This must have occurred to Jeff Bezos. I had already talked about this way back in October 2015.

Makes a lot of sense and there are some amazing synergies when it comes to artificial intelligence (AI) (and IBM’s Watson), Cloud plays & server technologies. Plus, Amazon can tap into IBM’s still lucrative revenue streams from software licensing, product leasing and maintenance contracts. Plus, IBM still must have some choice real estate in places that should suit Amazon.

Amazon’s Market Cap is 2.4 times that of IBM’s.

I would have to think that a majority of IBM shareholders would be happy to get 1 share of AMZN for every 4.5 shares of IBM. That would put the sell price at around $177. Yes, the lack of a dividend will gall some, BUT AMZN’s amazing growth should be a compensation.

Yes, I would benefit from this in multiple ways. Yes, I am a long-term AMZN shareholder and this deal will make AMZN even sweeter down the road. Plus it will bring the two halves of my adult life nicely together. IBM was my life for 36-years. I am only ‘here’ because of IBM. A few years after I stopped doing IBM stuff, I bought into AMZN. I am NOW on;y ‘here’ because of AMZN. So, this will be perfect from my perspective.

I really do NOT get it.

IBM seems all at sea.

It just doesn’t seem to be able to get anything right these days.

This video commercial was so sexist. As a father of three daughters and an ex-IBMer I am pretty amazed that MY IBM no longer had the smarts to see that this was going to offend the very target audience they were trying to woo.

Last month they bought Weather Channel assets saying that needed that for their Cloud Computing initiative. Now this.

Has it got anything to do with the current CEO? I am just asking.

I get the impression that IBM is being run by the 85-year old Warren Buffett who has admitted he is not much into computers.

This DOES NOT make sense.

This sounds REALLY dumb.

Of all the things that IBM could have gainfully spent its money on — weather forecasting ‘technology’? Somebody has a screw loose.

YES, I am huge believer in Watson.

IF this acquisition is to HELP Watson did IBM executives ask Watson what he thought about it (and let’s not even go there, since ‘Watson’ is named after the Watsons he has to be MALE)?

I get a feeling that rather than ask Watson they asked Bob Dylan — Watson’s new spokesman.

This does NOT make me happy. This actually makes me livid.

As an ex-IBMer, who managed to make a modest living for nearly 40 years on my knowledge of all things IBM, I still bleed blue when cut. IF you don’t understand that expression, YOU should not be dabbling in anyway with IBM, once “Big Blue” — now “Middling Blue“.

Aaaahhhh!

IBM. Funny this. I actually made a comment on IBM mainframes on Facebook yesterday and a few people like it.

While IBM’s results continue to confound and contract, Amazon and Google are riding high.

To hear Amazon described as a TECH GIANT cracks me up (and partly because I am an Amazon shareholder and as such have not been able to stop smiling all day).

Amazon’s market cap is now more than TWICE that of poor IBM.

Amazon is better positioned to truly exploit the AI magic of ‘Watson‘ than IBM.

Think about it. Amazon already uses some sophisticated AI to tell us, daily, as to what we should be buying next. Amazon with Watson will rule the World.

Amazon probably does NOT need IBM’s much vaunted, by increasingly long in the tooth, server technology. But it and Google should divi it up.

Don’t for a SECOND think that this is a strange suggestion and that pigs will fly before this will happen.

Remember, remember Wang and DEC from the 1980s. In 1984, Wang was 2nd to IBM in computer revenues. Today it is GONE. GONE. GONE.

DEC for so long was a GIANT, slightly dwarfed by IBM. Today is a buried, forgotten, somewhere inside HP!

So this is not off the charts.

Just remember who told you about this first — on Friday, October 23, 2015, a day when AMZN shares were up 6% on the DAY. SMILE.

IBM, IF It Has Any Sense, Would Resurrect ‘Grid Computing’ To Augment ‘Cloud Computing’.

IBM ‘RedBook’ on ‘Grid Computing’ from 2005. It is still on IBM’s Website. Click image to access (the PDF).

gridanu23424

Click to ENLARGE and read. First two pages of a book I started to write in 2004, with encouragement from IBM, on ‘Grid & Autonomic Computing’. I was glad I managed to find a copy on this PC after 11 years!

Cloud Computing‘, nebulous as it is, is the latest IT ‘very hip’, ‘ultra-cool’ buzzword — in the same league as some of those from the past, such as XML, ATM (for Asynchronous Transfer Mode), OSI and OS/2.

