Think – Today: Why Is The Amazon River Called As Such?

by Anura Guruge

amazonrivermap-svgVery simple. The huge river in South America — the Amazon. Why is it called that?

Think first, then research, then THINK again. Think for the pleasure of thinking.

Yesterday’s ‘Think’What happens to the fat that you lose/burn during dieting. It is expelled from the body in the form of Carbon Dioxide and water (mainly in sweat and urine). There can also sometimes be some Ketones that are expelled — that produces bad breath. This YouTube video explains more and is quite entertaining.

Think – Today: When You Diet What Happens To The Weight You Shed?

by Anura Guruge

fatSay you lost 5 pounds. Shed 5 pounds. There is the expression about ‘burning fat’. Where does the weight we lose go? How do we shed it. It doesn’t come off in chunks.

Yesterday’s ‘Think’Plastic oven bags are made from a high-melting point NYLON (or polymer). They are FDA approved. The bags can melt, but not at the below 400° F temperatures they are meant to be used. The 2 tablespoons of flour, per ‘Reynolds’ who make such bags is for blending the fat and juices released during the roasting to protect the bags from bursting.

Losing 20 Pounds In Body Weight Has Really Done A Job On My Swimming Buoyancy.

I have to admit that I am still rattled by the lack of buoyancy I discovered, to my cost, on Sunday when I went swimming.

Wow. I have been doing some research. It appears that I have lost about 2 pounds of lift. That doesn’t sound much but that is about 40% of the buoyancy required to keep a person afloat.

The biggest thing I noticed was that I was floating vertically! That was scary. But, now it makes total sense — and this diagram shows it all.

Most of the 20 pounds of fat came off my waist and a bit off my chest.

Having that fat on my waist previously lifted my waist up so that I was horizontal. Now without that fat, my lower body sinks.

I am sure that I will get used to this.

Divers know about this. When they lose weight they reduce the amount of free weights they use.

But, I am not sure whether this issue is ever talked about in normal weight loss discussions. This could be dangerous. Somebody who has say lost 50 pounds might think that he/she can now swim better and dive in — without realizing that they are going to experience one heck of a shock.

P1030793As I said in the above post I typically plan to go for my first swim in the lake around mid-June — a ritual since I moved to the NH Lakes Region in 1992.

It was too cold for me at the end of June.

Then we had the brutally hot weather. It was probably warm enough a few days ago, but we were not around.

Today was the first day we had gone to the beach in nearly a week.

We had all been working in the yard and were anxious to go in the water. The temp. was just right. It was not cold.

It was nice to be in the water, though I have discovered another downside to losing 20 pounds since last Summer. I am less buoyant. I noticed it right away. Plus my physics is good enough that I worked it out while I was swimming. Deanna did believe me. So I checked it out. I was right. Link 1 & link 2. Less heavy, less fat, less buoyant and I could feel it right away. That Teischan decided to climb on my shoulders while I was swimming vividly pointed out that I can’t support her weight.
