The ‘OnePlus Watch’ Released Today Gets Absolutely & Utterly Panned — Thrashed! Wow.

by Anura Guruge

— & they are a respected outfit when it comes to gadgets.

Wow. I was NOT expecting that. As the reviewer herself notes, ‘OnePlus’ is noted for delivering very slick & comparatively affordable phones. So, this was a huge surprise.

I was curious about this watch. Though we have never owned a OnePlus phone I have read plenty of good reviews about them.

How can you get the step count off by more than 10,000. That is mind blowing.

As some of you know, I check the step counts on Garmins, Fitbits & OCCASIONALLY Polar & Amazfit. I expect to see some of them off by say 1%. This is damning. Didn’t they TEST. I am at a loss.

Why bother to release a watch if it has so many faults.

A whole team needs to be FIRED.

Well, that is that. I will not bother looking at this watch.

‘Apple Watch Series 5’ Looks Good, Of Course, & Attractively Priced — BUT Only Has 18-Hour Battery Life.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and read here. Links appear within image.

18-hour battery life still does not cut it. I would say you need, at a minimum, double that to make it competitive with the likes of say a Garmin.

But, at $400, it is attractively priced and, as always, looks impressive.

Not sure why Apple struggles so with battery life. Some folks are now getting 2-weeks.

But, this is good for us Garmin fans. We can still make fun and look down our noses at Apple Watch wearers.

I Am Now Backfilling For Garmin Customer Support On The Vivoactive 3.

by Anura Guruge

This was on my FacebookVivoactive 3‘ page today.

I get quite a few messages like this seeking customer support. First thing I do is point out that I am NOT Garmin. Then, if I can I try to help since I recall all the times I felt so helpless trying to get meaningful support from Garmin.

This was the 2nd Vivoactive 3 ‘HELP’ I had today.

It is a Sunday, so their chance of even contacting anybody at Garmin is ZERO.

This was a fairly easy one (at least for I, in that I had seen it before).

The date and time on the VA 3 was off — in this case by 9-days!

But, I knew that a sync with a phone or a GPS fix should cure that. And it did.

She, as you can see, was happy. That makes me HAPPY. Another good deed for the day.

IF Garmin had any sense they would hire me to provide real good weekend support. {Smile}

I Have Now Had My Fitbit Ionic For 59-Days; Longer Than Either Of The Garmin Vivoactive 3s.

by Anura Guruge

That I had it, and worn it, for 59-days does NOT mean that I like it or intend to keep it for much longer!

It’s ONLY redeeming feature has been that it has not died on me as did the Garmin Vivoactive 3s.

But, the Fitbit Ionic is not accurate. All the stats, especially heart rate, feels suspect. I think altitude/elevation is pure fabrication.

It is per the Lewis Carroll adage “that a watch that doesn’t work is better than one that is one-minute late, in that the one that is broken will tell the correct time twice a day” WORSE than one that is frozen.

I do NOT like the Fitbit Ionic. It has nothing going for it.

I am going to wear it till March 2, 2018 — just so that I can say I had it for 3-months. At that point I am getting another Garmin, now most likely a Garmin Forerunner 935. Why a Garmin. Because it gives me more data and does so on the watch. Plus, the FR 935 is rugged and proven.

Stay tuned. The sorry saga continues.

Tamlee Men’s Multifunction Digital Watches — Operating Instructions.

by Anura Guruge

I have seen folks, online, especially on Amazon, looking for the instructions for Tamlee watches (such as that shown above).

Since I had the instructions it was easy enough to scan, post and SHARE.

They are NOT the easiest to READ. Small print and and very poor print quality in a muddy brown. I have tried to improve on that by INVERTING the colors. IF you can ENLARGE the image it should be fine. Don’t blame me. I can only work with the original I have. Sorry. I had to use a magnifying glass to read the original.

Van Heusen Wrist Watch.

by Anura Guruge

During the 1990s and the early part of the new millennium the only non-white shirts that I would wear were ‘Van Heusen’.

I was a virtual shirt rack for them. My white shirts, which had to be french-cuffed and monogrammed were ‘Stafford‘, but there was this visceral attraction to anything from ‘Van Heusen’ when it came to colored shirts. It kind of became a ‘joke’. If there was a colored shirt that caught my eye, whether at a store or on somebody’s back, the chances were 90% or so that it would be a ‘Van Heusen’.

So, when I saw this CHEAP ‘Van Heusen’ watch at ‘Marshalls’ the other day, I had to get it. So, it became another Christmas present. Now that I gave my diamond-studded Rolex away, I need cheap watches to grace my brown wrists. I haven’t worn it yet. But I think I could get used to it.

Oh, it won’t be the watch I wear all the time. I currently have about 6 (maybe slightly more) cheap watches. I wear different ones as it suits my mood. That is one of the GOOD things about not having the Rolex. I don’t feel that I have to wear one watch all the time.

Samsung Confirms That Smart Devices Will Spy On You — Big Brother Watching YOU!

by Anura Guruge

This is exactly what I was referring to when I said, on Monday of this week, that I had MAJOR privacy concerns when it came to the Amazon ECHO that was advertised during the Super Bowl.

As somebody who has been actively involved in computers for 47 years (yes, since 1969) I have a good grasp of what the technology can do and what vendors are likely to do with that technology.

