBay) “European-Cars“.

I had called them up when I was looking for XJ8s asking about parts for the moonroof because I had found a red XJ8L in Maine with an unretractable moonroof. ‘Gary’ was very helpful.

Then when I got an XJS, ‘Dewey’ the owner, a hardcore enthusiast who did a lot of the work on it himself, sent me a long e-mail with a list of repairs I should get done — money and time permitting. Against each one he had a link to the parts I would need. Each link went to Jagbits!

Last week I ordered the first two parts: a transmission mount kit and a subframe mount for the rear suspension. I was told just to get a bushing for the transmission. It was $17 at Jagbits. I have been around the block enough to know that that didn’t seem right. I called Jagbits. Got Gary again (and I have since learned that his full name is ‘Gary Ilcyn’.) I explained what I was looking for. He knew right away what I was talking about. He told me that they sold a kit with a spring and other stuff — all of which should be replaced if you were taking it all apart for the bushing. That made sense. They were offering free shipping of orders more than $125. So I went ahead and ordered the 2nd item on the e-mail. So I now got free shipping.

I had the parts, FedEx, within 2 days. Excellent service.

I am hooked. I don’t see a need to go anywhere else for my Jag bits. I am sold on Jagbits.

So this is a wholehearted ENDORSEMENT of Jagbits and Gary Ilcyn by a very committed Jag nut (who even owns shares in Tata Motors the owners of Jags).

SMILE.

Deanna had seen it a couple of weeks ago and had told me that I should go check it out! Though she is NOT in favor of me getting anymore Jags she still is willing to let me look.

Devanee and I took a quick break from Friday’s ‘all-day’ “Blood, Sweat & Tears” setup, to go and have a quick look.

It is at 458 Center Street in Wolfeboro. The big “1810 House B&B and Antiques“. Ask for the son, Chris O’Brien. Chris normally lives in Pennsylvania. That explains the plates (and his phone number). Yes, you can call him on: 215-622-5841.

It is in good enough shape. I, of course, prefer the topless. But I am committed to helping Chris sell this. Word of caution. Chris does NOT have to sell it. So there will be a hard floor as to how far you can beat him down! SMILE.

P.S., the ‘HE’ stands for ‘high efficiency‘, i.e., better mileage.

Indian Tata Motors have owned the Jaguar Land Rover brand since 2008.

So, given that I can’t afford a new Jaguar I decided that I would do the next best thing — buy a few shares in Tata Motors, the 17th largest ‘car’ company in the world with revenues of US $42 billion.

Having spent a lot of time in India I am no stranger to Tata. Plus the name, an offshoot from a former acronym, is one very familiar to Sinhalese, like I, from Sri Lanka. ‘Tata’, or ‘Tatta’, means father — not that dissimilar to the yiddish word.

So this is the same logic I used with Sony. I can’t afford the Sony A7 RII or the Sony RX10 II (which I really would like to own) — so I bought a few SNE shares, i.e., Sony stock in the U.S.

TTM is the U.S. ‘version’ (i.e., ADS — American Depository Stock) of the Tata shares. It, at around $30 – $32, is not that expensive — say to Apple, Amazon or NetFlix. It has taken a hit of late but that is true of most stock.

So, I now have some affinity with Jaguar — shareholder PLUS two old Jags.

That Jaguar brand is owned by an Indian company only bothers me some. India to me is still the British Raj. The largest country in our glorious British Commonwealth. So there is still British in it. It isn’t like if it was owned by a Chinese, Korean, Japanese or Kraut company. So I am OK with the Indian ownership SINCE the Jaguar Land Rover COMPANY is still in Britian.

Well we actually have two cars that do qualify, the 1989 black V-12 XJS and the 1968 British Racing Green MGB. Though they are both in great shape and has it happened Devanee & I took them both out for a spin today, neither are in real show condition and I never plan to get them as such. To me the joy and point of having these cars is to drive them — as much as I can, and we do.

Plus this Summer I learnt something else about myself. I really have no interest taking my car to car shows. No it is not a case of sour grapes in that I do have two cars that would be admired by many at shows. It is just that having people look at my cars and having to answer questions about them doesn’t really turn me on. Yes, as ever, it also comes down to TIME. I would rather drive the cars than have them sitting around. So we haven’t gone to any shows though we could have gone to plenty. But I might enter the XJS in the Sandwich Fair parade. Will have to get Deanna to look into that.

Anywho. Thought you might want to know about this show. Enjoy.
