Labor Day On September 7, Though ‘Late’, Is NOT Unusual.

by Anura Guruge

September 7 seems late. Yes, I invariably think of Labor Day as falling around September 3 or 4. BUT, it can fall from September 1 to September 7. It can’t be any earlier or later. First Monday of September. So, 1 to 7.

It fell on September 7 just 5-years ago. Yes, in 2015.

Also in 2009. So, this is the 3rd time since 2020.

The usual gap is 5- or 6-years. Then Leap Years kick in and throw it off for a 11-year gap. Those 11-year gaps are common in calendaring. It has to do with the 4-years between Leap Years & the 7 days in a week.

Anywho …

September 7 is not an anomaly. It happens quite often. 9 times in the last 56-years. That is an average of every 6.2-years.

OK? Cool? SMILE.

How exciting. Another ‘Leap Day‘. At best, if we are lucky, we get them every 4-years. But, as you can see above, they will not get a ‘Leap Day‘ in 2100. Some of YOU might be around for that. Not that far ahead.

Last ‘Leap Day’, obviously, was 4-years ago, to the DAY, in 2016.

Got to go back a fair ways to find when the last ‘Leap Day’ was on a Saturday. Wow. 1992. I remember 1992. My son was born in May of that year.

There will be a fair amount of interest this year since Chanukah/Hanukkah First Night, falls on Christmas Eve.

That is special. Only the 4th time it has fallen on Christmas Even since 1900.

Chanukah/Hanukkah First Night can also fall on Christmas Day, as it did in 2005 and will again in 2024.

But, given the 8-day span of Chanukah/Hanukkah this ‘Chrismukkah’ conjunction can happen any time Chanukah/Hanukkah falls December 18th and Christmas day.

This has happened 33 times since 1900 to 2016: 1902, 1905, 1908, 1910, 1913, 1916, 1921, 1924, 1927, 1932, 1935, 1940, 1943, 1946, 1951, 1954, 1959, 1962, 1965, 1970, 1973, 1978, 1981, 1984, 1989, 1992, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2011 & 2016.

It will happen 20 times between next year and 2099: 2019, 2022, 2024, 2027, 2030, 2035, 2038, 2046, 2049, 2054, 2057, 2065, 2068, 2073, 2076, 2084, 2087, 2092, 2095 & 2098.

You don’t have to wait long. Next one is in but 3 years! 2019.

The PayPal spinoff from eBay takes place at ‘midnight’ this Friday, July 17, 2015. But the ‘ex-div’ date is July 20.

So you can still buy eBay shares TODAY, Wednesday, July 15, 2015, and get the PayPal spinoff — PYPLV.

PYPLV is ‘trading’ now BUT there are NO shares available. So you are essentially pre-buying the shares!

I owned a few eBay from years back. So I will get some PYPLV on Monday whether I want them or not. I want them. I actually just bought a couple more eBay shares. Way I see it, it is the best way to get into PYPLV.

The split on Monday will be ‘dollar-for-dollar’. Both eBay and PYPLV are trading. So if eBay on Monday is $66 and PYPLV is at $34 — after the split PYPLV will remain (for a few nanoseconds) at $34 and eBay will start off at $32. Essentially OLD $eBay = NEW $eBay + $PYPLV. Got that?

It is funny isn’t it how we take certain things for granted and give no thought to how they came to be. Though I am known to ponder many aspects of life until yesterday I had never given any thought to when I STARTED using built in cup holders.

Today I rarely go anywhere without coffee or tea in an insulated mug — and the normal one I use, which I got from the camping section in a Walmart, is HUGE. But until yesterday I never had given thought to all the thousands of miles I had driven, prior to the mid-1990s, in cars that did not have built-in cup holders.

It all came to a head yesterday afternoon when I took the new 1989 Jag XJS to fill her up (given that with her notoriously thirsty petrol consumption habits I wasn’t sure how far we could really go and gas gauges on all British cars are known to be extremely fickle). Since it was afternoon, it was time for my cups of tea — caffeinated and decaf. So I made myself one and took the precaution of putting it in a small insulated mug, as opposed to my giant mug, because I knew that IF the XJS had cup holders they would be for normal size cups — as is, ironically, the case in the 2002 XJ8. But I had feeling that the XJS might not have cup holders. So I sent Devanee, who was coming with me (since she hates not going in ‘her’ cars), to check. She confirmed my worst fears. No cup holders. No big deal. She already knew the drill. No cup holders — she becomes my automated cup holder. She is getting good at it. She holds it, more or less at the right height, without spilling it and puts it into my hand, with the right orientation, when I reach out. She does have her uses, which is good.