That smart devices go out of their way to collect data on us is not knew. I first subscribed to satellite TV 24 years ago. Of course that meant I had to have a settop box that had a phone connection — supposedly so that I could PPTV. But the guy who installed the system told me, kindly, that the main reason for having the phone connection was so that all of the channels that I had surfed through could be uploaded, at 2 am in the morning, on a regular basis — on the pretext that diagnostics were being performed on the box and that new software was being downloaded. That was 1992.

Obviously any smart device that offers voice commands MUST listen to everything going on so that in can pickup its name. This was my concern with Amazon’s ECHO. Having an Internet-connected device, with a sensitive mike, in the middle of our living area listening to everything that was going on. What a boon for Amazon.

Yes, as is the case with Samsung, in theory, they need to cover this in their published privacy policy. But that is just in theory.

So be warned. Be aware. Be very afraid. Big brother is watching you and listening to you. Any internet connected device with a camera and mike can spy on you without you realizing it. SMILE.

As I mentioned in this post I am a HUGE fan of LEGO and have been for nearly 25 years — i.e., since Danielle was about 2 years old. I would buy BIG fancy LEGO kits and build them for her — and I remember this really great (and large) Miami Police Boat — while she watched. All 4 kids went onto become LEGO aficionados — with I ever happy to aid their interest. Devanee and Teischan are still into LEGO — Teischan right now making her daily advent calendar (for 2015). I like LEGO too — though in my old age I don’t indulge that often and only do BIG kits.

Well, as I describe in detail in this post, I was very FORTUNATE to get an UNOPENED LEGO Sopwith Camel (#3451) kit at the 2009 ‘Alton Town Wide Yard Sale‘ for $3! As I pointed out I did intimate to the lady that it was a collectible BUT she was HAPPY to get rid of it for $3. Well unopened kits were selling on eBay, at the time, for ~$250 and Deanna wanted me to list it. That never happened. I built it and it had pride of place in our semi-formal sitting room.

About 6 weeks ago Teischan who was trying to measure the length of the wall (in that room) knocked it off its perch and it broke into about 400 pieces. Pieces were all over and given ALL the heavy furniture in that room we knew that we would not be able to find them all!

I was devastated. I was not happy. Checked eBay. Unopened boxes were now going for $450. I was NOT going to pay that much. Found two ‘kits in pieces‘ — both around $90 each. I only needed one to get me the pieces I was missing. But being who I am I could NOT resist getting BOTH — so that I could have two MODELS. Remember what I have said about myself before. I have a great will power, I can resist ANYTHING but TEMPTATION.

So we ended up with three kits in pieces, and I still had the instruction book (and box — with the $3 sticker) from my original. Given that she broke it and she is quite a proficient LEGOist I coerced Teischan into trying to build one of them for me. She, to her credit, persevered for days. But this puppy is very finicky to say the least — and it does say 12+, and Teischan is still 9.

In the end I built them. One of the kits, from e-bay, was 70 assembled. So that was pretty easy.

So now I have two Sopwith Camels and a box full of spare parts. I haven’t checked to see how much I can build with the leftover parts. Maybe I could build a CRASHED Camel!

Well, one Camel is back in the sitting room and I have the other on ONE of my TOY SHELVES. Yes, MY TOY shelves. I have about 6 of those with genuine toys. Unlike other adults I can’t afford ADULT toys. All I can are old kids toys and that amuses I.

It was an e-mail from Hammacher Schlemmer (and I get near daily e-mails from them though I haven’t bought anything from them for years) Friday morning that tipped me off about these watches. Here is a fragment from that e-mail.

Just out of curiosity I checked Amazon since I was pretty sure that the Lego watch was unlikely to me exclusive to Hammacher Schlemmer. I was right. Amazon had both the Lego and the Rosewood Watch (or one pretty damn close to it).

I am a HUGE fan of Lego. I have been buying Lego for 25 years — no-stop — since Danielle (now 26) was about 2 years old. In a given year I easily spend a few hundred dollars on Lego — and invariably think it is money well spent. BUT I hated the Lego movie and this watch, at $165 ($14 cheaper at Amazon than at H-M), leaves me cold. As with the movie I think Lego could have done much better.

The Sandalwood watch is a whole other proposition. It looks cool. The Amazon description says that the wood will ‘wear’ and acquire an even cooler patina with wear. Wow. Am I tempted. Yes. BUT I do NOT need another watch. Like cameras I can get carried away with watches. I have at least 6 right now and at best only wear 3. My main watch is 26 years old. I am OK with it. SMILE. So no I am not getting this wooden watch. Just wanted to draw YOUR attention to it.

From everything that I have seen on TV about the Apple iWatch it is going to be MUCH MORE distracting that a smartphone.

People driving around, especially on I-93 (or equivalent) with an iWatch on their wrist SCARES me. This is NOT FUNNY.

I am pretty sure that the cell phone ban that comes into play on July 1, 2015 in New Hampshire will NOT cover smart watches.

Something has to be done.

I dread that we will get the first Apple iWatch related traffic fatality this weekend — within 48 hours of it becoming available. That is not a pleasant thought. It could be somebody that YOU or I know!

Not an easy problem to solve. This is more serious than DWI!
