‘Castle In The Clouds’ [NH], Spring Clean, June 25, 2020 — Painting Back Walls & Cleaning Trolleys.

Washing the red trolley.

Painting the back wall of the Cafe.

Before & After.

Done. It matches.

Painted the counter too since it was peeling.

We have been volunteering at the ‘Spring Cleanup‘ for the last two years. This was our 3rd year — at least for Teischan & I. We have also done the ‘Fall Cleanup’.

Cleaning the trolleys have become our speciality. This was our 3rd year doing so. There was only two this year. We have done all three in prior years. This year we had to fisrt remove Christmas decorations from December. It is all fun.

Then I agreed to pain the back wall of the ‘Cafe’. I had NO idea what I was volunteering for — & was definitely not dressed for painting. But, c’est la vie. It was a beautiful day & I am used to going topless. Yes, the wall needs another coat of paint. We, however, had run out of both paint & time. But, it will do for now.

The Castle is opening on July 1, 2020. It is looking good.

We will make a few visits between now & Christmas.

Definitely worth visiting. Enjoy.

‘Castle In The Clouds’ [NH], Spring Clean Up Day — May 18, 2019.

by Anura Guruge

As we had done last year, we were there for the ‘Spring Cleanup‘ this year too — except this time it was just Teischan (13) & I. Given our ‘success’ cleaning the trolleys last year we volunteered to do that again this year. And again another change. Last year they had two trolleys out. This year just one. The other two were being fixed. Plus, they needed to use the trolley latre that morning to ferry some new employees up the Castle for orientation. So, we only had an hour — maybe an hour and a half at best. We did our best. They wanted us to concentrate on the inside.

Amazing how dirty it gets. I spent a fair amount of time on the brass. Got some of it gleaming.

Beautiful day! The sun was out, in glory, and it was borderline hot. Great day to work outside. Having lunch on the terrace was even better. It was a privilege.

We had fun. Great people and a worthy cause — and you can’t beat the setting.

They have a new — very nice and knowledgeable ‘Director of Buildings & Grounds — Al Sochard. He was very kind and helpful.

A good day was had by all — methinks.

Judging by those that stayed for lunch we didn’t have as many people as last year. But hard to tell. Some left before lunch.

Weather permitting we will be there for the October Clean Up too.

“Battle Of The Somme” #WeAreHere Tributes Across The U.K. By Uniformed Reenactment Volunteers.

by Anura Guruge

Bloodiest known battle
in all of human history.

794,238 Allied troops from the
U.K., Australia, Bermuda, Canada, India, Newfoundland,
New Zealand, South Africa, Southern Rhodesia & France
lost their life in this battle
that lasted from July 1 to November 18, 1916.

[The U.S. did NOT participate in WW I until April 6, 1917.]

This #WeAreHere reenactment by 1,500 uniformed volunteers
was to remind people of all those that were lost.
It appears that each volunteer carried business cards
showing the name one that died in the battle.

Very neat. Very British. Very touching.
Very sobering.

Yes, of course, I appreciate that this “U.S. Citizen” criteria is meant to be a ‘first-cut’ security precaution. And that is exactly why I think it is incongruous and inexplicable.

While just about everybody would agree that you would not want undocumented aliens trying to volunteer, are YOU really trying to tell me, that in 2015, the appropriate U.S. agencies have less documentation on legal, i.e., documented, residents than on born-in-the-U.S. citizens? I would contend that they have more ‘dirt’ on the documented aliens than those that were just born here. think about it. Just the process of ‘documenting’ means that information was collected.

So that is my first point. Just saying “U.S. Citizens” rather than “U.S. Citizens, registered permanent residents and documented aliens” just does not make sense — and would appear to unjustly discriminate against many GOOD Catholics from Mexico, Cuba, Ireland, France, Italy, Philippines and Latin American countries.

2nd point. Just being a “U.S. Citizen” should NOT be an adequate security criteria when it comes to the pope’s visit. If anything it is a totally meaningless criterion!

At a MINIMUM insist that “All volunteers must be Catholic U.S. citizens and at least 18 years old”. Yes, some might argue that that falls into religious discrimination. I am not sure. A Catholic is likely to have more scruples about doing harm to the pope — though even that is NOT a guarantee. Plus, how do you establish oneself as Catholic. SIMPLE. The same measure that Catholics use for everything else. A letter of commendation from YOUR Catholic diocese that YOU are a member in good standing. Simple. That this is not been insisted upon is a travesty.

Security is a major concern. They are already raising the fence around the Vatican Embassy in D.C. where the pope is likely to spend at least one night.

Security IS the REASON that the details of the pope’s visit is being kept vague by the U.S. authorities and the Vatican. They do not want to disclose anything, definitely not the exact dates, times and places. They will wait until the last possible minute. Understandable.

Just a heads up.