95% of those that glibly bandy the term ‘Cloud Computing’ have absolutely no idea what it means! It is the hip term to drop. ‘Cloud Computing’ is a the latest way to describe a decades old methodology, i.e., server-centric processing and storage. ‘Cloud Computing’ as such is NOT new, not by a long chalk.

‘Cloud Computing’, at IBM, is just the latest of a long list of futile, high burn projects that IBM never was able to capitalize on. Everybody else may have forgotten, BUT I still remember Nways. And I also remember SAA, Liza (no, no, not that one), NetView.

And then there was ‘Grid Computing‘. ‘Grid Computing’ makes sense and is more relevant TODAY than it has ever been.

Google and Amazon understand that and they have now stolen IBM’s march on ‘Grid Computing’ — though way back in 2002 – 2005, this was IBM’s bailywick.

‘Grid Computing’, see MY definition above, goes hand-in-hand with ‘Cloud Computing’. It is a way to make ‘Cloud’ more efficient and as such cost-effective.

IBM, if it had any sense, would resurrect its Grid initiatives. IF they can’t remember what they are they should give me a call.

Grid …

That is what can SAVE IBM.

Remember, in July, I already told you that IBM revenues would continue to decline.

This commercial was on CNBC this morning around 10 am (Eastern). Deanna called me out of the bathroom to (rewind the DVR) and watch it.

Inspired!

Cute.

In my eyes Bob Dylan can do no wrong. I am a huge, ‘life long’ fan. We saw him, at ‘Meadowbrook‘, 2nd row seats, c. 2004. Deanna hates him with a passion. And that could be the issue with this commercial.

It will resonate with folks of my vintage — and most of those do have ‘C’ titles. That is good. But the problem is that 95% of corporate IT is now being done, time never standing still, by folks of Deanna’s age and younger. Dylan doesn’t mean much to them. And that really is the BIG problem that has besetted IBM for the last decade. Never mind Dylan, the name ‘IBM’ holds no significance, let alone reverence, to the current crop of IT professionals.

Think IBM “Think” signs sits in front of my keyboard even as I now type. It was given to me during my first week at IBM in August 1974. One of the FEW things from that era that I still have. But I also have one of my original S/370 reference cards and a few IBM flowcharting templates!

The days of ‘you can’t get fired for choosing IBM’ are long gone and in reality it is now a case of ‘you can most certainly get fired for choosing IBM’.

I have to confess, though he does smile, Dylan does look scary in this commercial. Deanna opined that she was not surprised that he looks so bad that ‘given that he must be in his 80s’! How unkind. I said I didn’t think he was that old and that he has to be in his 70s. I just looked. Born May 24, 1941, Robert Allen Zimmerman, in Duluth, Minnesota. So he is 74.

Bob Dylan is 17 years OLDER than IBM (which came to be known by that name as of February 14, 1924). THINK about that.

watsonhealthcloudasas

I am already on record in stating that IBM’s ‘Watson‘ technology is the new jewel in its now slightly tarnished crown. ‘Watson’ is the future. Mainframes, at long last, the past.

I am sure that Watson has the potential to do much to enhance medicine and healthcare in the decades to come.

But knowing IBM as well as I do, I am not convinced right now, that IBM has the wherewithal and the will to make this ‘Watson Health Cloud‘ into anything meaningful. Yes, it will, of course, do specific, carefully crafted “party tricks” — but those aren’t going to get anybody far. Basically what I am trying to say is that we are unlikely to see this Health Cloud deliver useful, germane results for many years to come. Watson does have the technology analyze huge quantities of data BUT we still don’t know the right questions to ask. And that is going to take some time to work out how to best exploit what Watson can deliver. In the meantime Watson Health Cloud could end up becoming what they refer to as ‘High Level Flannel’ — i.e., a nice fluffy feeling without much substance behind it. Think ‘fluff’ and appropriately we in this case are also talking Cloud.

So this is my fear. IBM is going, through financial and marketing necessity, try to make this Cloud impress. But it is not going to ready. It will do, as I said, before some ‘party tricks’. People might get disillusioned with it before it gets a chance to mature and be productive.

And heaven help IBM if there is a data breach as happened to Anthem. IBM will, of course, have better security than bumbling Anthem, but you cannot always protect against insiders who are bought off!

So, I am happy to see this initiative, I just hope IBM doesn’t rush it.
