Just a FEW of my adoptive father’s 55+ books.

Google ‘Ananda Guruge‘ if you want to check out his Buddhist bona fides.

I have been railing against religious violence in Sri Lanka for YEARS.

To say that this Easter bombing saddens & distresses I does not even come close to genuinely capturing my disapprobation.

This is SO anathema to the happy multi-ethnic & multi-religious Ceylon (Sri Lanka only as of the 1970s) that I grew up in, 1953 to 1967.

My adoptive family was as Buddhist as you could get. Check out some of my father’s Buddhist books shown above and Google him. He was a Buddhist scholar, ACTIVIST and, alas, also one of the original architects of the ‘Buddhism First‘ precept for Ceylon. But, he was as open-minded when it came to religion as one could be. My SURROGATE FATHER, my adoptive mother’s brother-in-law, with whom I spent nearly as much time as with my family — and who influenced me more than any other man — was a practicing Baptist. My ‘father’ never had any issues with that. We celebrated Easter and Christmas, at my surrogate father’s rather fancy house with abandon replete with all the best goodies that money could get in Ceylon — imported ham, lamb, cakes etc. My surrogate father, who was a lawyer, and his wife, who as the Assistant Principal at Royal College (Sri Lanka’s premier boys school) were rich — and had no kids, bar I.

In addition, we had more Christians on my “mother’s” side; she one of 9. One of her brother’s was married to a Catholic as had one of her sisters. We were a CLOSE family — multi-religious. Nobody cared about who was who. We all mucked into to each other’s holidays.

My “Father’s” best friend, who he met with near daily, was a prominent muslim. Never an issue. Our neighbors, that my “mother” genuinely treated as part of her family, were Tamil Catholics. They were at our house, without fail, every day.

So, I grew up in an environment where religion had no ‘color’ or ‘race’. It was just like a name. Made no difference.

This is why this religious violence disturbs me so.

All that said, I refuse to jump to conclusions as to who perpetrated this horrendous series of crimes. The last TWO bombings, which were of private houses, puzzles me.

Though I am NO LONGER a Sri Lankan (in terms of citizenship or affinity) I do know, alas, the mentality of my brethren. We can be a devilishly devious, unscrupulous, ruthless bunch of bastards.

These bombings, I hate to say it as such, were ‘genius’. It has created the PERFECT TSUNAMI.

We now can have a circular firing squad, consisting of Buddhists, Christians and Muslims, each taking pot shots at the other. READ BETWEEN THE LINES.

This was geared to cause political, social and ECONOMIC upheaval. It will, of course, decimate the burgeoning tourist trade. That will have far reaching knock-on effects.

Not good.

But, please do NOT jump to conclusions.

It is not always the usual suspects.

Sri Lankan politicians are ruthless to a level that others will never comprehend.

Read Between The Line!

Facebook Picks Sri Lanka To Be Its First Guinea Pig For ‘Fake News’ Eradication Program.

by Anura Guruge

From the UK “Guardian”. Click image to access. Google from plenty more — quite a bit of coverage from India.

Ah! Facebook is going to try ‘Fake News‘ removal starting in Sri Lanka! Why? Why Sri Lanka? Because ‘Fake News’ has caused mob violence. Yes, there was one incident recently …

Not sure if this is good or bad.

You would think they would start with the U.S. — with the midterm elections coming up in a few months.

Nope. Better start with Sri Lanka. Yes, Facebook could argue that Fake News in Sri Lanka leads to loss of life. But, Fake News in the U.S. cost an election.

Anywho. This is a start. Lets see how it proceeds.

Since even buying a cup of tea in Sri Lanka can be politically charged, this is NOT going to be easy — i.e., getting agreement from Sri Lankans as to what is Fake News and what it isn’t. Fake News to one is political fodder to another. Facebook may not have realized this about Sri Lanka. Hhhhmmm!

Sri Lanka Gets Dragged Into ‘Cambridge Analytica’s’ Sordid Facebook Scandal!

by Anura Guruge

From the U.K. “Daily Mail” …

The “Channel 4 News” video (on YouTube) …
the ‘Sri Lanka‘ part starts at the 9 minute mark,
i.e., nearly half the way through.

Sri Lanka is just being used here as a ruse — BAIT — as far as we can tell. But, we will never know whether ‘Cambridge Analytica‘ was involved in prior Sri Lanka elections or the ‘current’ one — in that elections are always on the cards in SL.

Kind of ironic that this is the 2nd time in a week that Sri Lanka and Facebook have appeared together in the same headlines. An unlikely duo.

Sri Lankans, from what I know, are unlikely to have needed expensive foreign help to ‘play dirty’ in elections. We seems to be very good at doing that on our own — with our own local touches, which involve (let’s just call it) bodily harm. Yes, politics are VICIOUS in Sri Lanka. It is certainly a blood sport.

But, cracked me up to see Sri Lanka getting mentioned on U.S. television. Wow. Fame again.

Sri Lanka’s Ban Of Facebook, Temporary Be It, Was Unbecoming & OMINOUS!

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and glance at here. From “Reuters”. Google “Sri Lanka Facebook” for more.

Sri Lanka needs to be BETTER than this.

Sri Lanka, for all of its convulsions for the last 70-years, is meant to be PROUD democracy.

It is NOT China, Egypt or some tinpot African dictatorship. I was disappointed to read about this. I though ‘we’ (though I gave up my Sri Lanka citizenship 35-years ago) had put media censorship behind. [More on that in a second.]

The ban on Facebook was during the latest spate of violence against the Muslims. The Government, rightly or wrongly, believed that Facebook posts were inciting the troubles. They had declared a 10-day State of Emergency, so everything, including closing down Social Media was game.

Ceylon/Sri Lanka and ‘State of Emergency’. I remember them well though my life there, 1953 – 1967 was during a relatively peaceful time!

Following the wildly and widely successful ‘Schools Takeover‘ [i.e., forced nationalization] program, Prime Minister (Aunty) Sirimavo Bandaranaike and her then favored henchman, my adoptive father, mounted a ‘Newspaper Nationalization’ program. My Adoptive Father, a conflicted fish as I came to learn, had a strong socialistic streak. He was all in favor. I remember though that unlike with the ‘Schools Takeover’ (where they was no dissent within the circles we moved), he got got a bit of pushback from friends and family. He used to argue vehemently that we needed it for the good of the country. Thankfully that program never came to be. I think Aunty B. ceased to be P.M.

So, let’s not try and revisit past ghosts.

I worry that this is the INCREASING Chinese influence on Sri Lanka.

If I was still Sri Lankan I would do whatever I could to make sure this didn’t happen again.

Buddhist On Muslim Violence Erupts In Sri Lanka (Again) — Just As I Have Warned.

As the above posts show I have been very concerned about this since 2014. There are more posts and IF you are interested, please search on “Sri Lanka Buddhists” & “Myanmar“.

The hardline Sri Lankan Buddhists have been itching for this ‘fight’. They want to emulate what is happening in Myanmar (née Burma) and the poor Rohingya.

This is Trump style Nationalism Sri Lanka-style. A Buddhist state with no other religions. Unlikely to happen BUT the Sri Lankan Buddhists will be eager and happy to spill as much blood as possible to try and make that happen.

This is the Buddhist version of the Crusades. Pacificity be damned. They THINK they are doing “Buddha’s” work. I hate to admit this BUT most of US Sri Lankan Buddhists are NOT that bright! That is the crux of the problem. Stupidity and ignorance.

I ceased to be a Buddhist 46-years ago, and a Sri Lankan 35-years ago.

Yes, my adoptive father bears SOME BLAME for some of this. But, here is the supreme irony. In the 1950s & 1960s, when this rabid Buddhist revor was still in its embryonic state, his BEST FRIEND was a Muslim, Senator A. M. A. Aziz. How my adoptive father, who became more and more like Trump as he grew older, would reconcile what is happening in Ceylon with his relationship with Senator A. M. A. Aziz would be fascinating to study. Being the poser he was, to his death, he would rationalize it. But, never in my eyes.

This is so sad.

I really would like the International Cricket Council (ICC) to intervene. Because after sex and violence, Sri Lankan Buddhist love their cricket. A boycott of Sri Lanka, in terms of cricket, would stop any violence in its tracks.

“Peter Rabbit” Movie (2018) — Very Funny But With Some Issues …

by Anura Guruge

The fuss about it downplaying food allergies is VERY REAL. Click to access the “New York Post” coverage. Google for more.

Went to see it, on Valentine’s Day, with both kids (who had early release from school), in Portsmouth (NH) at Cinemagic. We more or less had the whole large studio to ourseleves — just 5 others for this 4:30pm matinee. We are not complaining. It was nice to have all that space sans any distractions.

Fun movie. Very funny. Beautifully rendered — particularly the Lakes District and Harrods; I rather familiar with both. I have visited Beatrix Potter’s house in the Lakes Region — and had a Harrods account for many, many year; it one of my favorite stores. The detail was exquisite.

Lot to like, and pukkah entertainment, by and large, albeit with some blemishes.

Domhnall Gleeson looking too much like Jared Kushner for my liking and comfort.

Yes, it does trivialize and even make fun of food allergies. That is not good (though I am one who does feel that ‘we’ have gone slightly too overboard on the whole thing). What was Sony thinking? Don’t they have any lawyers?

While I appreciate the whole storyline is about the feud with the McGregors, I think there was a tad too much violence than was needed. Others would disagree. But, this is meant to be a kids movie and we are supposed to encourage kids to resolve conflict without resorting to violence! So …

The rabbits are well rendered as LONG as their faces are NOT being shown in closeup. Then their eyes look like those of aliens and all the contours look wrong — in my opinion.

Domhnall Gleeson who plays the young McGregor reminded me of Jared Kushner and that made me queasy! What can I say. Check out this photo —>

Now, this is something that those who know me will find surprising coming from my fingers in that I am not that kind of man. But, Rose Byrne who plays ‘Bea’ is very pretty BUT I have a better ‘chest’ than she has! Wow. She looks 2 dimensional, NOT that that detracted any way from her performance and presence. Just happened to notice.

Other than all this, it was good fun. Enjoyed. Will probably watch it again when it is on ‘TV’.
