Mercury, Atypically Visible This Week, Is Supposedly Sporting A Comet-Like Tail.

Mercury, however, is NOT a comet. It is beyond unlikely that it contains any frozen volatiles. It has been too close to the Sun for way, way too long. So, this tail has to be dust being blown away from its surface by Solar winds. Neat. Mercury, at best, naked eye, is but a small, faint spec. A dot. Very unlikely you would see this tail naked eye. But, try to get a gander. The above map should help.

872 Comets Supposedly ‘Visible’ — All Telescopically; No Naked-Eye Anymore.

I wanted a good handle on this. Yes, the MPC maintains a list, BUT it is hard to analyze. So, I used that data to create one of my SPECIAL Excel spreadsheets. Now I can slice & dice the data at my will.

The MPC list has 872 valid entries! That is a LOT.

C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) was the brightest — albeit based on a July 13, 2020, reading. Well, that is now way obsolete. The brightness of C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) is NOW above ‘5’. It has to be ‘5’ or BELOW to be naked-eye visible. So, none of these 872 comets are naked-eye visible.

The next brightest, periodic, 2P/Encke, is at 10. That puts it even beyond binoculars.

So, a heads up. No point looking up. No naked-eye visible comets at present. SMILE.

That is why C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE)  was so special.

Early on in the ‘evening’ close to the Moon, in the Southwest, is Venus
— very big and bright.

Two days ago we had the perfect ‘Moon trying to eat Venus’ conjunction
(the ‘crescent and star‘ symbol that appears on Islamic flags).

Later on at night, STARTING in the East,
it is Jupiter.

But, as we spin around, everything in the night sky moves from East to West.

So during the night Jupiter will swing from East to West —
as the two images above show.

Every night around 10:45, before starting my 3rd shift, I take the dogs out.

In the Winter I always look up, towards the East, to see Jupiter.

During the Winter, night-by-night, Jupiter will be, at the same time, say 10:45, further West.

That is because we are all going around the Sun …

Neptune, Uranus and Pluto are up there too — BUT, not naked eye visible. OK?

Not Just ‘Comet ISON’, Now With Double Tail, But Three Other Major Comets In The Morning Sky, Lovejoy, Encke & LINEAR X1.

Comet ISON prospects, quite literally, are getting brighter by the day.

It is intact and is becoming more ‘active’, i.e., spewing out more gas and dust which is what leads to the coma and tail, by the minute.

Right now it is travelling at more than 10 miles PER SECOND. That is in excess of 38,000 miles per hours. So it is getting closer to the Sun at a very fast clip.

Ameteur astronomers using backyard telescopes are capturing some amazing pictures. Check this one from October 5, from Austria (that is in Europe).

On November 2, 2013, i.e., next week, it will cross Earth’s orbit for the first time, i.e., inbound (towards Sun) crossing. Check this post for orbital diagram.

But, on that day Earth is way off to the right — 112 MILLION miles away, that is 1.2 x the Earth-Sun distance.

So, we will not be able to see Comet ISON, naked eye, on November 2.

The EARLIEST possibility for a potential glimpse is November 17 — some of this also having to do with moonlight getting in the way.

Closer to the 17th, as things become more clear, I will post an update.

Perihelion (closest approach to the Sun) is today, March 10, 2013. As it turns around the Sun it also crosses the celestial equator, moving from the southern skies to the ones that really count — the northern skies, i.e., US. People are already seeing it — those close to the equator, such as my brethren in Sri Lanka getting early dibs.

As I have said before March 12 & 13 should be particularly good since the crescent Moon will provide a good reference. Try and get to a high point, like a small hill, so that you can see over trees — if you live in the country.

C/2011 L4 (Pan-STARRS) over South Africa — last week.




C/2011 L4 as indicated by its official designation was discovered in 2011, on June 6, 2011.

It was discovered ‘robotically’ [i.e., by automated, computer software scanning digital images] by the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) initiative whose telescopes are located at the summit of Mount Haleakala on Maui, Hawaii. Hence the parenthetical name ‘Pan-STARRS’.

Calling it Comet Pan-STARRS is wrong and meaningless!

The Pan-STARRS program, an automated survey of the sky, discovers comets at a rapid rate. There are many, many comets with the parenthetical name ‘Pan-STARRS’ — this name denoting the discoverer. It is only real and unique name is C/2011 L4. Comet’s can only be named after a person involved with its discovery (or the calculation of its orbit). Comets such as this one, discovered by computer software, are not assigned a name of a person. And NO, you cannot buy its name.

Alas, it won’t be very bright. So, provided we have clear skies, next Tuesday and Wednesday, close to the Moon — around sunset.
