A Cheese Story That Seems A Tad Too Cheesy.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. Story from the U.K. “Daily Mail”, Sept. 3, 2018.

Regular readers of this blog will know that I LOVE — no, ADORE — cheese. I could live on cheese. I never tire of eating cheese. I ATE a LOT of cheese, each and every day.

But, for the last three weeks, since my dreaded annual physical (with my Indian doctor) I have laid off the cheese.

My physical, as ever, was a nightmare — more so this year since I had put on MORE weight since last year. My doctor gave me heck. I have to lose weight … ideally 20 pounds. That is not going to be easy. But, I am going to try. So, for a start I gave up cheese. In the last three weeks all I have had is ONE (1) thin slice of American white! That is it. Have NOT lost any weight, though. If anything I probably gained some.

So, this story was music to my eyes! But, I am not that gullible. There is method to my madness. I appreciate that cheese in moderation probably will do you no harm, but I am skeptical that large quantities of cheese will do you good. I could, however, be wrong. Alas, I can’t put this to the test. Too much to lose — so to speak. I can’t take any chances. I have to try and lose some weight.

But, I wanted to share this with you.

REUSING Amazon Packaging Rather Than Recycling The Boxes — A PROPOSAL.

by Anura Guruge

Recycling boxes, i.e., cardboard, though better than just throwing it away, is extremely inefficient and costly in terms of energy.

The boxes are RE-PULPED then reconstituted again as paper or cardboard. That is wasteful.

It would so much better just to reuse the boxes as many of us do …

We also reuse boxes when we do returns.

So, why can’t we have a scheme where we can RETURN Amazon boxes to a Post Office.

USPS can send them back to an Amazon Fulfillment Center. In many cases they will be sending trucks to Amazon EMPTY — to pick up new loads of deliveries. So, this will make those trips more productive.

I cannot see why Amazon and USPS could NOT be able to get this to work. Yes, there will be some initial costs but Amazon will quickly be in the BLACK. Boxes are expensive, even for Amazon.

It is possible that there might be some Amazon customers who are squeamish about having things delivered in USED boxes, though to be fair you never know where a box has been. I have got plenty of Amazon boxes with cuts, tears and stains.

Yes, maybe Amazon could irradiate the returned boxes to appease all.

And, then there is another option. It can be part of your SHIPPING PREFERENCES. Amazon could give you a small DISCOUNT for checking an option saying “Will Accept Reused Boxes”.

I am sure consumer will buy into this. We take the cardboard to be recycled. So, taking it to a post office will not be that different.

I really would like Amazon to think about this.

What do YOU think?

Amazon Packaging Is Socially Irresponsible!

by Anura Guruge

A set of 4 TINY watch straps pins
that I received today!

EXACTLY as it arrived.

Nothing removed, nothing rearranged. Untouched.

There was NO packing. Nothing to break.

This was it.

The little packed had slipped under the bottom flaps!

The ITEM!

This is irresponsible.

I just could NOT believe it. I knew what was inside. I was expecting it.

This is BEYOND crazy.

A tiny package of unbreakable stuff. It should have gone in a padded envelope.

This makes me very upset and annoyed — especially as an Amazon shareholder.

UPDATE

I tweeted this post and copied Amazon. They responded.
They have a PACKAGING FEEDBACK process — here is the link.
I used it. Pretty neat.

Send them the pictures and feedback. Now YOU know.

Amazon Still Profligate In Its Packaging.

This is CRAZY.

This is irresponsible.

It was not fragile. There was nothing to break. These could have been easily shipped in a padded envelope.

Waste of resources. Yes, the air doesn’t weigh much BUT the box takes up space on planes, trucks and in the USPS vehicles. Plus the cardboard (which, to be fair, we recycle).

I have complained before about Amazon (as you can see below), and I do so as HUGE fan, a loyal customer and above all a very-happy shareholder (of AMZN).

UPS, cleverly, tried to get Amazon to be better by changing their pricing to include package DIMENSIONS as well as weight. Well, Amazon doesn’t use UPS that much, anymore! This was sent via USPS.

I Got A Garmin Vivoactive HR Activity/Fitness Tracker.

by Anura Guruge

So, I got a Garmin Vivoactive HR from Best Buy on Wednesday, June 14, 2017. I chose this model for the Heart Rate Monitor and GPS — though I have yet to work out how to use the GPS. I bought in from Best Buy, rather than Amazon, because I used a bunch of Reward Points which meant that I didn’t have to pay much for this tracker. But NOT buying anything from Best Buy again — especially since I used up all my Reward Points.

On May 25, 2017, I had got Deanna a FitBit Alta HR.

I did NOT get a FitBit because I have never had much luck with FitBits — whether with their devices or their STOCK! I had reluctantly bought some FIT shares, right after the IPO, because a then 14-year old shamed me into doing so, he being extremely gung-ho.

I am not new to fitness trackers. The first FitBit I bought was at Christmas 2011.

But after I threw my original FitBit away I had lost interest and was not following the technology.

Then in mid-May we had Shane Selling my exceptional computer guy and Drone whizard. Of late Shane has become a fitness fanatic and is extremely fit. He was wearing a FitBit Alta HR. First time I had been up close to a FitBit in 5 years. I was vaguely impressed. Deanna more so.

Shane, the nice guy he is, took his FitBit off his wrist and put it on mine.

I was IMMEDIATELY shocked by how high my heart rate was! I nearly had a heart attack. It was in the 80s. It should not have been.

That is when I decided that I need to get an activity tracker with heart rate monitoring.

I got Deanna a FitBit Alta HR the next day BUT spent 2 weeks researching the technology. Hence the Garmin for I.

I need to get back into shape and LOSE SOME WEIGHT! I am borderline obese and not happy about that. Oh YES, I have been MUCH HEAVIER but I am not proud of that.

It is helping. A LONG WAY TO GO.

Ironically, because of my ‘Day-Off Schedule’, some school appointments and rain I have NOT gone for a run since I got the Garmin. That will get rectified tomorrow.

I will keep you posted.

Please, Please Remind Me Never To Buy Anything Again From Bloody Best Buy!

Anura Guruge FitBit Garmin Best Buy

Having gone for 5-years without one I have yet again decided to get a Fitness/Activity tracker. I am extremely unfit and borderline obese and really need to do something about it. I have my dreaded annual physical in a couple of months and the doctor is going to yet again, as they do every year, crucify me. More on all of this later when I actually start wearing the tracker.

I was an adopter and fan of FitBit having got the first one at Christmas 2011. But, then we had lots of issues with it. There are LOTS of FitBit posts here, on this blog, if you want to read about the whole sorry saga. FitBit was new to the market and they really did want to help and fix the problems. I think they send us a total of 3 FREE FitBits to appease my displeasure.

I am NOT getting a FitBit, though I did get one for Deanna, from Amazon, two weeks ago. I am getting an Garmin.

I had quite a few unused Best Buy Reward Points from when we bought the refrigerator in April.

So, rather than ordering it from Amazon, as is my wont, I decided to get it from BB and use the points — because that way it was nearly free.

I was supposed to go to Concord on Thursday for a meeting, and as such agreed to a store pickup in Concord. All of that was fine.

The meeting was postponed to next week.

I am going to be in Portsmouth tomorrow. So, I thought it would be a simple deal to have them change the PICK UP.

Oh, BLOODY NO! They essentially have to cancel the order and start again — with a credit back to my credit card etc. 3-4 days for the whole transaction to finish.

My fault. But, it is OK.

I will never have enough reward points to want me to order anything from this accursed company.

Now I will have to make a trip just to pick up the Garmin.

Pope Francis ‘Dancing’ To Jewish Hasidic Song At The Vatican On May 8, 2017 — VIDEO.

by Anura Guruge

OK. More ‘swaying’ than ‘dancing’.

Click here to access article in
The Jerusalem Post
that explains it all.

Let’s be fair. He is now 80-years old and is known to have bad feet — that requires that he wears heavy, ‘orthopedic’-type shoes. He also suffers from sciatica and we won’t mention his weight issues since becoming pope.

In his youth, he was, however, quite the rake. He was a BOUNCER at a nightclub, was an avid soccer player and had a girlfriend.

This is still cute. Enjoy.

I Had No Idea That They Delivered Large Refrigerator/Freezers Using Just Shoulder Harnesses.

Click pictures to ENLARGE.

Attribution WILL be enforced.

This was the Samsung, from Best Buy, we had delivered — to replace a 13 month old GE. Click to ENLARGE. 289 pounds.

I can’t honestly remember the last time I saw a refrigerator being delivered. Can’t even remember the last time I bought one or have one that needed replacing. All the many houses I have bought over the years came with appliances.

Ditto for this current house which we bought 10 years and 1 month ago.

Yes, 10 years and 1 month ago — and last week the GE Fridge/Freezer decided that it was time for its planned obsolescence. I have since discovered that the lifespan of a ‘modern’ fridge is 8 – 10 years, whereas older ones would last 30 years or more. That would explain why I can’t remember ever buying a new fridge.

I wondered how they were going to take out the old GE (for a $15 fee) and bring in the new 289 pound Samsung.

I had visions of dollies and ramps such that those used by movers.

When I didn’t see a dolly I actually JOKED without ever realizing how close I would be by saying: “what are you going to do, throw it on your back and carry it in?” He replied: “yep, pretty much”.

And he wasn’t joking.

Never seen anything like this. Damn impressive.

But I am NOT sure whether it is safe, wise or advisable.

We also learned that they get no special training as such about avoiding back injury and other damage.

I also learned that they might do 6 such deliveries a day.

Wow.

Yes, definitely quicker and easier than using a dolly, BUT I can see the potential for disaster.

I am surprised that this is permitted. They are taking quite the risk.

Why I Despair So About The Schools Around Here.

by Anura Guruge

This was an actual sheet from Grade 5 ‘Science’ that
Teischan (10) brought home from Alton Central School (ACS),
Alton, New Hampshire this week.

I normally don’t say anything about ‘slip-ups’ other than maybe draw
Teischan’s attention to it … and say “this is not exactly right”.

But, this was BEYOND the pale.

teischanlbs10232016

Click to ENLARGE and hopefully stare at in HORROR.

There are so many things wrong with this at SO many levels.

First and foremost, EVERY SINGLE answer written down by my Teischan is wrong!

Yes, every SINGLE answer is WRONG.

And she gets a “SMILEY” face?

I wanted to cry.

No comments? No corrections?

That is what got my goat. EVERY SINGLE answer is wrong!

No it is NOT her multiplication.

She only got ONE of those wrong and it is so blatant that a semi-proficient 4th grader would see it.

So now we have ALL the ANSWERS are wrong PLUS one multiplication is wrong.

There is an asterisk (*) next to ‘Pluto‘. Can you see that?

What does that asterisk (*) pertain to?

The title says “What is your weight on each planet?

Well, ‘Pluto’ is NOT a planet though ACS has historically had issues coming to terms with that. See this … IF you are interest. But, I am willing to concede that that is probably what the asterisk (*) was meant to be.

But the second line says “Outer Space”. “Outer Space” is NOT a planet! There is NO asterisk (*) against it.

Yes, one of my many faults is that I am a terrible pedant. I put a lot of stock in accuracy.

I am sure that I have read that you should never give kids printed statements that are factually incorrect …

But that is minor in the scheme of this.

Yes, this upset me.

Yes, of course, I am fully aware that to err is human and erring is something that I do daily. But, I expect a little diligence from my teachers.

NO, I rarely criticize teachers. This is probably the first time in 5 years! Yes, I cut school administrators no slack, BUT I try not to criticize teachers.

But, this incident aggrieves me on another front. This science teacher is one of a triumvirate that unilaterally decided that ACS Grade 5 should not have ANY math or science homework. Just 4 days ago, I told them, to their face, that MAYBE they decided on that because that meant less things for them to MARK.

Well, I guess ‘MARKING’ is not their strong suit. I guess I should just SMILE. Draw a BIG SMILEY face.

And for the record. I teach. I have taught. My mother was a teacher. My father was a teacher. Two of my aunties were teachers. Our name, ‘Guruge’, literally means: ‘from the house of the teacher’. So I kind of know a little about this and definitely have skin in the game.

Let me again STRESS.

I would NOT have said ANYTHING about this sheet if there were ONLY three or four things wrong on it.

But when there are fourteen (14) mistakes on it I feel the need to vent.

P.S., Teischan has NO IDEA what ‘lb’ stands for!

More Bad News For Carbs. Now Thought To Cause Lung Cancer!

by Anura Guruge

Click here to access the U.K. “Daily Mail” original
from March 7, 2016.

Click image to ENLARGE and enjoy here.

carbscancer45523424

I dramatically cut back on carbs 3 years and 2 months ago. So for the last 38 months I have had NO bread (of any type or color), no rice (whatsoever), no bagels, no muffins, no donuts, no pizza (other than a few pizza bites), no pasta, no cakes, no pies, no ice cream, no puddings, no desserts! Yes, I lost some weight.

That is NOT to say I do not ingest carbs. That would be impossible. Plus I worked out that I need some amount of carbs, if nothing else to keep my digestive tract somewhat appeased (though I can tell you (for free) that low carb diets wreak havoc on your stomach especially when you are old (as am I)). I still have my mandatory, medicinal DAILY glass of red wine. That has carbs. I eat Activia yogurt (because it is supposed to help with my stomach). That has lots of carbs. I eat one cup of oatmeal a day — again for my stomach (along with quite a bit of Metamucil). So I do ingest a fair amount of carbs and of late I am PUTTING ON WEIGHT, however hard I try. C’est la vie.

Not sure whether I believe this study. But wanted to share it with you for what it is worth.
