India vs Afghanistan Only Test Match — Like Shooting Fish In A Barrell!

by Anura Guruge

This was ludicrous! It really was like shooting fish in a barrell. The poor Afghans were totally and utterly outclassed. It was cruel in the end.

The Afghans lasted a total of 65.9 overs across BOTH their innings. They are supposed to be ODI experts but they didn’t last 50 overs in either innings.

I hadn’t seen that much of Afghanistan in the past, but what I had seen, I had liked. They were exciting and their spinners were magical. And I also got to see Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the IPL. Rashid looked a million dollars in the IPL. In this match he looked pedestrian.

Having them play India in their first Test match was crazy — even if this was India B (without Virat Kohli). Maybe they should have cut their teeth against Bangladesh, Zimbabwe or even Sri Lanka. But, based on their performance they would have struggled against any Test side. Yes, they will improve over time.

But, they have to start getting realistic. Shahzad is a really nice guy and his batting can be exhilarating. But, he really is too fat for Test cricket and his run out proved that. He needs to be put out to grass.

IF South Africa Loses 2nd Test To India — DESERVED To Lose For Playing Like Pillocks.

by Anura Guruge

I am writing this U.S. Eastern Time (21:00) having only seen half of the Day 4 highlights. Plan to watch the rest within the next hour — while having my customary late dinner.

I like South Africa (and the players) and as you can see here celebrated when they won the 1st Test.

I can’t believe some of the stupid mistakes they have made in the 2nd Test — especially when batting.

Vernon Philander’s runout was INEXCUSABLE. It is not like he is new to the game. What had he been chewing? His bowling was also below par.

Hashim Amla’s runout broke my heart. He was run out. He is such a phlegmatic, nice guy. He should not have gone for that run. If he hadn’t been run out he would have easily scored another 40-runs — easy. That would have made all the difference.

AB de Villiers, of course, batter well, in both innings BUT his dismissal in the 2nd innings, caught behind, off his glove, was NOT worthy of a player of his experience, talent and stature. Come ON. You could have weaved out of the way better, or stepped back and whacked it. It is dismissals like that that lose matches.

IF they WIN, Virat Kohli, as ever, deserves a huge amount of praise and credit. It would NOT have been just his large century, it is his irrepressible, ebullient presence.

Mike Brearley, one of the BEST Test captains ever — and certainly the most cerebral and educated —  used to say: “there are captains that wait for things to happen, and others that make things happen”. Kohli definitely falls into the latter category. Just his presence in the field seems to make things happen.

I am keeping my fingers crossed …

South Africa’s Nail-Biting Win Against India, In The 1st Test Match, Made My Day!

by Anura Guruge

From Cricinfo.com, of course. Click here for coverage.

What a 4th day, after the 3rd was lost, completely, to rain.

I like the South African team — as I can plainly be seen by posts such as this. I love their genuine camaraderie, that transcends color, culture and religion. Nelson would be so proud and happy of this team. There is no other team in the World, right now, that has this level of seamless integration and bonding. Always a joy to see them.

When India skittled them out for 130 with just a 207-run lead I was SURE that Virat Kohli and his boys will score that with ease. They had a day and a half to do so.

I, however, was hoping that South Africa might fight back and OH BOY, did they.

It was so exciting and tense. Wow. Really enjoyed it.

WOW. WOW. WOW.

What a match. After another amazing innings by Virat ‘Midas’ Kohli and 192 on the board I thought that India had it sealed and that my prediction, even from this morning, of the ‘Battle of the Raj‘, India v. England, was going to the Final of the ICC World Twenty20, #ICCWT20.

When Gayle went for 5, after 6 balls, I was convinced the Windies were screwed. Then Marlon ‘Bloody’ Samuels, yet again, played like girl having her first period and wracked by cramps.

I have always LIKED Lendl Simmons BUT had forgotten about him. He hadn’t played in any of the previous matches. I thought we was on the field as a sub. And he dropped a catch. But Lendl CAN BAT — as he demonstrated.

And Johnson Charles and Andre Russell. They didn’t even need Bravo or Sammy. AMAZING.

I did say, on Monday, that for the West Indies to beat India, at home, somebody would have to score 70+ of 180+. Lendl Simmons came close; 82 at 161 S/R. Andre Russell batted at 215 S/R.

Now the BIG question … did the Windies play their ONE BIG innings of the tournament. Will they have any gas in the tank for the Final on April 3?

It will be fascinating.

Thank YOU the West Indies. Sorry for the all the BAD things I have said about you in the last year. SMILE.
