Serious Cyber War, Ahead Of Election, Possibly Backed By Russia, Is Getting V. SERIOUS (& Ugly).

by Anura Guruge

This from today, Friday, October 21, 2016.

18 days ahead of the election.

This looks like a trial run, a warm-up.

SCARY.

As an ex-networking professional this, a large-scale attack on the Internet, is something I have worried about for a long time.

Yes, ‘they’ could cripple LARGE parts of the Internet. That could be serious.

Suddenly finding out that the Internet has gone BLACK.

This is SCARY.

This, to be fair, makes sense.

Our Poppy Day/Remembrance Day is to honor and remember the war dead — though by extension we use it also to honor and commemorate all past wars. The U.S. makes a distinction between its two holidays: Memorial Day (in May) & Veterans Day, 11/11. That is made clear in the first Q&A.

My problem. Enough Americans don’t wear Red Poppies either for Memorial Day or Veterans Day.

Google has NEVER done a Google Doodle for Memorial Day!

I guess it has to do with some kind of policy that they eschew anything associated with war and conflict.
I can understand and appreciate that to an extent.
But, I think Memorial Day transcends war though by definition it is holiday honoring U.S. war dead in all conflicts.

Google, however, does Google Doodles for Veteran’s Day
the difference being that that is a day to honor all those that have served (or are serving) with no connection to war.

Never mind the ‘Cinco de MayoGoogle Doodle. Google, as I pointed out last year, has never done one. Probably because it commemorates a war victory and Google prefers to stay clear of subject matter of that nature.

I like most Brits having nothing but undisguised admiration, respect and gratitude for the Gurkhas — who for so long have fought beside us.

I mentioned them in this post about British Commonwealth Troops in WW I (from which the Poppy Tradition arises) since they were such an integral force in that war — as in so many other wars.

So today I went in search of Gurkhas with Poppies pictures.
I lucked out. I am so happy.

From the ‘NepaliSamajUK.com’ photo gallery. Click to access. They have LOADS more pictures.

That this was Remembrance Day for ex-Gurkhas at Llanelli, Wales just made my day! Many don’t appreciate it, but I am Welsh. My underlying accent is not from Ceylon, it is a Ceylon accent modulated by Welsh. I spent 3 of my most riotous years of my life in Swansea, Wales. Llanelli wasn’t far away. I have been to Llanelli, visited the Rugby club and even more importantly was able to say ‘Llanelli’ correctly, saying like a true Welshman.

So this great, but I always associate Llanelli with greatness — not just on the rugby field.

For those of us who were in Britain, the Falkland’s War of 1982 was a very big, emotional deal. We so rooted for our Task Force and so bummed with the bloody frogs (even though my parents were living in Paris) for supplying the enemy with Exocet missiles. I was Customer Support Manager for ITT (UK) at the time and did a lot of driving from one customer site to another. I was glued to the news. So wanted to make sure we won. And what a party we threw the night we won. What a victory. It was a great time.