Got me thinking. The thousands and thousands of miles I MUST have driven in cars with no cup holders and NEVER gave it a thought. Scary. 1980 to 1983 I was driving 500 to 2,000 miles a week. As customer support manager for ITT Data Systems UK that was my job. Visiting customers all around the country. I had a company car and unlimited petrol (and for that matter an unlimited expense account). I drove. In the UK it did not make sense to fly (especially if you drove like WE (i.e., the professional company car drivers did)). I must have been in the car for 40 hours a week — EASY. But I am sure, though they were all mid- to top-tier company cars of that era (e.g., 2L Ford Cortinas, Rovers etc.) that they did not have cup holders. It also meant that I did NOT drink coffee, tea or soda while I drove. I AM GLAD ABOUT THAT. Because with all the driving that I did I would have drunk way too much caffeine, sweetener and dairy. So it really was sobering.

I can’t now believe how blasé I am about my coffee or tea while driving. As of yesterday I am never going to take it for granted.

Rejoice! Jump For Joy. The Winter Solstice Is Upon Us. 6:12 AM On December 21, 2012 In New Hampshire.

Winter Solstice animation.

Tomorrow is the shortest day of the year for those of us living in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the Winter Solstice, also referred to as the ‘Southern Solstice’ (because the South Pole faces the Sun) and for obvious reasons ‘December Solstice’.

On the day of the Winter Solstice the Sun, at noon, will be at its lowest point above the horizon for the year — it will also rise at the furthest point Southeast it ever reaches during the year. The sunset that day will also be at the most Southerly point.

The Winter Solstice was a very important day in olden times. On this day the Sun God (Sol) had to be beseeched not to abandon the world, but to come back to start another year … It was one of the most important holidays of the year. ‘Christmas Revels‘ is a celebration of how various cultures dealt with this pivotal day of the year. In the 4th Century Christian leaders morphed the Solstice holiday into becoming Christmas.

sunsetsunriseDec2012
If you want to be pedantic, ‘solstice’ per se refers to the exact moment when the Earth ‘turns the corner’ in its orbit around the Sun. It is the exact moment when the South Pole is at its closest to the Sun for that orbit. That exact moment is fleeting. Less than a minute. It will occur tomorrow, December 21, 2012, at 11:12 AM G.M.T. For us in New Hampshire, 5 hours behind G.M.T., it will thus occur at 6:12 AM. But, we tend to call the whole day, which could fall on the 20th or 22nd of December, though the 21st is the most common, ‘Winter Solstice’.

Note that the increase in the length of the (or the decrease leading up to the Solstice) is a bit jerky varying between 4 and 5 seconds a day in the above chart. This amount changes over the year. But, the inconsistency remains. It is also worth noting that the increase in the length of the day is not evenly split between sunrise and sunset. There is always some level of asymmetry. January 4, 2013 to January 5, 2015, we gain a whole minute, but the sun rise time is the same for both days. That whole minute has to do with the sun set shifting from 4:24 pm to 4:25 pm (in Concord, NH).

The Solstices and the Equinoxes (when all of Earth get an exact 12 hours of day light) have all to do with the 4 seasons of the Earth, which in turn comes about because of the Earth’s crucial 23.5° axial tilt. That is what causes the two different hemispheres to jut out at the Sun at different angles as the Earth completes its yearly orbit around the Sun. At the Winter Solstice the Northern Hemisphere is further from the Sun, so it takes longer for sunlight to reach it. The following pictures should remind you of what the seasons and the Solstices are all about.

The Earth’s tilt towards the Sun at the Winter Solstice. See how the Northern Hemisphere is tilted back while the Southern is pushed forward (giving them Summer).

Earth’s 4 season per the Northern Hemisphere. The Winter Solstice, when the Northern Hemisphere is furthest from the Sun is at the far right.

So, join me in rejoicing. The shortest day is here. Summer is on the way.

P.S., That the stupid Mayan doomsday fell on the Solstice is not a coincidence.

So here is the prank call to the hospital, and it cracks me up that a British hospital, in London no less, would actually think that the Queen will make a call:
